Hey Grady! I mostly know you from your engineering-related videos, so I thought I should take a moment to congratulate you on one of the hardest tone-shifts I've seen on KZbin! You went from literally wordless crafting videos to extremely in-depth explanations on engineering principles without missing a beat! Well done, and I look forward to learning from you in the future!

Very nice work. Have long been a fan of mortar and pestles. I have a section of SpectraPly I had bought years ago to make some grips on a hand gun, but never used. this video opened up some new prospective uses for it. Thanks for sharing

Spectraply is one of those products I've never really considered working with and then I see a project like this, where it's used perfectly. Now I have to go buy some spectraply. Great looking project.

Grady, that was great. Very pretty and useful as well. I use traditional turning tools but recognize that easy wood tools are growing in popularity and are just as valid as steel. Different skill set for sure but as another said, the outcome is the same. Can't honestly be critical of that. When I saw the salt, I knew immediately what it was its purpose was. Very clever. I made rolling pins with Celtic knots in them for Christmas. Keeping the beveled inserts in place during glue up was a real headache. Finally made a jig to hold them in place. Think I'll try the salt next time. Keep up the good work and well done videos.

rubbing saw dust on your glue joints when they're drying cleans up the excess glue and fills any gaps rather than using shop towels or rags. i find its easier to clean up that way.

I'm way late to this party, but wanted to say a couple of things. 1. This looks great. Beautiful work! 2. You could avoid the awkward diagonal glue up by gluing the pieces first, then (once dry) rotating the entire piece and cutting your desired angle on the bandsaw.

Nice tools and work, but please go easy on the glue! it needs so much less to join two surfaces ,just imagine the thickness when pressed. All that goes out is just excess. All you need is applying a very thin layer with a brush. Keep on the good work !

I read down a ways but didn't see the answer. What is the multi colored layers you are using? first glance thought is was phenolic but on the oiling the Koolness came together life. Personally haven't done any real wood turning since high school but at that time I'd glue the most oposit small pcs of hardwood to turn and give teachers groooovey wild colored gifts as bribes. I might not have graduated without them.

@troutbum617 жыл бұрын
Just ran across this video. It's been two years since you asked so hopefully you received an answer from somewhere by now, but in case you haven't, here it is. A light amount of salt can be added into the glue to prevent the pieces that are being laminated (glued) from slipping around as much. The salt quickly breaks down from the water in the glue, and the pressure from the clamping with no adverse affect on the bond. Hope that helps
@paggodiablo017 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I have never seen or heard of that before.
@BruceAUlrich7 жыл бұрын
I actually never knew WHY it worked, breaking down from the water in the glue. Interesting. I've never seen such large granules being used before. This looked a good more coarse than table salt, which is what I typically see being used.

I wouldn't be so harsh on him, there are some people who can't even use carbide tools! Even though I can't argue that traditional gouges are much harder to learn, but in my opinion seeing the shavings fly from the flute of a 3/4 inch bowl gouge off a 12 wet maple bowl makes it all worth it!
