Nordic (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark) police education (3-4 years, bachelor's degree) vs. American police training (6-8 months). There is no time for learning psychology or how to de-escalate aggression by verbal communication and body language, if the training period is as short as the training of a private rifleman in a reservist army. Police is also a much more respected profession among young people in the Nordics, and the police colleges get to choose only the most suitable applicants in the long process of comprehensive physical, psychological and academic tests. In Finland, for example, there are 15 applicants for each new police cadet. Of course American policemen and -women may learn these skills while working with good, more experienced collagues, but this is not always possible, especially in smaller departments.

Laughter is better at diffusing an angry person rather than shouting at the top of your lungs and threatening to shot them. I've heard in USA that in some States Police training only takes 2-3 weeks at the lowest, while in Norway it takes 3 years, a full background check, if anything on you history, even traffic violating I think may make it impossible for a person to get accepted to the academy. I remember one time I was driving I noticed a police cruiser behind me, kept going the same roads I was, and I noticed on roundabouts and turns, they didn't use their indicators. When I saw that happened several times, I started blinking my hazard lights quickly to let them know. Me using hazard lights if not called got it, is a violation, so they ended up flashing the blue lights and I stopped at a busstop They asked why I kept using my hazard lights, and I responded kindly, I just noticed on my rearview mirror that you didn't use indicators. You are the police and are not above the law, but should uphold it right. His face turned red with embarrassment, nodded and said thank you for letting us know, we will do better. You are free to drive along xD

In America the average police academy training program is 19 weeks. In Norway, you are required to complete 3 years with a bachelor paper to become a police officer. Additionally one of the courses is ethics, and is considered to be crucial in making a good law enforcement officer. From what i understand, Us police academy have a course on how to deal with civilians. However the couse has been criticized for training officers to dehumanise civilians and develop aggressive behavior. That's my theory anyway.

The scandinavian model is to logic to simple to humane to fair for a majority of americans to optin for it. The only way to fix the US is for the strongest party to win and the right wing will kill to keep things as they are or to even make things worse. This is literally why we generally trust our police in the Nordic Countries. Not that they can't make a fuckup too, but in general they are very well trained in psychology and absolutely most arrests are nonviolent. Even when a situation escalates they are trained to use minimum force required. For instance a provocateur politician held a meeting in Aarhus (denmark) against immigration and where attacked by a man with a knife. The police shot the man in his leg (one single shot) disarmed him and provided first aid during his arrest, until he could be taken to a hospital. You only use the force necessary to dissolve the situation and nothing more. Always keeping the situation as calm as possible, that is basic knowledge anyone coming through police training should know by heart.

It is an international language, so it is nice to be able to communicate with people who can't speak Norwegian. Especially since we have a lot of tourists and immigrants in Norway and we come across a lot of English entertainment, etc. When we attend ungdomsskolen (junior high?), which is 8-10th grade, we can decide to learn either german, spanish or french, the options may vary from school to school depending on the available teachers, in addition to Norwegian and English. If the student doesn't want to learn another language, it is possible to specialize in Norwegian or English. Norwegian consists of two written languages, bokmål and nynorsk. Most people in Norway know English.

@@bumgarner4987 We are considered to be one of the best countries to speak English, besides native speakers of course. The education system in Norway really works, and we are well established in both written form and in spoken form. It can depend from generation to generation of course. Many elderly people can't talk English to save their lives. It's more common for younger people to speak English fluently. The reason for this is because we've had English since first grade, but also because we socially active on platforms that uses English and television.

Danish citizen here. I was once stopped with a gram of weed on me. Here's how it went down: Was walking across a parking lot with groceries. Two civilian cops come right up to me. Shows badge "Hello, this is the police, can we have a look in your pockets?" I was in a temporary visitation zone so "yeah" Guy cop asks if I have anything in my pockets I shouldn't have. I say no. He goes through 3 pockets thorougly, so I knew I was fucked. I start grabbing into my pocket to get the gram He tells me to keep my hands visible I dig down into my pockets too fast to hear him and stop He does nothing I pull up the gram and say "Eh, you got me" Female cop pulls out ticketbook I hand over the gram to male cop and he says "thanks" I get told I'm being fined 1500 kroner (about 220dollars) I accept my ticket. Both cops tells me to have a nice day with a polite demeanor. I say "likewise" I was grumpy after, but I knew the risks. I get my ticket in the mail.

What you have to understand is that - the difference in time taken to pass the academy aside - there's something else that is very different in Scandinavia, which weighs in a lot heavier than "just sending US cops to Norway". I'm talking about the Scandinavian infrastructure of course; you'd have to fundamentally change your system to get to a level where this would be feasible and dare I say it, adopt the dreaded socialist model. The whole point is that our systems are generally humane. No one needs to be homeless, no one needs to go hungry. This creates a base of trust in the individual, and THAT is basically why our societies thrive; because we build upon trust rather than distrust. Binds things together and leaves the individual with a notion that, say carrying a weapon in public is preposterous. Bad things happen over here, sure, but the scale is very different. Tl;dr you'd have to become socialist to achieve this.

@theuniversewithin744 жыл бұрын
@@ParaWiki my bad, it's supposedly 3 years in the US as well. But I do believe Norwegian police has superior education. It's two completely different environments, but there are so many thousand videos of US police officers not even trying to de-escalate situations, but end up power tripping instead. Yes, it's a mix of what they're up against on a daily basis and bad education. But I think the selection process needs to deny individuals that aren't suited. These guys carry lethal firearms and it should always be the last resort. Always. So many lives could've been spared if it wasn't for trigger happy gorillas swimming in fear every single day.
@theuniversewithin744 жыл бұрын
@@ParaWiki either way, things have to improve. Tragic that so many people have to die and be treated poorly before things errupt into what we see now in the US. It's almost sarcastic (not even ironic) that the protests produces so much more police brutality. It's only natural that bad things happen when it gets this heated, but it's just sad to witness. It's the perfect storm, really. Millions losing their jobs and staying at home for months due to the pandemic. But this was bound to happen. It just got turbocharged from the lockdown. George Floyd getting killed would've started riots any day. I'm just hoping the US comes out on the other end as a more mature society, though I have my doubts.

(I made corrections and finally found the video footage. It's been years since I've seen this) Sounds like a viking! This video is humorous, but it wouldn't be funny if it happened in the US. See, these police officers are good, and they care. Their priority is to serve and protect. In the US, it's disgraceful that they'd just kill someone and use it as an excuse. It is an excuse. Nobody has to kill. Nobody has to use extreme violence. Ask anybody outside the US and in the US. They say, those officers generally kill. Everyone's afraid they'd even bump into them. And, that they could just stop you randomly whilst driving and create a problem. It would feel like walking on eggshells. You flinch, or they can call it flinching, then you're shot dead. A guy is asked to show his ID. He says ok and pulls out his ID, then is shot dead. Mother and child gets put inside a cop cruiser. Her hands are handcuffed. She did ask him why he shot him, because he told him to get his ID. It's very graphic to watch. Watch both links. The little girl said I don't want you to get "shooted" That's the video she filmed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYXOeq2bj6eeodE This link is the one I saw in Facebook years ago that has footage inside the vehicle where the poor little girl advises her mom and how she doesn't want her to get shooted: www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/mom-i-don-t-want-you-to-get-shooted-in-video-girl-begs-mother-for-quiet-after-castile-killing/story-7ZW18CEO8RMHpAR7UVSnGJ.html It is so sad...so sad that a little girl is so aware of the danger... breaks my heart. Some guy just posted a comment and says it's lies? Here's some proof. I can't remember word per word, but I summarized it very well. The kid doesn't want her mom to die....saw a death and was afraid it would happen to her! That's awareness! And fear from a little kid! The dude was reaching for his ID. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But it is what it is. Look at the links yourself. Liar my ass. Tons of articles you can read following up on the case... excuse after excuse... he had no reason to kill him! Period! Why are their protests in America?! Because people see too many of these cases... they are scared! They are angry! And they don't want this to happen anymore. Racism is real. Very real over there. If you wanna say the cop wasn't caucasian... the dude was chinese, like myself. But he and the cops there... have done a lot of wrong... some are racists. Some are violent. Some abuse their power. The whole system, everyone is complaining about. Nobody should be afraid to get pulled over and get shot! Especially if they're black! A taillight? What is it now? A 20$ bill? There was a post on Twitter saying, (from a white man) that he once paid with a fake 20 dollar bill...he didn't even know it was fake. But he tells jokes about it at parties... he doesn't get 4 cops to bend down send kneel on him until he suffocates and dies! In that post, he said, that's white privilege. It's so sad. There is racism. There is hostility. Anyone who says there isn't, I dare you to continue that lie... why is the whole world voicing out our opinion? Because racism is wrong! And what the cops do to handle black Americans is wrong. There are so many deaths. So many. They shouldn't live with the anxiety and fear, that at any moment, something so small, can escalate so fast and so bad...that they have to fear for their lives! Period. #blacklivesmatter #philandocastile (Philando Castile case)

Dear officers depicted here in this video, thank you for showing the other police of the world how things SHOULD be done. That is, with sober professionality and even a bit of humor. They stay above it all and don't let themselves get drawn into the drunken man's agitation and couldn't care less about his insults! Police who let themselves get riled by insults and belligerence are weak, emotionally like children, show they haven't retained anything from their training and basically admit that they're insecure (there's not really any incidence of excessive-force where police insecurity is not involved). In this video, the one officer says he didn't feel threatened when get got kicked -- and the proof is that even with this escalation, they never went beyond what's required by procedure. He didn't think "why you! Now I'm gonna teach you a lesson!" And that's the point! Any time "teach-you-a-lesson" thinking enters the mix, that's already a FAIL for the cop. That this is NOT the case in the U.S. is a foregone truth. But even in Canada there are horrific examples of blatant insecurity resulting in excessive force: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIHNlJ2qqstjbtE (videos of the altercation in full-length should also be watched). Here, an RCMP officer attacks a First Nations chief after some posturing and name-calling on the chief's part and after the chief tries to protect his wife. The officer bravely waits (sarcasm) until his partner has the chief's arm behind the back before he blindsides the chief with a running, full-on Rambo elbow to the face. Remember, up 'til that point, the incidence was WITHOUT INJURY. Then, when the chief is helpless and pinned down on the ground by both officers, the same officer gratuitously punches the chief hard in the face. The chief's face was a mess. For all of the chief's insults and belligerence, the Rambo-RCMP should have cared less about it all. Gods! One can only assume that officer got pussy-whipped earlier that day or something and decided to take it out on the job. Or worse he's like that because all his colleagues are like that. In any case, we can only hope this officer pays dearly for this mistake.
