As someone who isn't religious/doesn't believe in God, I find the fact Tyler is able to produce lyrics that mean so much to different people amazing. When I listen to his lyrics I draw comparisons to my own mental illness. He leaves the interpretation up to the listener/skeleton clique, but there's definitely ties to his religion without a doubt. If you've not already had these suggested: Guns for Hands Kitchen Sink Holding on to You Goner

Well I myself believe in God but I completely agree he really does an amazing job allowing for the person listening to draw what they need individually from his lyrics it's really incredible.

Right, their is the intended meaning he has for himself but is intelligent and skilled enough to allow it to mean something completely different for someone else. It's incredible. I'll check those out!

It’s so cool seeing someone who is able to pick up on the religious connotations bc a lot of their lyrics centralise around that and presents the meaning as so much more personal. You should for sure react to their holding onto you music video :)

The song is Ode To Sleep. You’re pretty much in line with what most of people believe this song to mean. Like he’s desperate not to lose his grip of what little is left of his connection to god. Tyler also looks up when singing, “and I’ll be holding on to you” in the mv Holding On To You. Josh looks like he wants to get through the song and just give Tyler a big hug. I can’t watch this video without feeling heartbroken and I also want to jump in and hug him. 💔😭

A good chunk of Tyler's early songs, like this one, are quite dark and talk about his struggles with his faith and mental instability. Watch enough of their early video's and performances and such and you can tell he wasn't in the best of head spaces and would sometimes breakdown mid performance. Not that he couldn't continue or like breakdown like a stereotypical rock star would, but his emotions would just let loose and he would often cry while singing. You see him fighting it here. Watching his and Josh's emotional performances evolve over the years is quite fascinating. And I love that they just let it happen and don't stifle that aspect of their art.

you're doing a hell of a job on these Tyler's writing is very tricky because it's extremely descriptive but also buried in metaphors - so i think there are a million right answers as to what each song means to each person - they all mean something specific to Tyler, but he would never tell anyone their interpretation is wrong You also picked up on another theme in a lot of their songs - waking up feeling fine and then throughout the day your mental state can deteriorate (you were thinking of Ode to Sleep)

This song always makes me feel like I’m intruding on a very private and emotional moment. My heart aches for him. It’s so raw. I cry watching this performance. Great job deciphering Tyler code so quickly! He’s a musical and lyrical genius with a beautiful brain and heart (and yes face). 😁

Great review, interpretation, breakdown, and references to other songs. So emotional 😢 Tyler is a genius song writer and musician, and both he and Josh have a strong faith based background. There are so many more incredible songs and albums from Tyler and Josh. Tyler Joseph No Phun Intended, Twenty One Pilots Self Titled, Regional At Best, Vessel, Blurryface, Trench, and all their singles, live shows, reimagining, sleepers, tour, behind the scenes, and all the covers of other artists songs, and also their early days faith church band.

Old song for them. You can tell they were young and not fully polished yet...but greatness has always been there. For Tyler to create all this in his basement without any training...sheesh. Self taught and pumping out radio hits without some slick dude controlling the puppet strings. I have mad respect that he made this happen by hard work.

I've always thought the water was a metaphor for that in which keeps you alive. We need water to live. I've always believed he's trying to say he's running through the deserts (the harsh parts of his mind where there is a lack of all things, possibly faith, and he is disillusioned and struggling to survive) trying to hold in to the water (the thing that keeps him alive) but its a futile effort. In all of this hes struggling and often sees no drop of life, God or reason to live in the vast landscape of his mind. He's begging for a sign, a reason, a life line. Its such an emotional song. I feel it to the core. One of my favorites because it touchs the soul.

This is a very old song. I don't know as much as others do about it. But I think he was a teenager when he wrote it, so the current music writing and producing tendencies had not been started yet.

(*maybe add this one to the TØP playlist). He speaks of water in A Car, a Torch, a Death, too. Still react to the produced song to compare this one to that one. He’s always emotional, and when you see him twitch, shake his head, etc., he’s trying to control his emotions and stopping himself from crying…

I think a lot of people gloss over the line "And the waves of the water mean nothing to me". And it's just such a stab in the gut because it means (at least to me) the very thing he's fighting and struggling to keep a hold of is plentiful. It's there, in waves, but he's so focused on the little bit that's draining through his hands that he doesn't even acknowledge it as an option as he self-destructs. And who knows, it's probably not even within reach to begin with. Wither this is a song about faith, happiness, or coping mechanisms it just captures that desperation and frustration in trying so hard to just be ok, but it's not an option for you even when it's seemingly within reach.

I don't think I've ever had a band I love me cry so much. This song always gets me. I take the water as the amount of "life"he has left, his suicidal thoughts have drained it. He needs God to keep him going, but he's not been a good son, so his water is low and he is begging God to give him more strength.

The amazing thing about this song is that it's all 3 avenues at the same time. The listener can equate it however they feel, and it can be different every time. This performance is so gut wrenching to watch, he bares his soul, his struggle. So many people can relate to that, especially when they're honest with themselves. This one brings me to tears every time, such a heavy moment. But the hope is in the knowledge that we don't stay there forever. |-/

My interpretation: He’s actually at a beach, but in his mind it might as well be a desert. “The waves of the water mean nothing to me.” I’m imagining a small child on the beach and needing water to build a sandcastle (a metaphor for his life) because the sand is too dry, but he can’t seem to carry enough of it close to his sandcastle. Metaphorically, his depression keeps him from thinking to use a bucket or build closer to the water (God). He thinks he can hold it together himself, but it just drips through. I could go a lot deeper but I’ll just stop there.

@@SuffiReax I watch several peoples' reaction videos now and love them all including yours. Fable does Instagram TV, others do Vimeo, Etc. It's sad how this works really, I don't think that I have posted this on your channel yet so here it is again: What Fueled by Ramen did is terrible. When TØP signed, they already had their self titled album and Regional at Best. FBR made them surrender the rights to RAB and tried to take self titled as well but there were other band members that Josh replaced so they couldn't. FBR then had them release Vessel but it has many of the same songs as RAB, just modified to varying degrees (check out the RAB version of Trees with the vocodered vocals), so FBR un-released RAB and disavowed it. Lane Boy is at least partially about their struggle with FBR, i'm puzzled as to how that song was even allowed to be on an album/see the light of day. Anyway, what this all leads to is be prepared for the copyright claims and takedowns. If you go to Fable's channel and load his list of videos you can search on the page for Twenty One Pilots and see which ones he had that were blocked because they will only be a minute or 2 in length because they aren't the actual reaction, just a link to his Instagram. As an example, Kitchen Sink.

Oh wow, that is awful :/ I had no clue any of that happened to them, thank you for the backstory. Yes I have already had to deal with a few blocks, though so far disputing it has worked everytime and it is allowed to be viewed again. I am worried about the day that a dispute is not approved though and they take it down anyways, then I won't quite know what to do cause i've got no clue how to work instagram tv lol but thank you for the heads up.

Yeah, you are as close as you can be with your breakdown. There are recurring themes in Tyler's lyric, and two of them are the struggles with depression and god. But he hides them behind so many metaphors that it allows you to interpret it in so many ways, and all will be correct. He also gets emotional from time to time depending on the songs, which is something that happened in this presentation. You might notice him do rapid shakes with his head and his body to avoid breaking down. He really feels the music and the lyrics. Also, this song belongs to the self titled (first album), so you will not find that pop sound in their songs yet. This album has more of a raw sound accompanied by heavily charged emotional lyrics.

@@SuffiReax I hope he did. He probably did. There's so much support between those two. If you wanna see another VERY emotional song/presentation by them, do a reaction for Goner. They have an official video in their channel (which is just 2 minutes long), but the live presentation at the Fox Theater it's just one of the best ever. I would suggest you to do both reactions in the same video, but if you decide to do just one, do the one for the live presentation.
