I transcribed the last answer (it's at 23:07 - don't read if you haven't watched): -- Well, there's something that comes before being in the right headspace and you have to make sure that you're prepared to manage whatever inspiration comes your way. So, before inspiration strikes you have to work hard. You have to make sure that when you're doing writing exercises or when you're forcing yourself to work on a certain production element, or get better at an instrument, or... There's a lot of things that aren't necessarily fueled by inspiration that you have to work on, so that you have the skill when it happens. So, a lot of times... I always talk about... song writing is kind of like being a muscle, that you have to work out, that you have to get stronger, have to tear down and build back up. And, so it's not... I'm not walking around all day long inspired. You know, there's times where you have to do what you don't feel like doing. And when... Even though I don't feel like writing songs, it's what I love to do, right, so... Those things can be disconnected sometimes and that's okay. So then, once you're at that point where you have the skill, you've worked on your craft, when that inspiration happens you're ready for it. Specifically with lyrics it'll be an interaction with someone, it'll be a word, it'll be a sound, it'll be a certain thought, something you saw. You can't anticipate it, it'll just happen and you gotta be ready. I think what I try to do with lyrics is... What's this thing that I've felt that I've always had, I've always felt, I've never been able to explain it to anyone. How can I explain it but in a way I've never heard it explained before. How can I... This thing that I'm working through, how can I put a different word to it, a different angle, a new angle. Seeing a problem that's been around for my whole life from a different angle almost gives me a sense of control over that problem. And with lyrics you can say things new, in a different way, and I think at that point someone can take those lyrics and go "you know what, I know what you're talking about, even though I've not heard it said like that", and then it gives them a sense of control over that thing as well. And I think that's kind of what has happened with us... is that songwriting, I've realized, is trying to look at the same problem I've had for a long time from a different angle and if I can continue to circle around it and see it from every possible angle, the more understanding I have of that problem. And I guess in a sense you guys who make the music your own are kind of seeing it from my angle with me and we're kind of trying to solve it together.

JD here .....timeless interview...I'm an old (54 this month), but proud to say that these guys have musically affected me for the good....my daughter, Arianna, got me more focused on these guys (always loved Tyler's rapping, but never got too deep listening to them) and am thankful that she did....I hope they keep making music til they're my current age (or longer).....I truly do think that they are a genuine inspiration to a vast array of humans (and banditos)....Arianna and I get to see them for a second time in Dallas later this summer and cannot wait, and also know that I'm that much closer to the end of that gig, which makes me a little sad at the same time.....I would love to take her up to see one of their hometown shows....I know that would be unreal....Peace to you guys and a good bit of freedom and distance from those anxieties that debilitate you the most..

i love that Tyler gives a backstory to his situation/answer. He could have easily just said one person that he admired musically when he was 12, but he let us into his life and gave us this backstory, and a glimpse into how he became who he is today, and i just absolutely love that and am thankful. Yes that’s something I practice - looking at situations from multiple angles, from multiple perspectives, in order to gain control of it. It is the act of separation. When you can see that you are separate from a thing, it no longer devours you. You don’t say “I am depressed”. In a way I feel what Josh talked about. Whenever I look at someone for for than 2 seconds..... I have the urge to immediately look down or someplace else. Especially in class when a faculty is teaching..... I look at them until they look at me. When that happens.... I try to look away in the most discreet way possible so they don't mistake me as me avoiding their lecture .
