I remember driving to Croatia with my parents early 00s using a map atlas. They barely knew English, had to cross Austria and slowenia on a 13 hour+ drive with NO TRAFFIC INFORMATION. One time we where stuck for 2 hours+ where we just had a picnic on the highway. I love my parents.

Before GPS and internet people used a road atlas or road map, looked at street signs, paid more attention to house numbers, asked for directions, or just took time out of ones day to explore and familiarize with a location. Looking from a different angle, there has been a huge shift in culture over the past few decades. People traveled less, often shopped at the first place they saw, and lived more routine lifestyles. Advertising has changed, consumerism has risen leading to increased driving, transportation was slower and less available, the list goes on. All of these compound on each other and resulted in less time spent traveling. Simply put they stopped and looked around.
@flipina3 ай бұрын
@TopOfLobby Some natural markers like trees were also used. Older people passed those on and they survive due to local language. GPS in my area is spotty and online maps are incomplete so my generation knows some of these markers. Some trees are so old the government is not allowed to cut them down.

It really is astounding how good old folks know street names. I mostly only remember the streets i lived in and then some, and thats it. they be knowing every corner and every street that branches from it. On th eother hand, i still remember the hassle when you were in a foreign country on vacation and had to first find the page of the map youre at, and then find your location and which way youre even looking lol

9:50 There are just so many layers to this. The more I looked at it went from sad to fun for students even the teacher. At first I thought about what class this could possibly be.Then about how maybe the teacher is odd and loves gossip. But, when I saw the listing of literature and the wording in the assignment it changed. Anyone who has experienced higher education might understand how grueling things can be but, assignments like this might be nice. Even as an “introvert” growing up a “date” was just picking a day to hang out with someone. I know if I was a student I would have to clarify if this “level 1 date” could be a friendly thing or if we were supposed to pretend like we were potentially romantically interested. From what I gather I’m sure the professor would have no problem with this. Especially because you could easily fill out a paragraph on how it became apparent how each person wanted different things. Someone wanting to flit or something serious while someone else just wanted to share a fun experience with someone else. I feel like a class like this can only exist at a university. As if this was a high school level class parents would have a lot to say. As there would definitely be outrage about students having to “find time to date” as well as other drama. I honestly feel like (I know classes exist to an extent at certain schools) communication, managing relationships, or just making friends would just be beneficial to society. As we know young people as a unit have worse mental health compared to other generations and young men specifically are as lonely and have few male friends. I know that people come and go in your lives especially after Highschool. But, if you do go on to pursue higher education try to maintain any bonds that you make. Like I personally think it’s better to lock in get your degree/papers and make a name for yourself. But, reality is like that for most people. It’s super annoying when people call you out of the blue after several years having either sold your information (phone number email) or how they want you to get in on this business opportunity (usually a pyramid scheme or a scam) I guess TLDR a class like that Harvard dating assignment sounds like fun. It definitely has room to teach people about life. While courses like speech or communication do exist they typically (at a high school level) only scratch the surface of things like “love languages” or “conflict management”. It might seem sad but, I think these things like teaching kids how to maintain healthy relationships legitimately would be a benefit society. As while little things can go a long way as they add up over the course of a relationship it is important to remember that relationships do take effort (for the most part) to maintain.

12:00 As someone who did this, its pretty easy 90% of the time because you would check a paper map and write down your preferred path in a "mapquest" style list (if it was outside your known area, inside we just knew where to go). But 10% of the time you got depressingly lost and then you had to do the walk of shame inside a gas station or store to ask for directions.

I used to run some deliveries pre-GPS, and every town where I live has a map somewhere along the main routes coming in. I'd pull up and park and look it up. So you had to have some basic local geography for where towns were and then be able to read a map. If you got lost you asked. For travel abroad you had just giant foldout roadmaps. My dad had a whole bin for most of Europe per country, and you'd buy a local map once you got to your destination city. Or just drive around and look for signs. Tbh it's crazy how we did it, some oldschoolers still try to give directions and I'm always like "yeah just give me the adress, I can look it up". GPS navigation top tier invention.

Fun fact about black lungs - even if you don't smoke a single cigarette your entire life and manage to avoid inhaling cigarette smoke as best as one possibly could you're still gonna have black spots on your lungs at like 40-50 years old. A perfectly healthy lung of a non-smoking man at 50 has black dots scattered around it. They don't really do anything - your lungs will work perfectly fine - but they're gonna be there.
