As many have suggested, pull the serpentine belt off so you can actually hear just the engine run. My bet is probably 90% of the sound you're hearing is the AC compressor. After you get that done I would go through the typical stages of testing the engine from top to bottom. Do a compression test. Pull the upper plenum of the intake manifold off. Pull the valve covers off and check the rockers. There are a lot of things that you can do to test the engine to see if it's even necessary to pull it out of the car. Don't just jump the gun and assume you're going to have to pull the motor. Learn as much as you can about diagnosing an engine and you could save yourself a lot of money in the long run.

Between the clicking sounds and chirping sound, I would take the belt off then run it again. Just to eliminate any noises from the belt accessories.

At least *some* of that noise is coming from one or more of the pulleys. Costs $0 and 5 minutes of time to pull the belt off the tensioner for 30 seconds and see if there's a difference. I love ruling things out by process of elimination.

I have a 1991 Camaro RS. I love these cars. I bought mine brand new July of 1991. For your battery terminal issue, I used a coarse nut and bolt on each one. I use the nut as a lock nut to ensure a good connection plus the head of the bolt makes a good post for charging or jumping off the battery. Just my 2 cents. I look forward to seeing more progress on the Third Gen!

Make sure you change the lifters too. I heard one tapping bad. The ticking you heard is probably the rocker arm is loose from a collapsed lifter. Check all the rods for being straight.

The noise definitely sounds like worn or spun bearings, camshaft is probably worn-out/rounded, and the valve lifters sounded like they were clicking or ticking. These are usually the top three reason for shavings in the oil in Third Gen. Camaro 305 small block. The crankshaft is probably starved for oil or has a plugged channel which why former owner overfilled it. On the plus side, it is a great opportunity for Declan to learn...a little at a time and Chevrolet is relatively straight forward, easy, affordable to work on. Unlike European cars, you'll never lack parts or suppliers. Subscribed.

It sounds like something is making noise as it's rotating. I would remove the serpentine belt and run the engine again. There is a possibility that one of the following; smog pump, p/s pump, a/c compressor, water pump, alternator is locked up or the bearings are bad. The car will start and run on off the battery alone for at least 1/2 hour. The glitter in the oil pan and filter may have come from the factory timing chain hitting the timing chain cover and gouging out metal as its rubbing and rotating> ?

Yeah it sounds rough but hey you guys scored you cannot find them like that anymore . It's most likely turned a bearing but I would make sure that the torque converter is tight and the flex plate is not cracked or shattered. To me it does sound like it's got some noise coming from the flexplate. You don't have anything to lose by checking that's for sure. I've seen those flexplates crack where the 6 bolts fasten them to the crankshaft. If you pull the converter bolts out of it and slide it back as far as you can you might be able to see up in there possibly if not I would get one of those camera attachments that go on your phone with a 90° camera on it so you can see what it looks like

Before you pull the whole engine run some detergent oil though the engine with some Rislone and Lucas oil mixed in. You might just have a stuck hydraulic lifter, I had this happen in my Camaro years ago. I ran that thought it and then used Royal Purple and the lifter noise went away.

Eh, can’t really hear good compared to being there in person but, I would pull the serpentine belt off and have a listen and another problem area with those Z’s is the flex plate. Remove the belt and try again just out of curiosity, BUT as soon as I heard this engine run I was immediately thinking it has spun the main bearings and will for sure need a rebuild. I can hear the exhaust and A/C making noise as well but this is very familiar to me. I've owned 2 of these cars and one of them had this same result. My opinion is to get a remanufactured engine and give that one as a core, or find a good donor car with a good engine if funds are an issue. Although a sad situation, your son will definitely learn a lot.

Chevrolet offered the IROC-Z trim model of the Z/28 from 1985 to 1990, its badge nodding to the International Race of Champions series that sprang from the brain of Roger Penske to become a fixture on ABC's Wide World of Sports. So the "Z" stands for Z-28 so you were correct in your original statement. Don't listen to all the keyboard warriors out there.

The iroc z became a model in 1988 on thru 90…before it WAS a trim on the z28…if you look in the console on the spid sticker on any 85-87’ it will say z28 with the rpo codes…1988 it became the model and the z28 was dropped till it was resurrected in 1991 when Chevy didn’t renew the iroc contract…all 1990 irocs were built from august 89’ till December 31st 1989 and were done…they retooled the plant a bit and the 1991 z28 came out early in April 1990…this is why there are so many 91’s..they were built from 4-90 till July 91’ ..August of 91’ started the. 1992 builds till august of 92’ and the plant in van nuys ca was closed.

Agreed they are horrible on the paint. Had a few on my late 1980s TAs back in the day. By the same right if you had front end scratches, paint peeling or worse they could hide the damage. As far as heat that wasn't a problem with having one that I ever recall. The LeBra was the higher end brand to have and had ventilation built in if needed for other models. Wasn't necessary on a TA though. You did get individual headlight covers for the flip up headlights that usually rubbed and came off eventually.

From the oil change last video, you have either a spun bearing on the crank or a cam bearing is wiped out... It now comes down to your budget, to rebuild or replace with a 350, you should be able to find a good motor on marketplace for a decent price... I wouldn't go back with a 305.. Back in the 90's when I had my 3rd gen I swapped the tired 350 tpi with a build 383 stroker from a monte carlo that a guy crash out running the cops... I didn't have any of the build spec's of the internals but I tell that engine had some hp's behind it, the car got stolen and the guy was toying with a detective going down the highway and it turned into a hot pursuit and they caught him with spike strips and he ditched the car tearing the front end up.. Sorry I got caught up in the moment there lol... Anyways good luck with pulling the engine..
