Unsellables

3 жыл бұрын

The 14 members (and three generations) of this family need to live apart but are trapped by the current property market in an unsellable Victorian terrace in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Desperate for an offer, they have cut the price and sacked their agent. And now 20-year-old Shumi is marketing the home herself. The structurally impressive, six-bedroom property features two spacious reception rooms, and an ideal location close to the city centre…But with its garbled décor, dodgy DIY, Spartan kitchen, and graffiti-enhanced bedroom, the home is completely unsellable.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. While John helps Shumi decide whether she should really be selling the house herself, Sofie clears out the family and furnishings, revamps the dining room and kitchen, and freshens up the bedrooms with a tasteful colour scheme. Will their hard work pay off?

Same here. On the Northumberland horse farm episode, they put up some cheap "contemporary" scraps in frames instead of upscale horse prints which would have given the place a posh air to viewers. And of course, she did the standard Valentine red bedroom....

You may be confusing 'carpet' and 'rug'. Carpet is installed. Rugs are movable. That carpet is a CARPET. Can't roll it up too easily. That said, it still shouldn't matter what mummy dearest thinks of the carpet, since the plan was to move out anyway.

You don't know what was offered. The investors almost certainly low-balled. During hard times people want a bargain because there are so many to choose from. Six bedrooms for 14 people is not really that cramped. Probably several college students who are seldom home and couples with babies and toddlers sharing their rooms. I think they should have upgraded the kitchen more if they could have afforded to. Also the front yard could have been smartened up with minimal expense and a lot of elbow grease. Not surprisingly no one has time to clean. With school, jobs and babies who has the energy? Such negative comments. Hope they are all doing well today.

It is incomprehensible how anyone would not at least have cleaned the house if they expected anyone to even look at the house. If I had walked into this house and the first thing I saw was the living room I would have immediately walked right out. As for the kitchen why was it so filthy -- doesn't anyone in the household know how to clean? Amazing transformation and the family should be great full that a team was willing to tackle this mess.

You can often see that they only do up a few rooms & the rest of the house is crap. I've seen the back of the bedroom door painted to match the bedroom, but the hall side of the door is scratched & has stickers on it. Or the tacky wood panelling is painted over in one room but when they show that room, you see through the door that the rest of the house is still tacky pine paneling. I have my doubts that a few tarted up rooms convinces buyers that the rest of the tip of a house is worth buying.

Never turn down a decent offer at the beginning. Friends got stuck with an unusual property right into a recession, didn't want to let their parents' place go cheap, and didn't get another buyer capable of financing for TEN years. No one even lived in it, but they paid full property taxes for a decade, which easily added up to any profit. Not to mention deterioration to a vacant place in a weird location.

Judging by the comments, I gather the other rooms are in decent shape. The question I have about the kitchen is what is behind the wall with the cooker and refrigerator let into it? If that space could be stolen back from the other room, there is plenty of space for a very good, very workable galley kitchen. With that area being cabinets to match the other side, with nice new units, it would be a great room in which to cook. The rear reception room is a lovely size with great proportions and Victorian details. Make the most of it. The rooms in the eaves were likely servants' rooms originally. Not a lot can be done except nice painting and decorating. Being Grade 2 Listed, not much could be done to add more windows up there. The front garden needs serious attention, but a day's hard graft could make a world of difference. I can certainly see what could be made of it. It could be stunning if done properly.

If those tiny room were converted into well planned storage with attractive cabinetry and the kitchen modernized it would be more attractive. Few people today have live in servants. I suspect that for some reason these days it is not considered appropriate to teach offspring the fundamentals of living in a house - starting from the age of 10 (70 now) I contributed to cleaning and tidying the house. Both parents worked - dad traditionally dealt with the mowing /' garbage / carpentry / fixing appliances and the car. Mum was in charge of shopping / cooking / cleaning and sewing our clothes. However every day my sister and I were expected to set the table / clear the table and help with the washing up. Every Saturday we had to clean our own bedrooms and a common room (either the bathroom or the lounge) - cleaning the bathroom included all the tiled walls / window sill / mirror - cleaning the lounge included cleaning the window sills (inside and out) / moving furniture to vacuum beneath / ensuring a daddy long leg had not taken up residence in a corner. We had a long haired beloved Collie who I had to brush daily (my dog) but still he shed fur.... so vacuuming of floors and sofa (he was not officially allowed.... but he was sneaky) was essential. Plus we helped mum hang out and bring in washing. This family with 14 people - apart from babies and toddlers - there is no reason why they could not all pitch in and do a chore or two per week.

It is sad, the older generation expects the family to stay home with them, probably the father is the authority figure. They expect to live in modern times , yet they refuse to let go of the past. My family was the same way, but they were astonished when their expectations weren't fulfilled. Can't have it both ways.

The big attic bedroom they briefly showed was really nice (not the tiny one with the skylight) and they said the family was working on the house from the top down, so most of the other spaces were probably decent.

Could make out on her continous giggling that she was bluffing. She had no intention of selling the house. If she was really serious she would have educated herself on the basic s like sqm , gas or electric piping etc They were just looking for someone to do up the house

Agents don't want a good price for you; they want a low price so that it will sell as quickly as possible so they can move on to the next property. The more they sell, the more they make; the price makes little difference to them.

Not a good agent. And they have more than one listing at a time. Any good agent has multiple listings all the time. And if your home sells for more, they make more.
@virginiamoss7045
@virginiamoss7045 3 жыл бұрын
@@meghanscoggins4394 You would think, but more sales make you much more money than higher prices which make little difference. My friend went into residential real estate and this is what she discovered. Of course they have as many listings as they can get at any time; as I noted, it's the number of sales in as little time as possible that gets them the most money, not high prices. Buyers make the sale happen and they are swayed by low prices so that is what both (in America) agents want. (Typically there is a buyer's agent and a seller's agent who split the commission.)

This house had so much potential! Starting with the garden, which was to be cleaned, the dining room became as ugly as before, the cell-room remains depressing and the chosen colors are hideous! If I bought this house, I'd change everything from top to bottom. In the state it was in would not be worth more than 20 0000€.

(edit) *WHAT!!!* They had 2 offers and rejected both!!! Do they truly want to sell or did they just use the show to fix the dump they turned it into????? Tiny Bedroom: I'd replace the small bed with a modern bunk bed twist. Twin bed up top with a desk/game/movie lounge combo underneath. Desk on one side with an office chair on wheels to easily roll away. A sizable computer screen at the desk that can be used for games and movies enjoyed from a cozy chair at opposite end. The blue in the kitchen doesn't get my vote. I'd like to see bright white with soft yellow and hunter green touches.

The curb appeal is zero. The kitchen makeover was not worth the time or the money & the prison cell room is illegal, it has no window for a fire escape. (the skylight does not count) that awful carpet is still there, they needed way more money to get this house market ready.

One of the most frustrating episodes yet! The outside should have been cleaned and spruced up. And for goodness sakes, tear out that ratty carpet… if the mother likes it so much then she should take it with her when she moves. Framed pieces of wallpaper look cheap and one dimensional, a lovely framed print brings more warmth and interest. The blue color in the kitchen was way too bright & the red accents clashed with it…Too bad they couldn’t remove the wall to open up the space. But in all, it WAS a definite improvement from before, but, then, to top it off…the father turns down two great offers! That’s what he did before and regretted it. It seem that he dosen’t learn from past mistakes.

I know this is 3 years ago (they are probably still living in it, even more of them by now!) but why just show and focus on 1 cell of a bedroom in a 6 bedroom house? I can't imagine what the rest are like. I've been inside multigenerational Asian houses before. They are usually like bus stations and about as comforting. The kitchen was awful and when smartened up a bit it still had no storage space. Were are all the mugs and plates and pans and the actual food stores? This will be one heck of a jumbled, cluttered dump behind the scenes.
