I believe Tyler is talking to God, as he does in a number of songs. Here, he's struggling to find his way through tough times (Depression, anxiety, addiction, any and all), and he uses his pen to write his music. He needs his music to escape, but is looking for guidance from above. When one loses that grounding connection to their faith, it is a feeling of being alone and lost (the desert). I have been there. Like Tyler, I grew up in a Christian family. For me, though, I lost five members of my immediate family in a couple of years, My father-in-law, then my brother, and then my mom in just a four month span. Then, the following year, we lost my mother-in-law and my uncle. My faith had been shaken to its core. This song had a much deeper meaning for me after going through these last two and a half years. When you have been there, the power of the music is tenfold. I think we can all relate to the music of Twenty One Pilots, because the journey of life has its twists and turns. We all have times we need guidance, and suffer from times of depression. I also think we all question our faith, or lives, and need to refresh (wash me with your water).

I really appreciate hearing someone's thoughts about the poetic lyricism in their songs. I've been a fan of 21 | Pilots for years, and the poetry hits as hard as the beats. I enjoy the language you use discussing Tyler's writing, and the respect you share with us about Tyler as an artist. I'm about to go check out more of your videos! Cheers.

The live version is so emotional I would love to see you react to it, I see this song as a song to god, he’s lost sight of where god is and he is desperate for any sign of him

This song is so powerful, and I love it so much! I'm so glad you liked it! For context: Tyler grew up in a pretty traditional Christian household, but found that he started questioning his faith as he grew older, which is a theme that pops up all the time in his lyrics. This song is Tyler talking to God, saying he wishes he were a better "son", and looking for any sign that God is listening... This section of the concert is lovely, and I can't wait for you to hear the rest of it!

Would love it if you also do the UG Studios one as well Sonic. It hits differently stripped down and quite touching to see how emotional it makes Tyler. This song may be the most heartfelt prayer I’ve ever heard.

He's talking to God, struggling with his faith due to his circumstances. Same message he's usually starting at. It's easier for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle then it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom. This is his struggle.. He's trying to do God's work by preaching a message, but he's become a NICO (icon) and he feels he's failed at this work.. Tyler created his own language to do this. Cars are his life heading in a direction, usually north or south. Sleep is not paying attention to God. Awake is faith. Right.. So, the desert is a biblical reference to the places where God or life wont go. So, he's saying that he goes in to Godless thoughts (deserts in his mind) and can't find any God there.. No water. No life.. But he goes there too often because of his life path thru the very worldly music industry. Ultimately, he's stuck in a spiritual Catch 22, pleading with God to forgive him, but also, staying there so he can continue to write us music with this message in tact... Tyler is a Warrior...... In an Army that most can't comprehend. But you have to speak his language to hear it.
