Heyja :-) As requested by one of my fellow subscribers, here's a quick Tutorial on how to create those classic Chords for Dub Techno on the Elektron Analog Four. We use a single Oscillator for that, along with the typical Effects and try to make it sound ... dubbish :-) Enjoy!
If you liked that Tutorial and if it has helped you, dont forget to leave a Like and drop some comments :) And if you dont want to miss on future Tutorials to come, hit that Subscribe Button :-)

Love your tutorials umonox! They really help to dive into the possibilities of the elektron machines

You could also add velocity envelope modulation instead of parameter locking. Soft velocity created a more closed filter and the more velocity the more you open up the filter. You get nice dubby quality with more precision IMO.

Thank you so much! This is just what I wanted . I bought an Analog 4 recently and I am still coming to grips with it! Would you please do a video on making Techno and Trance with an Analog 4 and an Elektron Machinedrum some time? (I have both) I would be ever so grateful!

thanks Steven. Glad i could help you out. I dont have the Machinedrum anymore, sorry. It had to go several years ago already. I made a Trance Track with the A4 and the Rytm couple of months ago, here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gavHqml_mJepo9U Currently i have quite a few things to do with the Digitakt, along with another machine that i got in exchange for yet another machine couple of weeks ago :-) Im moving into more melodic territory again but i dont really have Trance in mind - at least not yet ;-) Stay tuned.

I have: Analog 4, Machinedrum (I thought it was a good buy, maybe I was wrong?), a MicroKorg, Roland SH-01 Gaia and a Casio WX-P1. I want to do Trance and Techno and Japanese music with a Japanese singer (I am planning to take my music making to Tokyo eventually, where there is a good music scene). In the meantime, I am enjoying all your videos. It the Rytm good? I was thinking of getting a Octatrack to complete my Elektron setup.

Can’t you detune the sub & second osc to create chords from one voice?

The vibrato is good for that but you apply very small amount of it. Very nice sound i love dubby chords

Can I ask you something ? If you making chords sound on track 1 can you use rest of 3 tracks or just 1, because you already used 3 voices?
@umonox
@umonox 8 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Sure, you can always ask me some questions! You can use the rest of the tracks as well. If you increase the Reverb's Decay time and make the sound of the actual Notes shorter (by decreasing the Decay of the Envelope) you wont run into note stealing issues for as long as you dont place the Trigs for the other sounds close to the Trigs of the first track where the Chord is playing. This is true for other sounds as well. As long as you make sure that new notes are created just after the Decay/Release-Phase of a Sound using more than one voice you are safe and good to go. However if they overlap, you end up with note stealing artifacts, yeah.

ok ! thanks :) so if I understood you well you can't make for example pad with 3 note chords which is long for all 64 bars and on another track 3 note chords with some other chords sound. That's something I didn't realize yet. I asking because I try to choose synth to live performances. Only 4 voices in the same time, yea it's 4 voices . :) thank you for make me sure about it
@umonox

yep, you cant have a Chord with 3 voices lasting for a whole pattern and at the same time using a Chord on another track with 3 voices. They would overlap, you therefore get note stealing. Thats right, you only have 4 voices ;-) Using shorter Decays for those kind of sounds and giving them "Release" with a long reverb tail is kind of a workaround for that. But if you need real voices at the same time - it doesnt work for more than 4 voices, yeah.

Good video but can't you do all this using only one voice with 2 oscillators pitched apart + sub 5th to make a minor triad and still have the other 3 voices for something else?
@umonox
@umonox 8 жыл бұрын
yep, you could. but i like being flexible with the chords, especially when you want to change the melody in a "not so standard" kind of dub techno track. the fith method with the semi-pitched oscillators has many disadvantages in that case; it sounds good on very few notes only and if you want to play in a real scale (like i did in this example: thats C Minor) its almost impossible to p-lock the fith correctly - so that it fits for an actual melody. this may limit yourself in certain situations. personally i dont see a problem using three voices for the chord + one for the bass and the rest is done on another machine - or several other ones. but yeah, you might be on a budget and wanna get most out of the A4 for good reason. so its good you point this method out. i like to hear your opinion on that; there are many ways to rome - as always :)

Would u be interested in trading some sounds? I can give u some sounds from the access virus if u like? I think this synths sounds would go great with elektron sounds.
@umonox
@umonox 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your offer. but im currently not interested in that. I had a Virus TI2 for quite some time and sold it - because xfer Serum serves for that purpose much better these days and is much cheaper ;) Mostly though, i always try to create the sounds on my own as this gives the tracks more character than using pre made sounds. But anyway, thanks for your offer mate!
