Welcome to polymer clay a simple enough looking medium that can be extremely intimidating if you dont know the basics of how to handle the clay. The key is to just have some fun and dont worry if its not perfect if you dont like your mix move on and use it for something else. Remember we can always use bead filler so theres no waste !

Good on you honey, I'm 60 and I wish you many more years to get clay making. I was told to give up some things because I have arthritis and my fingers were sore, I gave up for two weeks.....I couldn't move my fingers at all, so I started doing what I always did and got my hands back. I realised later, I had been up in Scotland for a couple of weeks visiting my family, so of course I wasn't using my hands much. So now if I go anywhere I make sire I take a couple of soft balls with me to keep my hands going. All the best with your bead making. Hugs xxxAnnxxx

I love the fact your videos are complete instruction. You see the process, and you give a full explanation for everything. You are right about how tough the clay is. I fooled around about 20 minutes with each piece, but made them more pliable by putting a little cooking oil on my hands. I took your idea for the round shape tool and made a bunch of different tools for soda cans- including cutter/slicers.I made 2 long ones and 2 short one. I put a piece of duck tape across the top sharp edge so It won't cut my hand. The aluminum wipes off easily, and I lightly coated hem with some cooking spray on a paper towel. Thanks for the great idea.

Rita Gonera I know how you feel. I couldn’t find mine and my daughter bought me a new one for Christmas. Of course I found the old one and now I have 2. It comes in handy because now I only use one of them for white clay. It tends to get dirty looking if the pasta machine isn’t perfectly clean so it turned out great.

I just want to thank you, for showing me and all others, your technique, creativity and all the time you put into this. I like many are new to this. I have to keep busy and this has so many variety and options to work with, with out hauling out the paints, canvases, water etc.. TYFS! So many great ideas! I use popsicle sticks (Dollar Store) stacked up keep thickness of clay consistent. Glue them together is you need so they can't slip. I put my flattened clay between them and roll over the sticks. It makes every piece the same thickness. Cheap n easy.

I never thought about playing with clay to help my arthritis. Thanks for that idea. I may have to try this after all. I recently discovered how severe my arthritis is when I started wire wrapping jewelry and found it almost impossible to hold tiny beads to thread onto the wire.

As far as wire wrapping and jewelry making... a good stickem tool (with a gummy tip to hold the beads until you put on the stringing material) may help. Or you can use tweezers. When I was 1st diagnosed with arthritis I was devastated because of what I thought I would no longer be able to do. But I fiund ways to do just about what ever I wanted. You can find exercises to help with any arthritic issues. Sirry so long and not really about this woderful video.

I know this video is 2 years old. I have watched it many times and still keep coming back to it. I wanted to comment as I am amazed at the difference between Australia and USA. You buy that package of clay for $15. The same package of clay in Australia is everyday priced at Spotlight for $84 which is equivalent to about $65 USD at today’s exchange rate. Never do they discount 50% and even when they do discount 30 or 40% it rarely applies to craft supplies. I find this incredible and it certainly makes it difficult for a lot of people to craft. Also a lot items available at your dollar tree cost me close to $4, $5 or even up to $10 at our cheap stores. Suffice to say I envy USA crafters. On a more upbeat note however. I love what you do and watch your videos over and over. Thank you for your time and talent. You’re amazing!

I bought 2 pasta machines at savers/value Village for about $4 each, one didn't have a handle but we had an old bent screwdriver laying around that made a perfect handle for it. So keep an eye out at thrift stores, the pasta machine makes a huge difference!

You can also tape 2 chopsticks, skewers, etc., parallel to each other on your work station and roll your clay between them to keep your thickness uniform. Thanks so much for the in depth tutorial!! This helped me so much. Fantastic bead ideas!

Susan, thanks so much for your time and effort that went into making this video. It has so many tips and advice for the beginner and actually answered quite a few questions I had that I couldn't find online! Helps for me: no dedicated oven (I'm paranoid about that too). And I need to switch from sculpey iii to premo. I've made some lovely canes from your other tutorials, but mostly from sculpey iii or a mix of that and premo. You can mix the sculpy3 and premo it will make it stronger , but its really silly they dont explain the differences on the packages

Can aaalways use the sculpey 3 for pracice pieces too. No, they will not be as strong, but if are having difficulty in executing your ideas, it may help to use the "weak" clay just find a way to put it togther. No need to fear mixing of clays, or wasting the"good" stuff. I try to akways keep 2-3 blocks of sculpey 3 just for these types of ideas.

I picked up a 15X15" plain white ceramic tile at Home depot for under 2 bucks. It works perfectly! The only thing I added to it was felt feet since the underside is very rough. That was just to protect my table. Also, an inexpensive alternative to buying the ball tools is make up brushes. I bought a set of small and large ones at my local dollar store for a buck a set. Now I have 14 different ball tools! Just use the bottom end. I painted mine with clear nail polish just as an added measure of security.

ABSOLUTE BEST BEGINNER CLAY VIDEO!!!!! I was gifted a beginner multi pack, much like the one you used about 6 months ago, and it's just sat there, cause Im5 a bookbinder a d book restorer, it don't know what to do with this stuff! I don't have a pasta roller, I didn't know that was like a thing, um except for making pasta. I have everything i need to play with this stuff, try something new and HAVE FUN! I really enjoyed the video. I enjoyed your narration and your easy-going outlook. I've repurposed a scotch tape roll for a cutter, coated a toothpick in epoxy for a poker, took a piece of Romex wire to put holes in the beads and cut a piece of plexiglass to work on and am using a hot glue stick as a roller! I won't ramble on, but my relationship with beads goes back a long time and I'm having a lot of fun making them. Thanks for the video! You have a new subscriber.

You could also use a rubber band on each side of your rolling pin. You can pick different thicknesses. Or wrap cardboard around the rolling pin add tape to hold it. I love that you tell people look around the house. Recycle. Everyone is too quick to buy things when you probably have many items sitting in your home. One thing I don't recall you mentioning. Do you let the needs dry before baking it? Also, can't you put some fabric on the tin can so you don't get a shiny back? Totally amazed at the amount of beads you were able to make.

I love the rubber band idea brilliant! The tape would work too but rubber bands would be easier to remove Tfs. Yes baking on fabric keeps the shiny highlights away. No polymer never needs to dry it also never dries out so you can leave it a month and come back and finish what your doing. It only hardens when you bake it . Happy Claying!

I have used popsicle (or craft) sticks to mark different thicknesses of clay. A single stick is thin, glue 2 together for next thickness, then 3 and so forth. I have sets up to 7 sticks high. Or yeah, fogot to mention, have to make 2 for every thickness you create. Then put one on each side of your work and "just keep on rolling". 😀

I used to have a pasta machine but it broke. So, like you, I did it the hard way. The solution I found for having and even thickness of sheet was popsicle sticks. For a thin layer I'd use one popsicle stick on each side of the sheet of clay and roll it down to that thickness. For a thicker layer I'd use two popsicle sticks glued one on top of the other. Worked like a charm for me. I've made myselt a beautiful beaded curtain with my clay. Love your videos, I always learn something new or am inspired for try something new, thank you again.
