Atrioc telling the strategy guide story made so many memories surface. I completely forgot about buying them when I was young. And I totally relate to it. Such an incredibly heartwarming story for me and for some reason it struck a chord. Really was a fantastic point in my life when my mom would actually sit down with me and play games when I was a kid. It made me tear up for some reason. Really one of the favorite times in my life. Also the library story was so fucking hilarious to me. Like genuinely the loudest I’ve laughed to a Big A story. Like I remember printing some stuff from the school library, but the thought of trying to get an entire guide and the printer running out of ink. That had me dying!

5:50 Actually Magnus has been the best pretty much the undisputed best since like ~2009-2010 or so. He was 18 at the time and stronger than the World Champion. He just only decided to compete for the World Championship title in 2013. He's been the best by far for 12+ years, nobody has even come close to taking his title or rank no. 1 rating in that time. Currently he's 60 pts above the World rank no. 2 player, and if you subtract 60 pts from that guy's rating you'll reach a player who's like rank no. 20. The World no. 2-14 or so players are all so close in strength that practically speaking they're interchangeable. Any of them could realistically occupy any position in that range, the world no. 10 player could magically be transported to the no. 2 spot tomorrow and nobody'd bat an eye (in fact almost all of the top 20 or so players have been ranked World no. 2-4 before). But not no. 1. None of them even stand a chance at challenging for no. 1

When the third was set Magnus was 19 points ahead of it, when the fourth was set Magnus was 51points ahead of it.

Ah I like magnus too man but all of this is very fanboyish lore. In the 2010-2011 era Magnus was regularly losing to Anand, Caruana and Karjakin and was consistently ranked second behind Anand. And he has also repeatedly described both Caruana and Ding liren as being close to his strength, even currently, when playing their best. Like i said i am a huge fan of Magnus too, but to me what is impressive about him as a player is not that he is just some otherwordly creature who is so far above and beyond anyone else's chess ability, but rather that he is able to consistently maintain his form and play his best which is just strong enough to beat everyone. Also Caruana brought him to tie breaks during their world championship where he barely lost. And Karjakin beat magnus multiple games during his title match but just lost the match. So those constitute coming pretty close i think.

Magnus was the best player in the world for both those years. And since mid 2011 has never lost the number 1 rank. EDIT: to try and avoid another person going um actually In 2010 he was number 1 for 5 of the 6 rating lists. In 2011 he was number 1 for 4 of the 6 rating list and the Anand didn't win a major tournament compared to Magnus' two. That's undisputed number 1 both years, genuinely who is in their right mind would say he wasn't number 1 given those results?

I wouldn't call that a short period. And while he refused to compete in both the 2010 and 2011 candidates, he was losing tournaments and games to a lot of players in his field. Now again, he was very obviously a top level player, perhaps even in fact the top level player, but i don't think you can definitively say he was the hands down best player even back then and certainly not that he was just undisputed. That's all I am disagreeing with here. He clearly had and still has plenty of competition, he is just ahead of it.
