NOTE : For anyone that has watched the video and is attempting to make the repair....at 15:07 note that the rubber sleeve is in TWO HALVES but that the sides are TAPERED with the thicker portion toward the outside ends of the rod. Also pay attention that the tiny plastic bushing / retainers have a raised rail which holds the roller in place once slipped into the black plastic frame. I think that the rubber taper is so that once the rim of the CD slides into the player, ( the center opening has a wider gap ) the progressively thicker rubber sleeve gets a slightly stronger grip as it draws in the CD towards the spindle. This is the BEST repair video I have viewed . THANKS Electronics Fool

Just fixed a friend's CD player, it had the crack in the gear casing. Crack was between the casing and the flange for the screw that holds it down, so would never have noticed it if I hadn't tried to lift the casing like you suggested, so thanks for your help! Didn't have superglue to hand, so used a resin glue to bond the accessible edge of the casing to the metal underneath, and used a few drops of chlorinated solvent to melt the plastic of the casing back on to the screw flange. Let's see if it holds.

Thanks for a great video - I had the clicking eject problem and as suggested this was indeed a cracked cover on the gears - a drop of superglue seems to have sorted the problem. the trickiest part was the damper and springs reassembly. Cheers, Phil

Great vid, repaired my CD player in my 06 Malibu using your instructions. Kind of a PITA , had to remove, and reinstall CD, radio unit twice, once to verify gear damage, and once to install damaged gear. Cost was 10$, but much cheaper than sending to a repair facility which wanted 175 to 200$ to fix. By the way, I found a source for replacement gears, (Ali express), they are sold by brand of CD, and overall diameter of gear,(verify gear size before ordering), and they are sold at 10 part minimum order, and it takes about a month for delivery as they come from China, but at a buck per gear it"s not too bad.

Hi Workbench, greetings from England. Thank you for your really excellent video! Attempting to fix similar Clarion unit from my Nissan Tino V10. Please can you advise as all gear trains seem fine but I still have 'clicking' noises, or rather louder 'clucking' sounds. The roller drive gear seems fine but the 'jackknife mechanical action' shown so clearly in your final bench test is not happening on my bench! :( The sliding white moving parts seem the source of the 'clucking' sound, they shake when test current runs the motor, but do not move to assist loading/unloading. Should the disc ejection sequence first from inside the unit and then through its 'door' happen automatically when the head reaches the end of travel at centre of the CD? Sorry to ask but any help much appreciated! Kind regards, Rob.

After trying to clean it and putting it back together the motor doesn't pull in or push out the cd it is silent. I must of put the gears or its mechanism on wrong. When I manually turn the gears via the gear system, takes forever, but I can insert and eject the cd manually. @ThatElectronicsFool9 жыл бұрын
michael koch The clicking problem is usually the clear plastic gear case has cracked in the rear of the unit. The plastic tab that is screwed down will have broken off from the rest. You can make a small bracket to hold it down with some thin metal.

Thanks for mentioning this! I didn't mention it here, but the ribbons leading to the pickups often have a couple solder points for applying a bit of solder to bridge them together and prevent damaging the laser. Of course it has to be removed before putting back in service.

Hey bro great vid. I just took mine apart and found a crack too, in the wheel gear. I also found the back side bushing completely missing! I understand the bushings should move freely but what about the rubber sleeve? I assume it should be very tight and move with the axle? Is the down pressure when activated enough to hold the rubber sleeve from spinning on the axle?
@ThatElectronicsFool6 жыл бұрын
The rubber sleeve is a bit free to slip. Yes, it does rely on the downward pressure of the disc being moved in/out to grip the shaft. If it feels like it's too slippery, you may want to wipe the inside with a thin pipe cleaner soaked in alcohol, also wipe the shaft, but avoid touching it with your fingers to prevent oils from getting on it.

Eero Laukkanen I don't know where to get gears other than other broken mechanisms. I have been able to successfully replicate some gears using a silicone mold and 2 part resin mix, which I showed how to do in a previous video, if you're interested in seeing it. Cleaning the switches helps mechanisms that have failed due to incorrect positioning as long as nothing has broken in the process.

@ThatElectronicsFool6 жыл бұрын
If you mean the two springs on the sides that latch the white levers that hold the rollers up or down, those can be a bit tricky. You have to put the front side of the spring into the notch on the black piece first and then put the other side into the notch on the white lever. Kind of hard to describe exactly here, but I was planning to revisit this mechanism due to another problem that is common with them.
