WARNING: Tasting chemicals that you make is almost always a bad idea. Even though I've taken several steps to make it as safe as possible, I'm still doing it at my own risk.
For this video, I'll be using the urea that I got in my last video, to make Dulcin. Dulcin was the second artificial sweetener to be discovered, but it's now banned due to health issues. My goal for this video is to make it using only easily sourced materials, and then to taste it at the end.

I guess he knew exactly what was in there though, because it seemed to be easily purified out!

Sides reactions happen all the time in synthesis, it's only by subsequent purification steps that purity is improved - usually at the expense of yield. However, he really should have extracted the acetaminophen out of the pills/fillers before carrying out the reaction.
@pietrotettamanti7239
@pietrotettamanti7239 5 жыл бұрын
@@mortlet5180 I think that it was due to the carbonyl. Sometimes in strongly alkaline conditions carbonyls with alpha hydrogens give some sort of polymerization reaction, and when this happens the polymer is always that kind of red crap. I don't think that it was due to the additive of the pills, most of the times the fillers and the binders are pretty inert stuff, like silica or some sort of magnesium salt. I could be wrong though.
@Philip_J_Hill
@Philip_J_Hill 5 жыл бұрын
@@mortlet5180 Im sure he looked into it. You can find everything in any pill you want very easily, usually on the box itself. But this is usually for OTC stuff, prescription stuff is usually in the orange or blue bottles with the printed info labels. Depends how big the scrip is though, my buddies dad gets a 3 month bottle of oxycodone for his scoliosis and the bottle looks more like an advil bottle than a prescription bottle, and it has all the ingredients and binders listed. You can also find the info on their website for all the pills a certain brand makes. This goes for basically any and ALL brands of pills in circulation.

Edit out and change the misused big terms king and aure (too similar to aura / aureate) and, such terms cannot be misused in names, so all unsuitable names must be changed! And the misused food / drink terms sweetener and tea must be edited out - it’s beyond ofsv to food / drink!

that makes sense. Besides, to match the sweetness of 20-40 grams of Dulcin, you'd need 500-1000g (.5-1kg) of sugar, or about 5 cups. I highly doubt that would be much healthier either.

I know I'm crazy late here, but if you made a gallon of sweet tea, Southern style the first pitcher would have 5 regular tea bags, and 2 cups (which is roughly 250 grams) of regular sugar. This would make it much easier for you to do the Dulcin, as it would be just 1 gram.

That activated carbon filtration, surprisingly, worked REALLY well! The stuff I have to work with resists decoloration by activated carbon REALLY well. I usually still do 3x of stirring the hot solution,with the carbon in it, then filtering through celite and a #4 sinter, then recrystallizing, and finally I run it through a disposable, normal phase, flash chromatography cartridge, just to make it a bit easier on the expensive C-18 RP column...

I'm not sure if this will ever been seen, but I went to cosmetology school, and a common "hack" I was taught involved sweet n low. Into hair dye (permanent dye, the kind you mix with peroxide) if you mix in sweet n low, it actually helped make the hair dye more tolerable for clients, less painful/itchy. I've always wondered if there's actual science behind it? Or if it was more of a placebo effect? Either way I always found it fascinating.
