After eight years in London, Victoria and Aristero are desperate to move back to Mexico so their two small children can grow up with their extended family…But after a year on the market, countless viewings, and a major price cut, their two-bedroom Victorian terrace in Wimbledon hasn’t garnered a single offer. Despite its prime location, the home’s toy-stuffed living room, peeling paint, well-worn furniture, chaotic conservatory, missing banister, and prison-cell second bedroom are turning buyers off.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They promise to reveal the home’s potential and send the family packing. And while John intervenes to improve communication with the estate agent, Sofie completes the unfinished DIY jobs, and transforms the interiors with fresh furniture and a vibrant new colour scheme. Will their efforts allow the family to say ‘hasta la vista’ to the UK?

@@cheekypiper512 It's not the realtor's job to clean, organize and repair your house. If it looks like a dirty, jacked up pigpen, of course it's going to put off buyers. Would you drive your car through mud puddles and then slap a for sale sign on it and expect buyers to lap it up? Of course not - you'd clean it and try to present it as attractively as possible. Present it like you want someone to buy it. And fix obvious issues like the wall and the lack of a railing on the stairway.

I hope they had a baby gate at the top of the stairs. No way I'd let that stair remain that way with kids in the house (or even without). This is why in the US and many other places building codes require railings and risers on all stairs. Personally, I really love the look of open stairs like that, without rails and risers, but they just aren't safe, especially for little ones. Of course, at least on handrail would be a must for me.

I have moved many times and I am a tidy person but every agent says depersonalize and declutter. By the last three houses I had that done before I called the agent. The first people that looked at my last sell turned in an offer ten thousand over asking - we took it instead of hoping for a bidding war. Do exactly what she does before you list it so agents don’t show other houses first. They want a sale so they favor houses that will sell. These two do a great job.

In the U.S. any modification to a staircase would require new stairs as building codes keep changing. Rise and run seemed very small. Maybe age would grandfather it to remain? Maybe that is why they didn’t close the step part, maybe if they did that it would be a total rehab job because of codes?

Yep, selling a house is well; insulting. I don't care how great your house is there's always room for improvement. In the USA our market is crazy right now. It's a seller's market but with that said; you will likely need to upgrade to sell. My realtor, tough love, showed me many things that I needed to do. I couldn't get the whole list done. But, with her help it not only sold; it actually had two bidders/offers at the same time; which meant I got more than the asking price! I couldn't believe it because it wasn't the best property to begin with and I knew that.

Buyers shouldn't have to step through acreage of toys and blankies and all that crap that new parents find so adorable. Get over yourselves, the kids won't even remember this. the street view is drab and cluttered and doesn't match the standard of the adjoining residences. #1 the 4 bins and buckets needed to be stored out of sight at the back. #2 the dull black doormat needs to be swapped for a fresh, coloured one in say terracotta; #3 the raggedy hedge needs a sharp tidyup trim; #4 the dull hanging plant needs to be replaced with a cascading bright red flowering plant, maybe a geranium. these are all cheap and easy fixes. Finally the all-white facade looks boring and basic, the wall needs to be painted a colour that contrasts with the white window frames - a neutral e.g. beige (like other houses in the terrace) would be a no-brainer.

Sandra WestleyUK, we still leave the property to be sold by the agent, our house is on the market at the moment and had 8 viewings at the weekend and we just left the agent to show them round. And even if they were, they'd have to pack it up ready to go anyway. What strikes me is Mexicans wanting to return to live their lives in Mexico to raise their children when parents in Mexico are sending their children alone over the southern border with Mexico into the US to give them a better life. I think they are just not making it in Wimbleton where they don't fit in and can't afford it. Still, a lovely couple and they can take care of their parents in Mexico; real decent of them.

I am wondering if they could do the banister, handrail without a permit and having to redo the entire thing if they had to close the steps would have required a permit and a lot more demolition. Thought it was odd stairs not painted. But that is a job for owners not sellers. The next people may not have small kids. It just needs to be reasonable safe for most people. Imagine a homeowner hurt their foot, got home and then had to go upstairs. They need something to hold onto.

Mess, dirt and holes are not specific to nationality. A lot of people think this kind condition is normal and they are comfortable with it. I had Australian tenants in a brand new apartment, and they did more damage then I would have made in 20 plus years or ever. Holes in walls , food spilled and left on walls etc.... They considered this kind of condition normal wear and tear.

@virginiamoss7045
@virginiamoss7045 3 жыл бұрын
@@lesliecas2695 Thank you. So, I guess that's like selling contingent on being able to buy another house. I don't think that would go over well in the US. We generally buy a house contingent on the sale of our existing house (and of course, financing); it says so in the sales contract. If we can't sell our house within a certain amount of time, we lose the house we wanted and the backup buyers have a crack at it. We can make a sales contract of our existing house contingent on our ability to find and close on another house, but few would want to wait, making it difficult to sell, and it would rush the hunt for the next house where we would have to wait for the chain to catch up. Chaining seems unworkable and stressful. Moving house is stressful enough.
@Debbie76
@Debbie76 2 жыл бұрын
@@virginiamoss7045 That still sounds like a chain. It's still buying a house where the owners of that one are also buying a new house or if you are selling your property too which is what a chain is. Did they rent a red sofa just to put a white cover over it? 🤣 maybe the red was just cheaper to rent because it’s a harder color then you just put what ever color you want over. Actually kinda smart. 🤔 but also. I love how they talk about the pressure of the home owner being there but then they show the house and stuff an entire camera crew in front of potential buyers. Unless they just get random actors to come in and act interested for those bits.

Good point; personally, I wouldn't want to be bothered with either the homeowner or the camera crew. But I guess some people who would get a kick out of possibly being on TV would agree to being recorded. But then you can't trust them to be honest.
