This project is a great one to do on a snowy day at home, or with a class full of students! In this video, I'll walk through how to paint your very own wood slice ornament using acrylic paint. Its a great project for students of all ages and there are so many different ways to make it your own!
Note: If you opt to do a different landscape design than the one I've shown here, especially if it includes mountains, I recommend sketching it lightly with pencil first so you know where the paint should stop. Need ideas for your landscape design? Click below to download a free example sheet to help inspire you:

I'm so glad to see another lefty doing videos! I love that you're calm & you actually explain things without the HUGE showmanship that all the youtubers try to have because it's so hard to follow. You're exact & I love pieces! Can't wait to try! Love ya, Fellow South Paw!

Love the way you do these & did one in water color! Do you gesso the wood as when paint w acrylics on wood without it (wood sucks in the paint)? Very beautiful & have two slices & want to try it!

Hey! This looks stunning! Would you be kind enough to tell me whether priming the wood is necessary or not? I primed the wood and my paint ended up cracking in places 😭 how do I ensure there's no cracking on the finished product?

I bought some wood slices varnished the edges and once the wood was painted and they all keep cracking I thought it was the heat in my conservatory how can you stop them cracking ? Thanks

Any recommendations for sealing something like this?
@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'd recommend varnish for sealing. I typically use a matte spray sealant, but you could also do glossy depending on the finished look you're going for. You can also get the varnish that you apply with a paintbrush, but I prefer the spray since it gets a super clean finish without risk of any brush strokes

Hey, I tried this out with Sharpie and pigma micron pens for the trees/mountains and both went streaky :( do you recommend using something on the wood first to get clean black lines? Thanks!
@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 3 жыл бұрын
oh no!! Do you know the type of wood you used? I've found that the wood type and how porous it is can definitely have an effect on the amount that it absorbs/bleeds

Where did you purchase the wood slices? I called all my local craft stores and nobody has them in stock! I love the shape and size of the ones you had and would love to know where you got them!

I got mine at Joannes! They called them wood rounds there
@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 3 жыл бұрын
Local craft stores usually have them, but some may be out of stock since I know this is a super popular project with teachers in the wintertime! I buy mine in bulk from a company called Walnut Hollow (which is the brand that Michaels and JoAnns both carry), but there are also some great options on Amazon too if your local stores are sold out. This link has my supplies list for this project on Amazon, the wood slices included here are Pine which also work well! www.amazon.com/shop/jenaranyi?listId=24W1RLFVVSPZZ

I noticed you did not use gesso. Do you ever use it?
@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 3 жыл бұрын
I do sometimes! It just depends on the design I'm creating. For these, I've found that gesso doesn't tend to make much of a difference so I just paint straight on the wood, but with more complex designs I'll use gesso :)

When I decided I wanted to learn to paint I grabbed an acrylic paint box. Then when I went looking for tutorials I noticed everyone is using the tubes of which I knew nothing about so haven't done any painting yet. I have some wood rounds to paint on. How does that work with pan paints....just wet and go or....? Thanks. Your are very nice and also informative. Very late to the party.....sigh

Can we use varnish on top? Would Varnish on the black marker smudge?
@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 3 жыл бұрын
Sure, you could use a sealant over this once its dry! Sharpies are waterproof though, and acrylic won't budge so you shouldn't have any issues with smudging with or without a top coat. In instances where I use a sealant, I find the spray kinds are the easiest to work with!

Isn't there any need to apply a primer before painting on the wooden slices?
@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely can (though its not necessarily required). Applying a coat of gesso will give you a smoother surface to work on. In this case, I just paint straight onto the wood with the acrylics because I haven't found that I needed it (and also means one less supply thats needed), but especially if you have wood that you cut yourself, priming it with gesso may help give you a smoother surface to paint on.

@JenAranyi
@JenAranyi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can typically find wood rounds like this in your local art supply store (Michaels and Joanns both carry them) or if you prefer to shop online, Amazon has some good options too! This supplies list includes all of the materials you need for this project, they aren't all the exact same items I used, but they are all similar and work just as well! www.amazon.com/shop/jenaranyi?listId=24W1RLFVVSPZZ

@JenAranyi

You can use any size you want! Typically with ornaments I'll stick to anywhere between 1.5 to 4 inches. These I believe are about 3 inches.
