Amazing that in '66 he was able to convince them to play the film with the greenhouse scene uncut everywhere - despite the threat of southern theaters boycotting it. In New York the theaters roared to the scene and people came just for it. They called it "Superspade vs. the Rednecks"

Re-watched this film a few days ago, before I came across the interview above. Holds up brilliantly; Poitier and Steiger deliver one of the best chalk -and-cheese character double-handers ever. Crackles with tension, mixed with a burgeoning, grudging mutual respect.

He was 100% correct in changing that scene to a slap back. It was perfect!

The GOAT. Several times in this flick just his look says a thousand words.

Poitier - Olivier: I honestly find it hard to this day to find any difference between them when they're interviewed in terms of sheer stature. Apart from their accents, of course, and their generations. Both masters of their craft, their art, and of their intellects.
