As a substitute it is crazy how many administrators that act like they are too good to do any work, while the teachers in the school are so nice and accommodating while having a WAY more stressful workload. (Not saying all administrators are like this, there are some administrators I can’t wait to see when I go substitute because they are so friendly as well as effective.) We don’t need more administrators, we need more adjunct teachers and assistive staff to deal to help teachers with controlling these extremely large classes as well as help keep up with following curriculum. Not to mention, some of these administrators gain their positions from being “good coaches” (paying them more so they will stay) rather than actually being good at handling discipline, scheduling, and pushing for more resources to help their student and faculty. Sorry I’ll stop yapping now.
@greenlittlecreature8472 ай бұрын
My school had a problem because all of the teachers wanted to be administrators since the administration did practically nothing at our school, except for getting paid more. About a fifth of our teachers became admins, and the rest demanded to become admins or they would go to a better paying school (our teachers made about 22k a year ☹️). The end result was that we had way too many admins, and not enough teachers. It got to a point where we only had one foreign language teacher and she had violated school code (and the law) on several occasions, but they couldn't fire her since we needed at least one foreign language teacher to stay open
@BIGWILL4172 ай бұрын
@@greenlittlecreature847 it’s a bureaucracy nightmare. So many admins it’s impossible to tell who’s really in charge. There is about to be a new problem on the horizon because many states issues emergency certification for teachers working in completing school and their teaching certificate, so there is probably about to be a lot of teachers let go because the process of getting a certificate is so much more strict than what it used to be. Almost makes it not even worth getting the cert.

What you were saying about commuting does ring true. Specifically the thing you are mentioning about needing to reduce highway lanes. The problem is not one of capacity, but rather throughput. If you want commutes to suck last, you have to reduce the number of actual cars on the road. You do that with a combination of increased housing availability close to places where people actually want to work and also by robust public transit. Coincidentally you can get both of those if you reduce total land area devoted to car infrastructure, removing single family zoning, and removing minimum parking requirements.

I can do whatever I want at work as long as the results come on time (or I have a good reason for them being delayed) and as long as I don't cause major financial hardship by being stupid. Both of these things are very easy to do if you use your brain from time to time which makes this job quite nice.

I'm Gen Z. 1998. In most companies, especially corporate, hard work gets you nowhere in life. You're often indirectly punished for it by being given more work because you can handle it. But you will NEVER in your life EVER receive a raise or promotion that isn't negligible. Shift leads at most fast food places, for example, only make like 50 cents to a dollar more per hour. That's ridiculous. Especially considering many of them basically do the job of a general manager and are often expected to work more hours and more positions. So there's the problem: Hard work is punished in modern corporate America.

Being a new grad being walking distance to my office is a big motivator for me, I think part of it too as Atrioc mentioned is getting face time with people - unless you’re actively networking or have high visibility work in a remote job it can be a little hard to move up in a company I’d imagine. I also like my coworkers / work culture
@firefox10332 ай бұрын
Got to disagree with you Big A. From my experience mangers get bonuses for hollowing out the company. All the company cares about and sees is the profits. And an easy way to make profit with no work is firing as many people as you can get away with. In my opinion I think bonuses should be tied to making as much or more profit as last year. While still having the same amount of employees or more. That to me is a sign of a growing and healthy company. Because while I agree there are a lot of bloated jobs. Even bloated jobs can still serve a purpose. Let's use a cashier as an example. You may only need 4 cashiers. But having 6 takes more stress off the other cashiers. And the customer doesn't have to wait as long. Which could lead to both happier employees and customers. And a happy customer is more likely to be a return customer. While a happy employee is more likely to work harder. The only time a company should really worry about bloated jobs is when they are losing money. This kind of behavior is especially obvious in video games companies. Where lay offs happen all the time. Even when the company is making record profits.
@crediblesalamander80562 ай бұрын
i think it's actually both. you overhire because you want to show that the company is growing for the shareholders. then, when it becomes obvious it's a bubble, you do mass layoffs to show how fiscally responsible you are, also for the shareholders. it's almost completely disassociated from the quality of the products and services being produced or how well they're selling.

I haved mixed feelings on non-teacher hiring in public education. I think some of the roles are really important, like having more aides for students with atypical learning needs, etc. Also think some growth in administration is necessary to deal with parents being nuts, post-Columbine expectations placed on schools, and all the weird requirements of legislation like NCLB, etc.. 88% feels wild, though. I never understood what half of the administrators at my school did.

I think there's plenty of reasons why going in to work improves my experience over WFH. - There's a more distinct separation between work and home. - I'm more productive in a group environment, which also makes me feel better about myself. Being less productive at home is nice for the brainrot part of my brain, but in the end you feel worse overall - Loneliness is an aspect too, I'm lucky to enjoy being around my coworkers. If I hated everyone then that might be different. - I don't need to dedicate a room or area in my home to my job - I kind of enjoy being out and about in the world (if I was in a hectic city that might be less true lol)

When I first started dating my partner, she had a relatively cushy developer job that offered unlimited time off, and the company was actually very respectful about it. She had projects and deadlines, but it wasn't overbearing and she would very regularly take time off and never got even the slightest reprimand for it. At the end of her first year there iirc she had taken around 100 days off? Obviously she was only able to do this because she was very efficient at her job and the workload wasn't demanding, but still. 100 days off and a near 6 figure salary with like 3 years of experience in that career track blew my mind. She swapped employers and now works for a different company that also offers unlimited time off, but she can't get away with it quite as easily anymore hah. Seeing this career development of hers is why I'm back in school now. Fuck what I was doing before gimme that 100 days off and a 6 figure salary yessir

Since stopping my drinking habits i've very slowly gone back to being unable to stomach some of the more intense ones i used to like. As my brother likes to say: I don't like the taste, I like what it does to me. Occasional drinks are quite enjoyable, i think once you kinda get used to getting really drunk a nice buzz every once in a while is quite enjoyable and doesn't make you feel like crap for drinking a ton, nowadays I might drink a few seltzers a month and that's enough for me to enjoy drinking without hating how I feel morally or physically.
