Budget MTG Decks
All magic fun, all cards under a dollar
We here at Budget MTG Decks love playing constructed Magic: the Gathering! Whether it’s EDH / Commander, standard or modern, duel or multiplayer, we can’t get enough of it.
Our vision of MTG is a game which encourages strategic thinking, social interaction and above all…fun! To make this accessible to everyone we decided to lower the two largest barriers which people encounter with this game:
1: Cost of building a Magic deck.
2: Complexity of building a Magic deck.
Our mission at Budget MTG Decks is to provide full deck tech videos describing ready to play EDH / Commander and duel decks. With in depth commentary on each card and overall play style. To make sure the decks are truly budget we have limited the price of all our cards to under a dollar (with exception of the commanders). Now everyone can join the Magic: the Gathering fun!

I think Evergreen abilities and keywords such as Flying, Reach, Trample, First Strike and so on, that most new players would easily get confused by (as 90% of the time they are just a single word with no explanation as to what it means) should be a priority ;) . After that it would be interesting to see explanations of some of the set-specific mechanics.

So how come step 2 & 3 can be executed immediately without the opponent being able to counter the "Tap Intrepid Hero" ability? I have a question concerning the last example: What's the sense of playing "Tap Intrepid Hero", because it is already tapped? If you would do the "Shock" first and after that "Tap Intrepid Hero", it would also not prevent the "Destroy Serra Angel" right?
@BudgetMTGDecks
@BudgetMTGDecks 5 жыл бұрын
The point of the example is to show that the ability of a creature going on the stack does not get affected by the creature dying or staying alive. So it doesn't matter if you first tap the Intrepid Hero and it then get's shocked or the other way around.

Great video. Why didn't you tap your card first in order to tap your opponent, then burn him, saving your angel?
@BudgetMTGDecks

@BudgetMTGDecks
@BudgetMTGDecks 4 жыл бұрын
@@kleraudio We understand the confusion. However if you tap a creature (because of the stack) the creature can respond by tapping itself to use it's ability before being tapped. Then it's ability resolves before being tapped. It's kind of like when you cast a spell and someone can still respond to counter your spell before it resolves.
@uzrdutiutfiztdf3545
@uzrdutiutfiztdf3545 4 жыл бұрын
@@kleraudio i think the easiest explanation is that tapping ur creature is part of the cost. u pay the cost in order to place the spell/ability on the stack. nothing can prevent that. the opponent then can pay a cost to place another thing on the stack that resolves first. in this case tapping our own creature is cost (immediatly), tapping the opponents creature is the effect which comes after stack resolving. so the opponent still can tap their creature and put that ability on the stack on top
@SASUKE199731
@SASUKE199731 7 жыл бұрын
What would happen in the third example if you don't respond with the shock.Will your opponent's creature be tapped "before" he could tap to pay for the cost of it's abbility or will trying to do what I mention above be a usless waste of maná and the cost of tapping the Gideon Lawkeeper (because tapping doesn't use the stack)?So, if I wanted to use Gideon's Lawkeeper abbility to tap the opponent's creature BEFORE he can use its abbility I would literally have to use Gideon's Lawkeeper abbility first?

Thanks for the video. Wanted to ask to see if I understood the last example correctly. Using an example from a real game with a friend. He had a sauroform hybrid, 2/2 that can adapt into a 6/6. I was thinking about letting him spend adapt mana before I shocked it. Based on your video I understand it like this: He adapts, I shock. It resolves in reverse order so shock hits first killing the sauroform, the sauroform ability still goes off since the "fire and forget rule". However the adapt now has no target. Thus the sauroform doesn't survive. A different scenario I guess would be if I shock first and he then replies with adapt. Then adapt goes off first, the sauroform is alive so becomes a 6/6, then my shock is resolved making it a 6/4. Would be fantastic if you have time to reply and confirm or correct. Getting back into the game after not having played since back in the 90:s as a kid. We never had a concept of a stack. So for example in a battle between two prodigal sorcerers ping ability the one who tapped to ping last survived. With the stack rules both sorcerers would have been destroyed obviously.

Hi, hi still I have a lot of confusion with the stack. Can you explain the outcome if your first example continued by you playing your own CANCEL after his Cancel ? Does your cancel cause their cancel to fizzle, or would your cancel be a complete waste as everything in the stack plays out. (It seems both cancels would still do their thing [yours wasted] because according to your second example where the Serra angel still dies as everything played out in the stack, even when intrepid hero was killed off before it can use its own ability that is still stacked.

Stuff on the stack plays out regardless of permanents being alive or dead, BUT stuff on the stack can still be countered. So if you play a spell and they cancel it and then you cancel their cancel the result is that your cancel goes first, fizzling their cancel and now your first spell can resolve no problem. Hope that clears it up!

Ok that part is great then, thanks. But activated abilities cannot be cancelled then? Such as your second example about 'fire and forget' Maybe its the wording here that just doesn't seem to agree with what actually plays-out. It would seem more like 'fire and always remember' As a creatures ability is still going to trigger even after he is killed during the stackplayout. :S

There are cards which can counter an ability but they are so rare you can mostly assume they can't be countered. But yeah, always remember the ability because it will resolve.

You cannot. If you want to interact with something on the stack you'll need a counter spell.

I just found this tutorial but I am not getting the "..tapping the intrepid hero to pay for its ability to destroy the angel does not use the stack.." but on the left side you have a clear view of the stack where "destroy Serra Angel" is clearly on the stack. (tap abilities use the stack) The Intrepid Hero tap ability is clearly on the stack because the Angel will die, even though it was countered by tapping Gideon and Shocked .. "In our final example we're gonna see how abilities work with the stack...spoiler alert, it's exactly the same as with the spells" I don't see how it is the same when you are talking about how some abilities use the stack and some abilities do not use the stack. Not even talking about the Fire and Forget rule which completely screws the stack order. I think I understand that I still don't fully understand the tap ability stack :)

All abilities and spells use the stack. The only thing which does not use the stack is playing lands and turning over morph or Manifest cards.

@@BudgetMTGDecks I was wondering how mana-triggered abilities (example: icy manipulator) work on the stack. Here on mtg.fandom (mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Stack) they say non-mana triggers or abilities use the stack, does that mean icy manipulator doesn't use the stack? Can I tap an attacking creature or tap an activated abilitie?

My question is why would you not want to play your card instantly?
@BudgetMTGDecks
@BudgetMTGDecks 5 жыл бұрын
That depends on the situation. For example before going to combat you may want to have mana open to use combat tricks then after combat if you didn't use it you can cast a creature card in your second main phase.

*stack is a muddled mechanic...in my area we play stackless. Its way more challenging and moves the game along! However learn stack if you wish to play competitively. Casual play should be stackless*
