What IS the greatest car in the world? Could Mitsubishi have found the answer in the Evolution? The crazy TFL team are about to find out!
When we say 'the greatest car in the world' we of course mean the greatest 'all-round' car in the world and the TFL boys are about to embark on one of the funniest tests of the series...
But IF the Evo is the greatest 'all-round' car in the world then which version of the car is best?

I know some idiots say GTR is better than Evo, but u can buy 3 Evos with a price of one GTR. I know GTR is fast as hell but, why would u wanna spend that much on a car that looks like an Altima? Pound for pound and $ for $, Evo's gotta be the most fun car to drive.

That is my Evo X, my actual car, fing mitsu sold it to me as one careful owner and since i've seen this and read magazine reviews of it being ragged on gravel. i've sold it now, bug mitsubishi should be ashamed of themselves.

paid attention to every detail...except for the CMC being plastic, drive pulley/belt that may snap off, ACD\AYC pump that fails due to corrosion and cold temp and timing chain on the X...

Learn how to drive fast, then put yourself behind the wheel of an Evo. Very few cars under 100,000 that can match it. As far as modifications go, they only get better with more power. 232,000 miles on mine and still going strong.

The euro evos are the top of the top. Those FQ evos are no joke we've gotta put a bit of money into ours before we get there. I mean mines as fast as the fq360 now but it took mods to think I could of had that stock over there is ridiculous.

Thanks once again for all your comments, please keep them coming. It's great to see so many views and we do have a great fondness for the Boxer engine in the Impreza. It's also a valid point that the M3 is a great package that sounds awesome. Of course there can never really be such a thing as 'the greatest car in the world', but we still feel that the Evo comes pretty close and outshines the competition. Even in some cases this is by a small margin.

What i dont understand is that the front bumper looks different on alot of evo 10's , and some have those downforce teeth the evo 9 has on the roof and some don't , does anyone know what the difference is ? Different build year ? Different version ?

In this case, I can't remember the exact track, but I believe it was originally sourced from the royaltyfreemusic website. @bnigd29892 It's mud that splashed in through the window on the rally track (Although we did have a particularly rampant cameraman on that series, so you could be right). : )

Ive got a 57reg IX FQ360 myself after coming from a 55reg Subaru STI. Its took me a LONG time to fall in love with the Evo like i did with my Subaru.The Sub was brilliant handaling but with Yoko A048 tyres on the Evos better & is quicker off the mark with less lag.However the Evo needs lots more TLC than the Sub & parts cost loads more.The Sub was the better 'all rounder' but if you want to go out for an hour & kick everyones ass then the Evos the car to have.Will be trading it for a X in 2013.

It looks so much like my car, including the wing which is great for control over 70mph. .... but first I need brakes that can keep up with the acceleration....as in a limited slip diff that works as well slowing downhill as it does speeding uphill.

Forever stuck trying to decide to buying an 8,9 or a 10... 8 and 9s cost the same/ more than a nice 10 for a clean low mileage one but they look so much better imo. Also I think the evo 8 and 9s can't really go down too much more in price, I think they're going to actually go up soon enough. Anyone care to help?

I think the title of "Ultimate all-rounder" should go to something like an Audi A4 with a 3.0 TDI. It's a mid sized 4-door with an estate option. While it's not as quick as an EVO, a 0 to 60 of around 6 seconds is still pretty good, and the engine makes a lot more power down low in the revs. The fuel mileage is WAY better, the maintenance schedule is longer, and the ride is a lot nicer. The only downer is that it cost a lot more. But still....

the only thing that sucks about the evo x is that that if you decide to drive it in the winter then you need to replace your AYC pump every year and at dealership price they are $3200

Evo 5,6,6TME (CP9A) have the best performance, look the most aggressive (flared wheel arches) and look the best (subjective). The new ones 7 - 10 have worse performance but better comfort and IMO don't look as good.

At their own price range, the Evo is definitely the best car of their nature. Amazing clutch, high acceleration and just love the sounds of the engine!! Had an 06, best car I've ever driven.

I think the greatest cars are Mitsubishi IX, Subaru Impreza WRX STI 2011, Subaru Impreza ESX and Nissan GT-R35 V-Spec! All four are great cars :D

Ive owned my Evo IX FQ360 for almost 4 years now.Had two brand new STI's before that.The 55reg with active dif was a mega car & i would recomend one to anyone.0-60 theres a blink of an eye in it but Evo has less lag.However Evos handaling is on another planet compared to the STI,nothing can touch it.Subs are more comfortable & prices for parts such as clutch much cheaper.But if you want to go out for an hour & destroy everything on the road the Evos the better car!! Getting a X soon!!!

Then there's the running costs. In the UK petrol is currently around £1.40 per litre, which translates to over $8.00 per gallon. So, much to our dismay, for this European test we were asked not to consider anything above 3.0. On the upside however, we're told that, as there is no official CO2 rating for an imported Mustang, the UK Road Tax for 12 months is £215 ($336), rather than £475 ($743) for a 5.0 Range Rover. Great news if you can import one at the right price!

We'd love to do a big test with some real American Muscle cars at some point and we agree that if we'd been conducting this test in the US there may possibly have been a different outcome. The sad truth is that if we were to walk into a Ford dealership in the UK this afternoon, we wouldn't be able to order a Mustang. You need to find specialist importers and there are warranty issues, which we think is ridiculous!

The Evo X is a great car, until it starts falling to bits, as mine is doing after only two years and 21,000 miles. Currently requires a new SST gearbox, AYC pump, brake discs and wheels, all under warranty. Mitsu really cost cut the X and I wouldn't buy another one, sadly, as it's tremendous to drive when it works....but that's not often.

I own an Evo 7, but hands down I would take the Evo 9 over the X... but they're both amazing cars. The X is more of a refined monster, but it just looks too much like the Lancer, there is no confusing an Evo 9 with the Lancer. It definitely looks like an Evo.

jrcu19 I've seen too many Evo X's that have actually just been Lancers that want to look like Evo X's to the point where I can't tell the difference anymore. Much like the WRX, the Evo looks like it's tamed the styling down... even the STi has that wonky looking wing to set it apart from the WRX, although a WRX owner can just as easily add it on their car and claim it's an STI.. jrcu19 eh I still think the Evo X looks more toned down than it has in the past. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to opinion. The same applies to the STi...they look much more tame and family car-esque than before. That's just my thoughts on the matter.
