I was TV licence free for over 3 years and still am now (Never watch live TV mainly just prime or netflix). Recently with the last 6/7 months while i was at work my wife had a TV licence goon turn up to our property and demanded she let him in to check for an Ariel bla bla to the point he was trying to make out the piece of paper he had on his clip board was a warrant for entry but refused to show her it when asked. when she refused him entry because our son then at the time who was only a few months old was asleep in the living room the man in question then done the old baliff boot in the door way to prevent my wife from closing the door on him. After about another 10 - 15 minutes of him still demanding to be let in, luckily my sister who was Kent police at the time popped by to visit her nephew saw what was going on flashed her warrant card at the guy and he shot off like a rat out a drain pipe. So whatever you do people dont let these scum bags into your property.

If this gets picked up it would be nice to see it addressed: What legal obligation does a person have to engage with or notify TVLicensing (Capita) of their exemption from needing a TV licence? For additional context, I find it interesting that a retailer is allowed to share my name and address with TVL when I purchase a TV (used to work in Currys, saw it happen all the time). When I moved into my new build property to which no TV equipment has ever been ordered, first bit of post I got was from TVL. Presumably TVL gets some notification from the builder at the point the aerial is installed or they crawl land registry for new addresses. I went through their online portal as 'the legal occupier' and they give you a 2 year grace period, then the letters start again, cycling through 'investigation opened', 'visit authorised ', 'will you be in' and possibly some variation on 'final notice'. I've never been visited and I've never hooked my TV up to the aerial point. I just can't be bothered reporting to a private company what I am doing within my own home when I'm aware that it's within the confines of legislation I'm capable of reading and haven't seen an obligation of owners to routinely report their exemption from the need to buy a licence.

I have been license free for over a decade now. Truth is that it is very difficult for TVL to secure evidence that a person is watching / recording live TV illegally. You're under no obligation to engage with them in any way, and you can write to TVL and remove their implied rights of access that should prevent any visits. Simply don't answer the door if they visit, do not answer any of their questions, do not make any statements and do not sign anything. They have no legal powers of entry without a search warrant but they'll often threaten this especially if they think that you are home alone. Treat them as door-to-door salesmen as that's all they are, looking for either their commission or to try and trick the homeowner/tenant in to admitting something verbally or by signing something. They'll use intimidation, threats, coercion to get what they want so it's best to avoid any contact with them. If you do end up having to deal with them, filming them quickly changes their tune. If they think no one is recording that's when they'll use all of their methods against you.

100% and im a solicitor here in Scotland and its what everyone here does. Theyre not allowed to look in the property specifically the living quarters here once theyve been told to leave. You need to tell them to leave indefinately here or they come back after 3yr, they are on a 3yr reset and they only stop that when you make it clear they've NEVER to come back. There are also two methods to stop them sending letters which is to issue them with a warning that they are causing distress to an occupier or you can pay a solicitor £70ish or get the citizens advice to issue them a letter warning them that the 3 strikes for harrasment is in effect. The 3rd time they contact you from that point you can have capita in court for harrasment. They stop immediately when solicitors get involved and black list the Address. They also dont visit parts of Scotland that are known for being violent towards them.

Have spent a wee while arguing with a friend over the TV Licence today. I said you can't watch ANY live TV on ANY channel without one (e.g commerical channels ITV, C4, C5 and all live and +1 programmes from any cable stations). He said you CAN watch commercial channels with NO licence, as the licence only pertains to anything live/on demand from BBC - and owning the equipment to receive the live broadcasts. Who's right?

Goon tried to state he had seen a tv from the street when i pointed out that he would require a 30ft long neck to see into my living room he backed down. Same goon then appeared after my partner bought a portable tv for our daughter and asked her by name if she had a licence she replied truthfully with a stern No. The goon proceded to force entey and read my partner her rights. Two mins later i walk in through the front door with a mate from work who is MDP i confront the goon as to whats going on and my partner breaks down in tears. The goon proceeds to inform me she has been cautioned and is being done for licence evasion. I produce my e recipt of payments as its in my name. My mate who is ministry of defence police informs the goon he has 30 seconds to leave or he will arrest him with the intention of handing across to our local force the goon 💩a brick and left like the clappers. He later lost his job for illegally entering our building by means.of.deception and illegally entering our property with my mate giving evidence. Big win for us as these goons will never bother us again. Big win for our building as one of our residents is a police officer albeit MDP.

BBC aren't allowed to take advertising to broadcast in the UK, it's forbidden by government contract. BBC Worldwide (their commercial arm) makes good money selling DVDs etc all over the world but again, they're not allowed to use any of that money within the UK. BBC were also forced by the government to pay for all of the upgrades required to the broadcasting masts and equipment, to allow all TV channels to broadcast on digital services. None of that was funded by any commercial TV company but they all use the network. Digital TV was forced on the network to free up the UHF band for military use, so, by and for the government but paid for entirely by the BBC. S4C the Welsh language TV station owned and operated by Ch4 is largely funded by the TV licence fee too, more just an interesting fact than a valid argument, unless you're trying to learn Welsh.

Create a new Iplayer account. Different name and address/postcode. They can't say you need one by linking your account. If you want to watch live TV then make sure you install your antenna in the loft and make sure your TV can't be viewed from someone looking into the window. Tell them you don't need one and don't let any enforcement thugs into your house. Job done 👍. I have never ever paid for a TV licence in my entire life.

I have moved into a flat with an aerial wire that is fitted along the floor but I do not watch live tv. I am slightly concerned however, that if an inspector turned up and they see the wire is there - even though it’s not connected they may not accept it is not in use. With no broadcast reception it is a *MONITOR*. One simple way to avoid doubt is to remove the TV antenna, assuming it's not in use. In my case, I've removed antennas, associated cables AND wall ports, so that would force the use of a portable antenna.. which I don't have.. and they are shit. 😅

I am a pensioner. Up until recently I have had a TV licence. Now I have decided not to watch live TV or BBC I player, but I have itv and Channel 5 catch up along with Prime , discovery and Britbox. I am not technical. I have managed to delete bbc I player from my screen but I have freeview and all the others above. My question is do they have to catch me in the act of watching live TV broadcast or is the mere fact my TV is still hooked up for it enough to prosecute? I ceased buying a TV licence in 2006 and don't miss live TV at all. A massive saving of over £2,000 so far. Another reason for stopping is my protest at ridiculous salaries to presenters, and more recently, the use of offensive language on entertainment programs broadcast at 1830, weekdays on Radio 4. Occasional hotel stays and looking through a TV magazine, allowed me to confirm my view! I only view items on KZbin, or similar free to view internet based content, and I buy DVD videos 10 for £1 from charity shops or occasional sets from online suppliers (DVDs don't get erased). I watch my choice of interesting channels such as this. Thanks for another great video.

Quite a few countries in Europe, and some elsewhere, have TV licences. Each have very different rules and methods of enforcement. In the UK it only pays for the BBC. But without a licence you can't watch ANY TV station while it is being broadcast. That includes stations such as CNN who broadcast their station on KZbin. A completely indefensible rule, but that is the law. More and more people in the UK are turning against the BBC because of blatant political bias. Others, specially younger people, are stopping watching old style TV because they now have many other choices through streaming services. They actually send people out to knock on the door of people who do not have a TV licence. They have no right of entry and no right to demand answers. Consequently, the only people who get caught are those who do not understand that they can tell these people to go take a running jump. They may also try other methods to intimidate people in to a confession, but they are all flawed when it comes to proving anything. If they get in to your house, they may then be able to gather evidence that leads to a prosecution. The licence costs £159 per year. The fine for non-payment tends to be about that same amount. You can't be sent to prison for not having a licence, but you can if you fail to pay the fine.

A licence is not required for streaming services EXCEPT if it is a LIVE broadcast eg live football on amazon or itvx or all4 That would be prosecutable if proven

Genuine question: I haven't watch any BBC production for years ... other than the Blackadder and Red Dwarf cd's that I bought.... I do however listen to Radio 4, while I make breakfast ... I believe I still have to pay for my licence.

Right you're a solicitor so ITV doesn't charge you for watching them so why do you have to pay a TV licence to watch ITV which is a free can you find out and let everybody know

What is considered "installed for the purpose of"? I want to watch DVDs and use a games console on a TV and I don't want to give the BBC a penny for that let alone £159 every year for that. The BBC is a loathsome corporation, but I will never ever hate them as much as they hate me.

Would be easier if certain apps like ITVX has a live TV version and a catch up version to avoid any confusion as to why you have an app installed. And / or a requirement for you to enter a licence number or house address before allowing you to know watch I've TV.

I cancelled my tv licence 9 years ago because I wasn't watching live streaming tv etc. Nor was I happy funding their propaganda. However, I still have to waste time every couple of years completing a repetitive (how many times do you have to state you don't need it?) online "No Licence Needed" form. I have a Netflix subscription and watch a lot of old stuff on KZbin - more than sufficient. One odd thing, though - I have a smart tv, on which I can delete any app _except the iPlayer app!_ - it won't budge. I've not watched it in 9 years and I've no intention of ever watching it. Why don't the BBC just give up harassing people?

So let me get this straight, I have a TV but don't watch any live broadcasts. I have sky Q but don't watch live broadcast. The only things I watch are on Prime video, Paramount plus and Netflix, all streamed by Sky Q or downloaded to a device. As for Sky I only watch occasional movies or series but again only after downloading the movie or whole season. I never watch or record a live broadcast. I never watch or download anything from the BBC and never use iplayer. In theory I don't require a licence but according to TV licensing I do require a licence as my TV and Sky can receive live broadcast, irrespective of whether I watch them or not. So is it just the watching and recording or the equipment too. If I don't require a licence then I'll cancel it, but if they prosecute is the onus on me to prove I don't watch or record, or on the BBC to prove I actual do watch and record, or is it just a given that if your equipment can receive life broadcasts then you must be watching it? I really would like some clarification before coughing up for something I potentially don't require.

How do I stop the government ,giving them payment ccjs for licence I don't have or need . Twice last year they did this in my absence and 40 pounds is alot from 200 benefit. I don't watch live or BBC.

Cancelled mine circa 2008... got fed up with less and less to watch of interest to me, So I use my tvs for DVDs/Blue Rays and You Tube vids (not anything that could constitute a streamed telly broadcast) and I even have some little old b/w sets to watch very vintage stuff on. MILES more fun to be had than watching linear tv folks! :)

In 2011 in UK I bought a TV from Amazon and the second day a inspector came to my apartment asking me to pay for a TV license. I told him I bought it just to play PlayStation nothing more I don't want to watch any live channels then he told me you need to pay for a license because you a cable already installed in the apartment.

Cancelled mine about 2 yrs ago, told them i did not want to watch their biased, woke TV. I have subscribed to Netflix and choose my own shows to view. I received 3 threatened letters and an'agent came to my door when i was out, a card was put through the door. I contacted the BBC again and said i had informed them i would not be watching live TV and if they continued to harass me I would get legal advice. Got a letter saying they would contact me in 3 yrs to see if i had changed my mind. I won't.

There's even more grey areas, like for KZbin. You don't need a license for watching an individuals live stream, BUT sometimes eg. Sky Sports show a portion of their F1 shows live on KZbin, and for that you are meant to legally have a license to watch.

What do you mean by live tv. Does watching live tv coverage of elections in Pakistan or India broadcasted by an indian or pakistani channel from overseas fall under the definition of live tv, or does it only include indigenous channels like BBC itv ch4? Please clarify.
