what a musically astounding piece of hardware the Amiga was.
@nebularain33384 жыл бұрын
Actually the sample based playback system on the Amiga was a bit weak compared to something like the SNES which used a very similar sound architecture. The difference was that the SNES had eight sound channels whereas the Amiga only had four. Furthermore, there was no panning capabilities on the Amiga's channels whatsoever,. Everything was either hard left or hard right with no ability to "centre" anything. What it did have was some amazing composers that made the most of these pretty horrendous limitations, and most TVs back in the day were mono anyway so it passed a lot of people by. Still, just think how much better the music would be if the Amiga had eight pan-capable channels like the SNES.

Nebula Rain you mean the SNES that came out years later? Wow, imagine a system that came out years later having better sound...

Great video! This is probably my all time favorite game. This game really show how fantastic the Amiga could be, and I feel this is one of the games that probably took the Amiga to it's fullest potential.
@DGuidi5 жыл бұрын
actually I think lionheart, agony and jim powers push amiga a little bit forward, but turrican 2 probably it's THE game with best graphics and sound AND fun to play
@amigamagic57545 жыл бұрын
@@DGuidi In Turrican 2 there are many sections where the Blitter chip of the Amiga is pushed really at its max limits. For example, sections where animated waterfalls (at 50fps) cover about the 50% of the screen, or consider the horizontal shoot'em up section, with those incredible parallax effects that normally would require using an hardware dual-playfield mode (and that would have meant being able to use only 8 colors per layer... Very limiting). But in Turrican 2 the parallax effects were entirely made by the Blitter chip (I used the debugger of WinUAE to check this) so it can use 16 colors for the foreground tiles and the animated objects + other 16 colors for the main sprite (+ many color changes by the Copper chip). At 36:12 and 43:22 of this video you can see some incredible examples of parallax made by the Blitter, always at 50fps. Unfortunately the "Blitter" parallax was not used in all the levels, probably because it was too demanding in multi-directional scrolling platform sections (you can see a little example of parallax in a platform section at 45:50). Maybe at 25fps we could have had a big parallax layer in all the platform sections, but Factor 5 (the developers) wanted to get 50fps arcade smoothness and many animated objects on the screen at the same time. I think Turrican 2 is one of the best programmed games of the Amiga and it's also very fun to play (and it has gorgeous music). Another one is Apydia (great music there too).
@yota79064 жыл бұрын
@@amigamagic5754 speaking about programming we absolutely have to mention Elfmania and Shadow Fighter. They play at 50fps a multi parallax and multi directional scrolling. Not to count the parallax scrolling of the floor. Terramarque and Naps Team made an autostanding work to put outstanding graphics, music and animations in just 1MB of RAM. Shadow Fighter is my fav one coz of the playability and the cool loading system but I literally love the backgrounds of Elfmania! I cannot stop thinking how could have been a Street Fighter 2 conversion made with the passion and the skill shown by these guys
@amigamagic57544 жыл бұрын
@@yota7906 Elfmania and Shadow Fighter are very good from a technical point of view. Elfmania has truly beautiful 32-colors backgrounds (IMHO they are pixel art masterpieces), but it's a shame that as a fighting game it is very poor (and that 'cute' look of its characters doesn't help) and I remember it had super-long loading times. Shadow Fighter uses more parallax effects but doesn't look so good (the palette is halved compared to Elfmania), but at least it plays more like a fighting game should. Another cool fighting game on the Amiga OCS is Fighting Spirit. Great programming there and great art style: there is no parallax but it's a full-screen game with big characters and it uses the EHB 64 colors mode! That's very impressive for an OCS game and it looked (and almost played) like a NEO-GEO game! P.S.: unfortunately the Amiga was not a good platform for this type of games... They required many disk swapping and too long loading times... And with just 1 fire button it was not easy to control all the moves.
@yota79064 жыл бұрын
@@amigamagic5754 totally agree, i will never understand what was in mind of Terramarque when they decided those character designs 😅. I'm not agree about the Shadow Fighter backgrounds graphic, they are surely less impressive than Elfmania's ones but i still loved them. Fighting Spirit was impressive but it was looking too "static" for my tastes.

The art is very different form the DOS version. I like both, this art is gritty and dirty, like from a Metroid Game. The in game art from the DOS game looks more like an action themed cartoon.

The art style from the DOS version certainly has more detail and enhanced colour, but the animated backgrounds from later levels are absent. I think I still prefer the Amiga version 🙂

Thanks for the upload. As with most games I played on the Amiga, I never finished them. They all seemed too hard as a kid. I was just playing it now (as a 36 yo) on AmigaForever emulator and got up to 45:41. However the file seems corrupted because the next level wouldn't load (it just flashes mutlicolours beyond the status bar). I thought that was the end of the game. Very disappointed. So I found your video and behold! There are many more levels. I got to watch them and finally see all of T2 in all its glory. Thank you :') It seems the cracked versions I played never had the backstory so I had never seen the intro. And now I got to see the outro. The level with the ship flying in the scrolling section was very hard. The scrolling window moves so fast. Kudos. I found the bosses too easy. I always favoured the laser, too :)

CURSE YOU GOD FOR NOT MAKING TURRICAN 2 RUN NTSC! All i have is the memory of being 12 and playing it back in the day.

Ah man... I close my eyes and just listen to this music, and think, "I wish i could have afforded an Amiga." (I could only afford a used TI99/4A). MAN, back in the day, when you had to set frequencies, waveforms, and envelopes, just to make a tone. But to make music... Wow. Just wow. Should this game be rewritten in GameMaker, with this exact same music? Would the artists from Factor 5 allow it? Hmmm...
