Hi again! As I mentioned in my last comment I'm knitting a Christmas stocking which I want to hang from the mantle like the short sock on left. My vision before viewing this video was that the BOR would be on the right side running up the heel to cuff. BUT after watching your video many, many, many times (your video is great, it's me...hard time visualizing) I finally realized that the BOR would be in the BACK of stocking when hanging (or on the inside if worn as a L foot sock)! Thought before I knit the complete stocking I would work a little past the heel placement and take a leap of faith and knit the heel so I could see it visually...so far so good...will let you know how it comes out. Thanks again!

Nicely done! Here's something that I have long been wondering...what is the advantage to this type of heel? Why not do the traditional heel flap and gusset? Inquiring minds!
@_laurapenrose_3 жыл бұрын
Great question! So maintaining colour work throughout the heel and gusset method is really difficult, so it’s usually much easier to do an afterthought heel, you also get a more traditional looking sock which is one of the reasons I like it. You could also do a short row heel or a shadow wrap heel but I like how you can just do all the colour work or patterning without having to stop for the heel! Hope that helps!! X
@sylvialarson15062 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad I came across your video! I'm knitting Christmas stockings and am ready to knit the heel...found your video and want to try THIS particular after thought heel...I've knitted other ATHs, but I like this one! My stocking is worked from cuff to toe in the round. Your video was very clear and informative...with that being said I have a hard visualizing this. If I understand this process correctly whereas my stocking is placed with toe at top, the BOR is on the right and I begin picking up stitches from that point, will the heel be on the right and foot placement on left and BOR on the right when I'm done? I know you address this at beginning of video, but I have a hard time visualizing this. Thank you again for your knowledge and expertise!
@_laurapenrose_2 жыл бұрын
It can be hard to visualise, I struggle with that too, but it should be the same for bottom up in that if your bor is in the right and you start there, it will be your left sock as you will flip it to wear it. If your bor is in the left (so you have knit across half of your sock stitches) then when you flip it it will be your right sock x
@andreamiller62002 жыл бұрын
Lovely video! Two questions: regarding the 2 stitches you leave in place on either side of the row you are unpicking to place the afterthought heel at, what do you do with them? I see you will weave in the ends but where are they next worked up in the afterthought heel construction? And what is the needle you are using for Magic Loop (needle circumference and cord length - those cords look very flexible without being floppy or stiff) - thank you!
@_laurapenrose_2 жыл бұрын
I no longer have those needles so I can’t be 100% sure and don’t know the cable length but they were definitely KnitPro! The stitches left over either side of the cut are attached to the tails you weave in so nothing happens them! Weaving in the ends keeps them in place. X
@andreamiller62002 жыл бұрын

@andreamiller62002 жыл бұрын
@@_laurapenrose_ I bless you with my extra sock mojo overflow because finding your video today really turned the heat up on knitting socks, I cannot wait to do my first stranded pair and the afterthought heel is truly genius. Thank you so much! I have been enjoying 9" circs but since I will be trying out stranded yarn, I may revert to DPNs which are really familiar, though I thought magic loop looked pretty smart! No matter what, I am in it to win it and am keenly motivated to dive in!

This looks so complicated but I am sure it is not once I get started. My question is how do I start from the beginning. What size needles, how many cast on and how long do I make it before I put in the after thought heel and toe. Thanks. Maybe you have another tutorial for all my questions.
