Just after I bought the Honda CB1000R Neo Sport Cafe, a little over 2 years ago, British motorcycle chain oiler manufacturer TUTORO asked if I'd be interested in trying out their simple yet effective chain oiling system on my new steed.
Naturally I agreed! You can watch the installation video here: • TUTORO Automatic Chain...
In this review video, I'll talk about my experience with the Tutoro over the last 20,000km and what I thought was good, as well as what i thought was bad.

Put this on my Ninja 1000sx, 2 years ago. Works perfect, still original chain with now 32.000 km on it. Adjusted the chain only once. Perfect kit, shame on the brexit to get it for a good price in NL.

Nice review. I chose the Cobrra Nemo 2 because you can use any oil, not dependent on viscosity, air temperature etc. You can even use cooking oil if nothing else is at hand... It's also a non electric, very simple and reliable system.

Nick's a sound bloke and makes these things around the corner from where I live over at Lydney Harbour,. I've had my unit for the last 10 years, moving it from various bikes when I chop and change them. Utterly reliable. Apart from when you put snowfoam over the reservoir cap over a long period of time, causing it to swell. Took it over to Nick where he spun it on a lathe to bring it back to its original tolerances.

Couldn't agree more. Used the same unit since 2008/9 and its moved from bike to bike. Initially I had the dual feed nozzle, but when off the beaten track the shaking caused the sprocket teeth to catch and pull it off. No such problems with the single feed which is much easier to locate securely, and I've never had an issue with it. Generally get about 25000 miles from a chain and sprocket set, so instantly get your money back. Safe, happy travels 👍

Well done AMC, I had to order my one from Europe I think, but I purchased it from your initial advice and love it! Just quietly gets on with its job! If you get the flow rate wrong, you can have funny/surprising cornering experiences, so best to be less and careful than more and generous. I have mine on about 3/4Turn out. I was 1.5T out and the bottle emptied itself in 100kms - an hour's drive over a 2000ft hill with great corners... and it spewed from the chain onto the outside of the tyre!! Lesson learned.

I have a shaft which doesn't require lubing but has the occasional polish 😁. My other bike is chain drive and has a PD oiler on it, It is wired in to a switched live but the advantage of this is it's easy to set the flow rate so fling is less of an issue. I like the look and simplicity of this oiler though and would consider one if I was looking. The important thing with chains, in my humble opinion, regardless of how you oil it is to regularly clean it and put fresh oil on rather than let the grinding paste of grit and oil build up.
@AndyManCam

I think i need one of these for Bessie (my old CBR600 F - the winter hack). I only did her chain last year and she's about to have the full sprockets/chain makeover......Admittedly, everything but the chain has 98000 km........ Talking of oil on the bike - this is no bad thing, provided it does not involve tyres or brakes. Oil anywhere else is a damn good idea. Especially in winter. WD 40 for the electrics, 3in1 for anything else. It's nice having a pristine bike. Oil attracts crud. That's why every bike I've owned has had electrical issues (except Bessie - I gor her young) because previous owners did not bomb it with oil/WD40 at strateigic points. They think it's better when everything is nice and clean and washed. Which removes the protective coat of oil. It's better to have a bike that won't rust. Wash the crud off and bomb it. And it sure as hell is better to bomb the connectors with WD40 on a regular basis. Just sayin !

I pondered on of these a long time ago as cheaper than a Scott oiler but the saving isn't that huge and you get all the down sides. I've had a Scott eSystem and found the display overkill and of course it's more wires to run. I now use their xSystem and its perfect. Easy install and easy control.

I had the previous one on my FZS600 and the same feelings! Too much or to little and i continually forgot to switch it off or even turn it on!! This one is worlds apart and it’s almost fit and forget. It sounds a bit hippy, but don’t forget that gear oil is hideously poisonous and polluting and it’s really only intended for closed systems. Maybe I missed it, but all road dust and whatnot is being stock to the chain and if you don't clean it, the dirt will keep accurate on the chain. And if you need to clean it, it defeats the purpose. Where am I wrong?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 2 жыл бұрын
The oil is thinner than chain wax or grease, so it naturally flings off of the chain. As it does this, it takes the dust and dirt with it. So I’ve had to clean the chain far less with an oiler than without.

I thought these were great when I first installed mine in June this year... But I've turned mine off and will only use it if I run out of spray-on dry lube on long tours, like a back-up. No matter which oil I used the fling was awful. Even on the minutest of flow settings the fling goes everywhere but it's so fine you don't see it. The annoying thing for me was the fling on my top case. Every time I lifted it off and carried it, it was transferring fling onto my hands and clothes. It flinged all over my rear wheel and back of my indicators, rear sub frame. Very frustrating. I even tried chainsaw oil as its meant to more grabby and less flingy. The annoyance this thing caused me outweighs the convenience of having one, but with most things your mileage may vary...
@AndyManCam

There is no need of constant chain lubrication. Lube just protects chain from rust if bike sitting in wet garage. The actual lube is put behind the seals at the factory.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 2 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly disagree as the grease in the chain can’t lubricate the surface between the rollers and the sprockets. Also the chain being moist helps to cool the chain a little and prevent the o-rings being damaged by heat. The chain on my Honda also made a horrible racket if it was dry and immediately went quiet when i put oil on it! Also the constant oiling means that the oil actually takes dirt and grime with it when it flings off and means less cleaning.

I think you misunderstood. The grease installed behind the o/x-rings by the factory is necessary to lubricate the rollers and their internal mating surfaces. As Andy has said the Lube we use on the outside helps to create a barrier to prevent crud entering past the o/x-rings, lubricate the mating surface between the rollers and the sprocket and as you said to prevent surface corrosion. Basically, there is never a situation where more lube is bad 😉 ....as long as it's the right sort of lube.

I’ve had mine for 10 years on several bikes and the only issues have been human error. All I’ve had to do is buy replacement tubing and the odd nozzle

Same here! Didn’t trim the nozzles enough when i fitted a Scottoiler to the Honda for Norway. The nozzles melted shut and i first noticed when the chain ran dry 🤦🏻‍♂️

@@AndyManCam I have the Honda, interesting how you rate oiler and setup. The scottoiler I find needs fine adjustment to get the oil coming out a steady rate.

I did struggle a little to get a setting that seemed right in Norway, but i also had self caused issues with the dual injector nozzle that didn’t help. Lessons learned to take on to the KTM!

As far as I’m concerned this is a different way to achieve the same end. My chains last way longer than they ever have with ‚normal‘ care. I know that means i wasn’t doing it right, but I’ll take less faffing with the chain every day!

@@grenphelps7455 sure, and i do. About once or twice a season or after a particularly soggy ride. Otherwise, the lack of sticky chainwax means none of the goop sticks the chain.

Nice review Andy. So simple shock based oiling rather yacc reliance upon a vacuum draft like the scottoiler uses. Didn't you have the former in your fz1? It'll be interesting to see a long range comparison after a big pan Europe road trip I think.

I did indeed have the vacuum scottoiler on the Yam. I’ve already been to the Alps and back as well as several long weekends across Germany. Performed admirably and only ever needed topping up on the really long trips.
