Our church sewing group made similar bookmarks this fall. They found some pretty elastic and it held a pen and pencil (or 2 pens). We attached them to composition notebooks and donated with bookbags to kids in Boston at the beginning of the school year. We also gave them to our shut-ins in their Christmas bags. It's a fun, quick project.

I still have tons of elastic and toggles left from making masks, so I can get started on these bookmarks/pen holders. I was able to make 700 masks and 50 scrub caps during COVID era. I hope we NEVER go through that again, but I know we can adapt if we have to. Thanks for this instruction, Ma Totten.

Great idea. You can use this same process to make a pen roll too. Just a little wider, and attach the elastic on the side. I’m going to make both!

I used your link for the little pieces used to adjust the elastic but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the elastic through the tiny hole at the one end. I tried threading the elastic (the same elastic you used) through with the enclosed bobby pin but could barely get the bobby pin through the tiny hole at the one end. There was no way the elastic was going through. Any tips please?

@@marriott57 I sometimes have to use pliers to pull it through. That’s if the elastic is quite wide.
