Another help in cold weather is to cover the bike overnight if you don't have a shed/garage - doesn't have to be a fancy fitted cover, it can be as simple as draping a thick blanket over the tank and seat so it drapes over the engine. Seems silly, but it really helps to prevent moisture from condensation. I used to do this all the time and noticed a difference the next morning if I forgot.

Nice point right there! Furniture blankets are pretty cheap at Harbor Freight and would work well. Great point!

Good points Matt ! Fuel injection is handy ... and my 2 bikes have it (Versys-X300 and Yamaha XT250) ... but my last carb'd bike (CRF230) did great in the cold -- just required a little warm up before taking off fast. Folks that can't manage carbs probably don't have much yard equipment (urban/city dwellers?) ... my riding mower/push mower/weed-eater/leaf blower/chainsaw/hedge trimmer ... all have carbs. When I blow leaves in the fall, I haven't stopped and tried to find a FI blower - LOL ! (The TW was on my list when I got that XT250 ... just found a deal on it I needed to take 😉👍) Keep up the good work !

All bikes today come from the factory running extremely lean, this is due to the EPA requirements for emissions, this affects the bike much more in the cold where it needs a richer fuel mixture to run. The way to fix this is to remove the cap over the mixture screw and turn it out 1/2 turn at a time until the bike runs better in the cold. You may also have to shim the needle on the carb up about 20-thousandths with a small washer. This will richen the mixture and cause the bike to run perfectly normally and it will no longer surge or give hard starting issues in cold weather. Hope this helps.

Good to know Billy! Thanks for the insight. I will check the air/fuel mixture screw. We don't have emissions here where I live so it's not illegal here........yet!

follow up question for ya! in winter do you find that the idle speed seems to drop? mine seems awfully low right now it's about 45 in the day, high 20s at night. thinking i may need to bump up the idle for the next few months, just waiting on my tach to arrive.
@MOBStreet83
@MOBStreet83 6 ай бұрын
😂😂 No worries Alex! To answer your next question, no, I haven' t noticed a difference in the idle unless I leave the choke on for too long. It will kinda run itself out if I ride with the choke in the middle setting for too long.

@@MOBStreet83 yeah, i think in the end i just wasn't allowing it enough time to warm up. now i leave it fully open for about 35-45 seconds, and half way for about 4-5 minutes and she's back to purring like a kitten! next up oil change, EZ! then valve checks. little more intimidating just based on the number of parts i need to remove, but this process is pretty well documented. however, if you've got any tips on the "swingarm pivot bushes" or "control and meter cables" tasks, i haven't been able to find much info on those maintenance items. thanks again!

Don't forget you can pull that plug out of the air mix screw and give that a 1/2 turn out or so and sometimes you don't even need a choke! This works really great for lower elevation especially! Not sure why they think it needs to be so lean at idle from the factory.

Mr. Matt, nicely done as always! Here's a related 'issue' I ran into: 2 years ago, I parked my TW - Apparently fully topped off with 'bad gas'. I didn't ride last year - This year, I tried to start it.. Nope. New battery and Carb rebuild by certified Yama-tech.. *Full choke, it starts, *1/2 choke it dies, *No choke it dies.. When fired up / warmed up / moving - the throttle has to be blipped / backed-off almost non stop to keep the motor running, otherwise it either fails like no fuel, or, fails like it was over fueled.. Bogs, breakup, sputters, etc. It ran 100% prior to this [bad gas situation as I like to call it] Also: The fuel system was purged w/ and is full of 91 octane I believe - it's what my friend had on hand. So no clue why it's being so damn temperamental.. Sucks to have it just sitting / collecting dust now.. Any ideeaars? =D Sam -
@MOBStreet83
@MOBStreet83 8 ай бұрын
Sam, have you tried Marvel Mystery Oil Sprayed into the intake while the bike is running. It sounds like the bad gas could be on the valves and it could be causing the valves to stick a bit. A spray bottle with the oil while the bike is running takes the oil in and helps clean the valves. I have used it many a times with bad fuel vehicles. I hope that helps!

What jets do you have in it? Where i live close to sea level they are a PITA to start with the stock jets no matter the weather. A 130 main, 34 pilot and pilot screw adjustments and they start with a stab of the button with no choke unless the temps are in the 50's or lower then you need the choke.

@@MOBStreet83 The factory jets are good at altitude but the bikes are way lean at closer to sea level. Where I live im literally like 20' above sea level. Max altitude is like 1000' or so that I ride in currently.

I have a 150cc Honda which has a carbeurator too, but it has a stageless choke....And i think it's better than this one on TW200, because I can do fine tuning and can adjust level of choke better when starting my bike in cold weather....So, I think Yamaha' d better switch to that kind of choke on these TW200 s....

Guitar strings work really good for cleaning carbs as well! All it takes is one time with a plugged carb to learn your lesson haha. shut off your pet cock and personally if I'm not riding in the next two weeks I drain my carb and cycle the choke with the fuel shut off while cranking the engine to get the last gas out of all the circuits. Never had a problem since but I have had a bike, even with non ethanol gas refuse to start from sitting too long.

Matt, it's NOT the starting that's inconvenient, it's waiting for the bike to warm up. I live in Florida and there was never an instance when you didn't have to wait minutes for the engine to reach proper riding temperature. Now I can jump on my KLX 230s or my Ruckus, fire them up and go. You didn't need to talk down about "much too complicated " for some folks.
@MOBStreet83
@MOBStreet83 8 ай бұрын
No, that's not what I was saying. It's those who have been bad mouthing it without even riding the bike before. Those who have said "I'll never buy one until it has FI". Those are the ones that drive me nuts and those were the ones I was talking to.
@OGkush69x

Brother if you just turn on your bike and “go” without letting it warm up first, you are doing damage and putting lots of wear and stress on your engine. You have to let the oil warm up at least a couple minutes before taking off on a cold morning. Looks like waiting a couple min for a carb to warm is extra protection to make sure you don’t take off on a cold engine and cause damage😂 2birds with one stone kinda thing;)
@OGkush69x
@OGkush69x 7 ай бұрын
Also there has been times where it was a hot day and i needed to take off right away and did not have time to “warm up” i simply took off with the choke out as soon as i turned it on, or like you said “get up and go” 😂 of course i babied the throttle just as i would on any of my fuel injected cars for a couple minutes until it warms up. Mobstreet is right ppl just like to bad mouth without knowing😮‍💨✌️
