Today I'm sharing the speed paint and a bit of insight into the process of designing a Magical Girl inspired by the Ghanaian flag. I especially loved being able to go a bit more in depth about her powers and the Adinkra symbols!
In case anyone is curious as to whether or not I'll be making more of these longer-form videos for ALL the countries, I'm honestly not sure yet. I still intend to make short-form reels for them though!

0:48 also, I’ve noticed a lot in older media, characters were “ambiguous brown”. Like English/British characters or French characters or German or Canadian etc etc were allowed, but if they were not white, they were either “brown” or “Japanese?” In a lot of newer shows, non European cultures are being explored, like in Amphibia or Moon Girl etc etc. I love how you create even more representation tho… you need to get a show 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Yes! I remember back when I used to watch anime, the “ambiguous brown” characters would cause so much arguments. It was always “this character isn’t black, they’re Indian” and it stayed that way until the creators decided to come out and clarify, which some never did. I didn’t mention it in the video, but this is such a good point. Of course, including brown-skinned, non-black characters in anime isn’t a problem at all and I love to see it! What bothered me mostly was the vehement insistence I used to see in the anime community that no brown/dark character could ever be black?? It made me feel like black people weren’t welcome in the space and is one of the things that kinda started to turn me away from anime. Nowadays, like you said, there is a lot more clarity about these sorts of things and Japanese shows have gotten so much better at depicting PoC when they choose to do so. I don’t watch anime anymore, but I’ve still seen the progress, which is so encouraging ❤️

I was one of the people who requested your Sierra Leonean magical girl and I’m so glad you’ve done it! As a Sierra Leonean it warmed my heart to see more representation considering I’ve gotten many many comments of people saying they didn’t know it was real or thought it was the gay flag….yeah 🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱🇸🇱

I totally feel you there, the amount of ignorance surrounding Africa / African countries really grinds the gears. I try not to be too mad because before I started this project, I didn’t know much either which is sad to say, but hopefully I’ll be able to spread a little more awareness through this. Also its kinda wild that someone would think the flag of Sierra Leone in the LGBT flag because they look NOTHING alike, that is so crazy lmao
