Kate Jackson was the best Angel hands down. And her creative input, her beauty and charisma and her acting performance, her adding gravitas to the show, all of that, the whole package, really made the show. Why didn't they mention Kate's outstanding performance in "Making Love"? She was extremely close to an Oscar nomination! I will love Kate Jackson forever!

Goldberg: "...and we had to tell Kate that she couldn't do it (Kramer vs. Kramer)...". What a lousy excuse! Here's what really happened: Though the producers of Kramer changed the movie’s schedule three times to accommodate Kate's Charlie’s Angels schedule, Aaron Spelling was determined not to let her do the movie. He switched her Angels schedule every time so the new Kramer schedule didn’t work. Finally he told the producers, “If she does the movie, it will never see the light of day!” because he’d file an injunction against them. Spelling was afraid if any of the actresses did a movie, they would think they were movie stars and leave the show. How wrong he was! If he had allowed Kate to take that golden opportunity, she would have stayed with the show as long as it lasted. He needlessly, intentionally kept Kate from doing Kramer. So she decided she would finish that third season, then leave the show. This is according to Kate!

They lost everything when they hired Tanya. She was so unlike all the others who came before her. Not pretty, not glamorous, and her character was not credible as a detective. Core viewers of the show realized Shelley was actually good when they saw how horrible Tanya was in the show. She was basically ignored by the press and rejected by the show's fans. And that was how the show met sudden death.

@@kelsey1467 That's a really good point. A hit show just can't build any kind of momentum with a constantly changing cast. On the other hand, I've been binge watching another Spelling Goldberg favorite from that era, Starsky & Hutch. I sure wish I could have done a TV Tales on that one. Their chemistry together, great acting, great guest stars, and fine writing really made that show underrated. Not only did it lead to Lethal Weapon and so many 'cop buddy' shows, but it was just great TV, especially for that era. Mr. Spelling really knew how to pick winners!

@@kelsey1467 Good question! I think I just like a great show with great writing, period. lol These days, I would say few shows grab me very much. I love Better Call Saul, which is very much a narrative with evolving plots. I think that formula works best, too. If you go back to classic TV from the 70s, even shows with a case of the week still had a nice narrative carrying the characters forward- like Emergency! had wild rescues every week, but the chemistry of the firefighters between rescues and their activities always drove the overall show that week, or the doctors at Rampart, as the case might be. Monk is a good example of narrative driving the overall plot, while a different case each week sometimes adds to the narrative, or gets in its way. Really great writing and acting on that show!

Kate Jackson was and will always be Angel #1, the woman who created it, the best actress, the Angel they were never able to replace. She made the show. KATE WAS THE BEST ANGEL. Farrah was the phenom, Jaclyn was third banana which suited her well. She was never able to be the leader or the phenom. The original Angels had chemistry and true friendship. 1. Kate, 2. Farrah, 3. Another thing that is so disturbing about these stories is how these artists - Farrah and Kate in particular - wanted to grow in their art - and the men running things wanted to keep them pigeon into these roles that focused more on how they looked than on their acting talents. Farrah was not a diva or selfish in the way they portrayed her. Look at any of her early days interviews and you see a young woman who was humble, not into the Hollywood nightlife, was a bit uncomfortable with all of the sex-symbol attention, and who really wanted to do serious acting. It took her a while to get something like The Burning Bed - and her performance helped to redeem her reputation and show people that not only could she play a complex dramatic role, but that she really wanted to. And for Kate to not be allowed to take on what could have been a career and life-changing role, was just dirty.

Thanks for your high praise! I've said many times that Kate was the glue that really helped put the parts of the show together in the beginning- and held it together as long as she was there. In many ways, all six original angels were mistreated in one way or another during the course of the show, but alas...such is life. It's often unfair. At least I can say they are all fine ladies and real role models for women everywhere. That's perhaps the greatest legacy of Charlie's Angels. And one even Mr. Spelling would likely agree with...

It's with a very heavy heart I must report the death of another Angel- in fact, my personal favorite, Tanya Roberts. She passed away officially on Jan 4, 2021, after fighting for her life since a collapse on Christmas Eve. After sitting across from her for a couple of interviews for E! in her own home, I have to say this is such shocking and devastating news. I'm at least proud that we captured her true essence in this Charlie's Angels special- and now I have to dedicate this documentary to her specifically. She was truly a character but also a very kind and sweet person. As I once told her, Tanya, don't ever lose your wings! May she rest in peace. . . **LATE BREAKING NEWS** Tanya is still alive after all! As Mark Twain once put it in a matter of speaking, "reports of her demise have been greatly exaggerated." There's absolutely no doubting the impact that Charlie's Angel's had on public consciousness. I was just a young boy of 7-12 years old during its original airing and so I'm pretty sure that it passed by me and most of my peers the first time around. We were very much aware of it during subsequent reruns, however, and there's no question that all of these ladies were front and centre icons of our sexual awakenings! I'd like to less shallow about it and tell you that we also really enjoyed the writing and the nuance of the characters etc but I'd be lying and you, dear reader, would know full well that I was lying! That being said, *now* there's a deeper appreciation of the show beyond the obvious beauty of its stars and it quite clearly deserves its fondly remembered place in the historical record of TV. This was a very enjoyable watch and it was entirely engaging to hear The "Angel's" tell their stories.

@@Kandik93 Well, I think you're very perceptive. And I'd say probably at least for a time Cheryl maybe went through a phase of being a bit 'high maintenance,' shall we say... They all did, really. But let's face it, being a Hollywood star brings out the worst in people most of the time. It's true! After all, it's just human nature when you're surrounded by that kind of territory. But, I can honestly say all the angels grew to be genuine good people, as they say in the south. And Cheryl has definitely mellowed a great deal since getting out of SoCal and into the Texas Hill Country. I think she would say she's now living her best life- and what a blessing that must be after all the hysteria and hype through the years to come out on the other side- not a drug addict or train wreck like so many others who fell hard over Tinseltown.

@@Kandik93 No, it's definitely not just you. I sense a certain arrogance in Cheryl. The way she said what you mentioned. Also in interviews she gave in recent years. I also wonder what would Cheryl's career have looked like if she hadn't done the bikini and skimpy outfit routine she did so frequently on Charlie's Angels. Yes, Spelling hired her for exactly that and she was more than willing to do it. Although she apparently once taught Spelling a lesson by wearing the tiniest bikini. Still I'm not convinced. Seriously most of Cheryl's photoshoots were her in the skimpiest outfits and she didn't seem to mind. Unlike Jaclyn, who according to someone behind the scenes, wasn't too comfortable doing swimsuit scenes yet she was always radiant when the cameras were rolling. She'd modestly cover up as soon as the director gave her the okay. Jaclyn also never did sexy photo shoots. Just very few but then she stopped. Farrah and Tanya did the sexy routine, too, but not to the extent Cheryl did. It wasn't her acring skills or singing that made her career. If Cheryl had refused to be a sex kitten, she would have had no career!

I like all of the original ladies and yes, Farrah stood out because she was blonde, very pretty and all that hair. I also noticed LOTS of sun tanning (the sun ages the skin prematurely) in the all American blonde girl and knew that Farrah's beauty was momentary. In terms of real beauty, Jaclyn Smith was the actual stunner! Kate Jackson wasn't too bad and both Kate and Jackie aged beautifully but Farrah didn't. Thank you for that sentiment! I thought about TV Tales recently when we tragically lost Eddie Van Halen. Before writing and producing this episode on Charlie's Angels, I started on One Day At A Time- just as Valerie Bertinelli had left Ed and their rocky marriage behind. We'd had a set visit with her on Touched By An Angel out in Utah, but the rocker in me kept wanting to add a lot to the story about Van Halen. lol You know, I actually was going for sort of a Yoko Ono motif since Valerie and David Lee Roth had so much friction. My boss, Robert Bentley, said this isn't a music show, it's about TV. lol Unfortunately, that whole episode fell through last minute because Bonnie Franklin refused to discuss the series in an interview. We'd already gotten some great stuff from the other actors. By the time we aired this episode on the Angels, we were strongly exploring repackaging it as a True Hollywood Story, instead. TV Tales was doomed from many casts not wanting the behind-the-scenes truth to come out. Such is life in Hollywood...never quite what it seems! lol

All six actresses have their own qualities and attributes that made them unique. In this special (which was broadcast back in 2003) the ladies all looked great. For my money, Kate Jackson was the lynchpin of the show. She was the best actress and her character Sabrina was the only one who really came across with believability as a detective. As likeable as her costars are, they were the eye candy on the show. Jackson provided the substance the series otherwise lacked.

Well said! I share that same conclusion in my blog... The other actresses all blossomed into fine talents, but Kate was the one with real experience and craft on the series-- and it showed!

@@damianlatimer5753 As we mentioned, Kate wanted to do more movies and when she lost out on a great part in 'Making Love,' that pretty much sealed her fate that she wanted out. She really was the unsung hero of the Angels, though, since the show never really recovered from her departure...

@Mike H. I think you're referring to "Kramer vs. Kramer" because that's the movie Kate wasn't allowed to do by the producers? That must have been devastating for her. How could they do this to her? I loved "Making Love". She was wonderful in it and I heard that she missed an Oscar nomination only by one vote to Debra Winger. If that's true that would be so unfair, too! I so agree with you on Kate being the unsung hero of the Angels. She was the one who had come up with the name and the concept of the show. Without Kate Jackson there would have never been "Charlie's Angels". And yes, she was/is such a gifted actress. Those scripts may not have provided lots of variation but Kate just made it happen anyway. Her acting was very subtle in scenes where others would just have been boring. She wasn't. And she was not just smart but a lot of fun, had awesome action scenes and was so credible doing cop. And just as beautiful as the other angels. She just wasn't into the whole glamor thing which was also a reason I love her. Also in the romantic scenes she had it wasn't just kissing and looking sexy but the emotions she conveyed seemed so real. Outstanding acting skills! She was so crucial to Charlie's Angels and her departure was the end of it although many don't want to admit it.

I never understood the “Farah frenzy” you describe here ,Farah never made a “click” with me , for myself the show started to really take-off when Cheryl got onboard ,loved her instantly ,and she had great acting skills besides her obvious beauty !! To this day I still love watching Charlie’s Angels with Cheryl😍 being my own Angel !! (*Through your video here I learned about Cheryl's😅 “Farah Fawcet minor” joke !! lol !! incredible sense of humor by Cheryl ) P.S.: My favorite episode ever : “Angel on my Mind” 😍where Kris loses her memory and starts a journey deep in her memories to find a way out !! awesome !!

@@en6278 Bringing in viewers is not that just the actresses' responsibility. The writers have to come up with good stories and credible characters. The declining ratings happened even with Jaclyn and Cheryl around. Of course there are also people like Tanya who thought stripping was all it took to win a big audience. We proved her and S-G wrong.

The way Farrah quit the show nd Lee Majors was such a bad karma.......
@mikeh.9734
@mikeh.9734 5 жыл бұрын
I've often wondered if they later regretted how it all went down. After all, their marriage disintegrated thereafter and both had large obstacles in their lives from then on. Ironically, Lee moved to Houston about 7 years ago and comes back and forth on occasion.....the same place Farrah returned to so many times to visit and stay with her parents in The Woodlands. I wish Lee would agree to a sit-down interview to go over his very fascinating life. Time may be running out for that, though...

Another consequence of Farrah's exit is that because Jay Bernstein was relatively successful in removing Farrah from her contractual obligations, it inspired two other actresses managed by Bernstein to leave their respective shows: Lynda Carter on Wonder Woman and Suzanne Somers on Three's Company. If Farrah had never left, who knows if those other actresses would have followed in her footsteps or not?

Yes, I think so as well. Lee was a male chauvinist, but compared to Ryan O' Neal, he was a prince. Too bad Majors let his male ego get in the way.

@Flenif2247 I certainly can't argue with that, though I think perhaps all of Hollywood had a terrible culture against women in those days- ironically, while some rail against Aaron Spelling for contributing to that, he actually helped liberate women by being among the first to cast them in starring roles. Without the Angels to blaze a trail, who knows what primetime TV may have looked like for female stars?
