I've done both figure skating and ballet. Skating was more expensive for me. The coaching (major financial ouch), ice time, and even competitions were more costly. Not to mention that we all did dance classes as well for off-ice training. Pointe shoes did cost more than skates overall because you go through so many, but in my experience that didn't counterbalance the other expenses. Especially since custom skates and good blades are incredibly expensive too. Loved the video! It was a fun one.
@Feelicitasy3 жыл бұрын
absolutely, same for me. I started ballet at 5and took up skating at 7; with ballet becoming more and more a supplementary thing to aid my skating. Figure skating is ridiculously expensive if you do it competitive. Though I never really took on pointe, so the shoe-cost was never really a thing.

thank you for replying. it's good to know the comparison.

I did ballet for 6 months before moving to figure skating because as a little kid i found ballet too boring. I did skating for 3 years then added artistic gymnastics for my off ice thing. Eventually a knee injury in my 4th grade put a stop to all competitive sports.

We look homeless, but we get on stage beautifully. Urban Outfitters is the worst in my opinion, if you can buy jeans from any box store and fray it with a cheese grater you do not need to spend $70 dollars on brand new pants that are already holey. Buy a micro plane or a cheese grater, scissors, a rock, and have a craft day, it will be fun. Or maybe this is me being an old lady curmudgeon who can't fathom spending new kind of money on old looking clothes.

@paigeinthepinklife86463 жыл бұрын
My mom was an ice skater and she said figure skating is way more expensive. The ice skates don’t break down as fast as point shoes but costumes can be hundreds thousands of dollars. Then you have Ice time coaches fees competition fees travel fees off ice training which is usually ballet jazz and strength training. I’m a ballet dancer and my mom was a figure skater so she knows both worlds 🩰⛸

Since You asked: Picture it, 1973, Ohio. I had just started my ballet training, and on the weekends in the winter my mom would take me and my sister ice skating at an arena about 45 minutes from home. I would try to do some of what I learned in class on the ice, twirl around, etc. I must have caught the eye of somebody because someone approached my mom and told her she thought I was really talented, and they wanted to put me into their Olympic training program they had at the rink. "How much", she asked. &15,000.00 per year, Not including skates! So, quicker than you can say Dorothy Hamill, ballet became my career, due in large part to the scholarships that were available, and dance was cheap enough where the only real commitments were time, (until I trained in NY that is, but even that cost less than a quarter of what it took to become a pro figure skater). I don't know what the costs are now, but I doubt it's gotten any cheaper, although young skaters now have corporate sponsorships available. Happy Holidays!

Thank you so much for these vlogs... I know it must be so hard to fit in vlogging to your schedule: it’s much appreciated. I did ballet into my twenties but couldn’t go pro due to a very tight right hip joint and lower back ( heartbreaking) but your videos have inspired me to put ballet barre back into my fitness routine and I’m loving it! I love your honesty and willingness to portray the ballet life and your own life as it really is and also that you teach and encourage others. I have a question: it strikes me that it must be hard to go into Nutcracker “cold”as Sugar Plum without being in the first act, so what’s behind your elegant portrayal of her? Who do you think she really is, and how did you prepare to “be” Sugar Plum on stage? Have a great Christmas ! 🙏🏻💖🎄

My old muscle memory from ballet years past is coming back! Keep blessing us with you being you. It helps so much to see dancers being normal. And you and Sean (sorry about spelling if I spelled his name wrong) are great together. Do some vlogs together. Super funny and fun! And yes…I would dance after pizza too! Much love and MERDE’!

Thank you for being such an inspiration and for making sure that there is always joy and passion in your dancing! I have hashi’s as well that stopped me dancing for a long time and I was very depressed. While I have no intentions of being a professional dancer and really just enjoy going to classes, finding your videos was a huge factor in inspiring me to go back to taking classes. Ballet is my medicine and my happy place so thank you so very much for being an inspiration!!!

I LOVE the Karinska style bodice on your gold tutu! Back in the day i had a few protest type items of clothing worth noting. Mind you this was in the 80's and 90's. First an Elvis Costello 1984 tour pink t-shirt with Goodbye Cruel World slogan, then ridiculous fuchsia tank unitard that looked great with the t-shirt. Then a back t-shirt from a Cowboy Junkies tour with the slogan Cheap is How I Feel! LOL It looked great with everything. MErde.

What are ways the cost of ballet could be reduced? Costumes and shoes are often or always hand made. Practice clothes don't have to be expensive. Teachers could perhaps charge less, but it depends on so many other factors. Just curious, why is ballet spendy and how to change that?
