This movie is one of the best movies in this genre. I was at that time they shot the film, working as a crewmember on a Norwegian ship, and we were in port in Philadelphia, and were asked to participate in a scene with some loading activity as a background. Could not recognise our precense in the movie, so we were probably edited out. But my opinion is that both Poitier and Steiger lifted that story up to a much higher level than the story could. In my opinion a masterpiece every new generation should see.

An epic film. Im white, Republican, raised in the South by a man from New York. Sidney Poitier was a family favorite. An American icon ❤ This film was and still is epic❤

What Mirish said applies today. Nothing has changed substantially today. Police work is being examined more closely when we deal with "White Cops and Black Citizens". And it is a current issue.

Kids of today should watch movies like this as I did back in the 60's. Young minds need some nourishment amongst all the pap they are fed today.

Great Video. Great Film. My Opinion it's the first buddy cop movie. R.I.P. Norman Jewison, a true filmmaker, and an inspiration for generations to come.

When the movie, "In the Heat of the Night," was being filmed in 1966 the Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad (provided the passenger train for the movie) only operated passenger service between Chicago and St Louis. Consequently, a special GM&O train had to be made up and brought south from St Louis for shooting these train scenes which were probably all made in the same day.

This movie, and the television series. Both shows were so powerful. Sad part is even today it's still very relevant. Freedom and racism go unfortunately like hot dogs and buns. Someday maybe we'll mature enough too be what we're supposed be. Freedom for one and all...

The 'best actor' Oscar award should have been shared between Rod Steiger & Sidney Poitier for this movie. They were equally brilliant - & what a great gesture for race relations it would have been (never likely to happen, of course).

What an outstanding film!! I was in high school in the mid to late 1960s but our mostly white Southern school had been integrated since 1954. We had all races in this small town’s schools, so it took me by surprise - all the racial animosity- - as an adult. While I was in college to become a nurse, these three white guys tried to intimidate me about me driving a black student (a friend). I told them it was none of their business and they left me alone after that.

@@slcRN1971 Sidney Poitier was 'lucky' to be around (& chosen) at a time when many great movies tackling the race issue were filmed: Pressure Point, A Patch Of Blue, To Sir, With Love, to name a few. Having said that, he always played his part to perfection.

The reviews of this film get on my nerves, they almost always get the scenes right, they miss the larger picture, the picture being Virgil Tibbs. The reason it works, is because most films dealing with this thorny subject just have pathetically drawn caricatures of the issue (Yes, Trouble In Town, I'm looking at you). Virgil works because he was a flawed human being, clever but as egotistical as the rest of us. That is openly explored in the film, overtly so. It's a road trip, without them dancing together, (the interracial footloose moment), the two protagonists move slightly within their minds, just a bit, both learn something about themselves. That's all you can hope for, really.

Stellar Movie! I watch parts of it over and over. However, this special must have been filmed years ago because in 2023 under the Biden administration everything is judged by TODAY's standards not when the actual film was originally filmed. So, everything that was in the film would run counter to the "Woke" crowd. You couldn't even Make in the Heat of the Night now I'd bet!

@@genemoon9843 LOL! I stand by my statement! Anything the left (and those that live in their mother's basement) deems to be something they don't like will be considered "Hate" speech and censored. So just hold on to your shorts (if you're wearing any) because if Kamala gets in what I said will become censored and Your "f-------" up statement will be just fine!

It's obvious this is an old production. "Woke" has become a meaningless slur. It's like calling someone a "commie". I can't make head nor tail of your comment.

Absolutely, positively not. I was a kid but I remember the race unrest and the Vietnam War. It was a turbulent time in our country. I remember the 1967 Detroit riots and the white flight that came after. This is a very accurate depiction of the times. I’m white, a veteran, ex cop, and retired career firefighter that retired as a Deputy Chief.
