I always wondered what happened to a tween if its host were to travel to the astral or outer planes. It's stuck in the border ethereal after all. A tween could kill your adventuring career, unless you never did anything other than solo adventures. An assassin with a bonded tween could be kind of scary. And if that failed you could always become a professional gambler. An evil wizard (or a desperate one) could purposely bond with a tween in order to improve his chances of accomplishing some important task, then when that's done phase to the border ethereal and kill his tween.
@TheBagOfHolding2 ай бұрын
The tween is also plotting against the wizard.

As far as I can tell, the first usage of "tween" as a description of age was from J.R.R. Tolkien, used to describe hobbits aged 20-33. Considering how much D&D borrows from Tolkien, I'm surprised that these are entirely unrelated to halflings.

I once created a (1e version) bard who used his abilities to alienate rather than charm or attract people. (For instance, he would deliberately sing off-key.) He was Chaotic Neutral, shunning other people. He ended up finding himself bound with a Tween. This suited him fine, because his luck improved, and others wouldn't go near him because of the bad luck effect.

Isn’t that Baxa illustration from Dark Sun? I never had the Fiend Folio MC, but that illustration looks familiar.
@AJPickett2 ай бұрын
Its certainly Tom Baxa art from 1992, Dark Sun was published 1991, so it may have been used twice, I don't know the specifics other than where I sourced the image, and that was the Monstrous Compenium (MC14) Fiend Folio Appendix (for 2nd edition AD&D).
@almitrahopkins18732 ай бұрын
@ Yeah, my brain isn’t clicking on where I saw it before. I want to say it was after the 2nd campaign setting boxed set, so it might have been recycled from the MC14 rather than the other way around. That was just as the dark times were getting into full swing, you know? It’s probably going to torture me enough to dig them out of storage for another read, so that’s a plus. Dark Sun always was my favorite, but hardly anyone wanted to actually play it. The artwork was such a departure from Easley and Elmore that it made a huge impact in my memory.
