This was smart, kind of doing the no dig thing and planting on top, can't wait for an update to see how it worked out! I was lazy and just tried to clear my ground first -- it actually worked in the hottest/poorest soil conditions, but in all of the areas that were half way habitable w/ decent organic matter I got WAY more weed than wildflower germination. It's been kind of cool learning what everything looks like from tiny baby plants? But way too much work and/or disappointment spending a lot of money on fancy native seeds and getting only a few to germinate, then having to do a buttload of weeding too! The weed seed bank is just like eternal it seems. Now that I've got more of a feel for actually which native species will come up by just tossing them out in fall (and knowing what they look like) I only sow those directly and the others I start myself indoors. Saves me a lot of money on seeds. I don't know what your slug situation is either, that is another reason I have better luck w/ plant starts or bulbs.

Another great video Paul one of my favorite gardeners on here! Cant wait to see how they all fill in and flower through the spring and summer. Love the focus on pollinators and wildlife, would be cool to see a video as time goes on highlighting all the species the garden has attracted over the seaon, keep killing it dude!

You should now, some plants in those mixes may take two years to bloom from seed. An inexperienced gardener may pull em out for weeds... and butterfly weed grows in ditches on backroads, and you can dig em for FREE

Would love to know what nurseries carry Texas natives! I live about an hour north of Houston and the garden centers near me never carry enough natives.

i hope you read my comment. many years ago i used to buy "top soil" from lowes or home depot. that stopped really quick when i realized its NOT ACTUALLY top soil, its mainly SAND !!! trust me, in the long run you will much b etter off using a good garden soil and compost. its going to cost more, but you wont have to replace your plants as often because flowers dont grow in sand.

Good looking out but the flowers I’m planting are all native species which grow in very poor soil conditions along roadsides and disturbed areas. I think the top soil mixed with organic matter of the broken down leaves will work fine. It has before!

Looks so much better than those lawns. Everyone who has a garden should plant and/or preserve natives and get rid of non native grass. We'd save billions of gallons of water a day, save on fertiliser, save on pesticides. And insects and bees would greatly benefit too. Image if everyone got rid of their lawn and did that... Would make a giant difference.

I thought you tried that already and didn't like "the weeds" growing?? You will find that it's difficult to grown ANYTHING under oaks!! Purchase "epididymis plants." They grow good under oaks. 😊

I do mulch my beds, with fallen leaves. I’m not about to buy store dyed wood to just have leaves fall on it anyways. That one area is a wild flower meadow. I’m letting it be wild and covered with flowers for pollinators and reptiles. My backyard is more wild and natural lookin.
