Back in 1994 I learned how to drive in my mom's 1986 IROC-Z. They aren't the fastest cars on Earth but they drive like silk. Looks beautiful and drives just as beautiful. When they had basic maintenance kept up with they'd last for years.

I had a Red 1990 Trans Am with T-Tops. I absolutely loved that car! One of my favorites, if not the favorite I’ve had! Was my first real muscle car. Though it only had the gutless 5.0, at least it was a TPI car and I loved it!!! I would give almost anything to have that exact car back, and I’ve looked several times over the years, and I’m pretty sure it ended up in the crusher:( I’m curious, is yours a 5.0 or a 5.7 car?

@@teamgmotorsports The 68 had a 350. Loads of guts and it revved up to 6500 without a problem. I only wish it was stick. Sold it to a dear friend and he sends me pictures from time to time. I owned a 1984 Camaro that I bought new. I had the car until 1992 when I sold it. Overall we really like the car. Our car was light blue (I think they called it Cadet Blue at the time). After about 5 years the primer coat started to disintegrate which caused the top coat to come off in sheets. The primer had actually turned to powder and lost all adhesion to both the metal as well as the paint. The only cure would have been to bring the car back down to bare metal and start over. On some cars GM stepped up and admitted they had a problem but not in my case.

If the engine is hurt and it's a 305, either switch it up to a 350 or a 383 Crate engine ... OR ... consider a used 5.3 LS out of a truck. The used 5.3 will run better, be cheaper and give you more room under the hood to work on it. Plenty of companies sell the parts to LS swap these cars. When done correctly, an LS swap is the way to go.

Awesome video! Reminds me of my first car and my dad helping me getting it set up right. Was a smogged out 81 Z28 with a 350. Not much horsepower but the torque made it fun. The junkyards were a treasure trove for anything we needed to replace like those smelly seats you guys were talking about. It’s been a long time since then but I’m actually fixing up an 87 Formula for me and my son to cruise in and I found a junk yard that still has tons of third gen F body parts he stashed away. So they are still out there if you guys feel like doing a little hunting.

Back in 1994, I almost bought an 88 IROC in a dark grey that was in mint condition, but the fellow wouldn't budge off of 8 grand, which I didn't have. My dad brought me back to reality when he said I would most likely have to park it in the winter (I'm from around Vancouver, BC, and winters were several feet of snow for months back then). I landed up getting a 1990 Chevy Beretta. It was nice and essentially a snowmobile, but I always regretted not getting the IROC.

Looking really good!! FYI if you get natural lump charcoal it plus baking soda will absorb odors so well it’s amazing. Really charcoal not the pressed wood chip stuff the old stuff that people use to smoke meat that is just wood burned in a low oxygen environment. Also this is really cool if your overflow and windshield reservoir are not brittle empty them out and use Oxi-clean mixed in water and seal it where you can fill without air bubbles and then sink them in a container with more Oxi-clean water. DO NOT put the black cap in the mix that’s a hard lesson learned for me.

Friendly tip, while you have the interior gutted, cut out an access panel on the rear deck for an easier fuel pump replacement in the future. The new carpet will cover it up. Purists will tell you not to do it, but I think with a driver car and not an immaculate show car, it’s the right choice. Great car, love the father and son project.

Just no, it's lazy and what's the kiddo learn? How to hack up a car and cover it up versus learning to fix it the correct way. Just my opinion, plenty have of course done it your way. I've always chosen the right way and had to do maybe 8-10 over the years.

Solid start. Take care when editing the video that voice and music are about the same level, if voice is too low viewers turn up the volume, then get blasted with music. Also not a priority item, but sun-faded seatbelts are likely to snap in a crash, providing minimal or no protection. They should be replaced when you start taking the car places rather than around the block. Subscribed.

I also had a bra on the car (still have it in the garage), but mine was the same maroon color as the car so it blends in with the car. My wife and a friend "overhauled" me by stealing the car and getting repainted for my 51st birthday because of the clearcoat issue.

The passenger fender bowed out is from someone lifting the car on the lower fender mount thinking it is a pinch weld. Have to lift it on the subframe rails. Have to straighten the mount and it will pull the bow out. Also seats from a 4th gen bolt in, easy fix for the seats 99-2002. The rear seats are a little narrower across the back, but bolt in.

The passenger fender bowing out like that is from someone jacking on the pinch weld. The bottom bolt for the fender goes through the pinch weld and it's really common for that to be jacked on and folded over on these. You can bend it back straight with some pliers, and if it's really bad it can be hammer and dollied.

Drop the oil pan first to clean out the sludge and then fill with fresh oil and engine flush . Put some atf and oil in each cylinder through the spark plug port and let it soak for a few days . Then do test the engine to see if it is seized and if moves then try to turn it over . This is probably the most important step in n restoration of an engine. Good luck!!!!

I bought a small ozone generator from Amazon a few years ago - works great on really disgusting interiors.

Nice job with the video. I had that car too. Check the rear shock towers, they like to crack.

Had a 89 IROC with the optional 5.7 had set of bilsteins and Kenny Brown welded in half roll cage and it was bone stock with borla exhaust . The way it was geared it was quick for the time period. A 16 year old girl ran a stop sign and totaled it back in 2004 . It was a sad day. car was repainted black by dealer because of clear coat recall. The gap on the fenders is from shops not lifting the car correctly.

You should get yourself a steam cleaner, that would help a lot for the interior

The power washer nozzle that close to the paint made me furious 😂 surprised it didn't chip it all off

Well, in truth, we were trying to wash off the flaking clear coat. I've learned that the trick with power washers is to use the right sized one for the job. I use the little electric one for cleaning cars just because it's low powered and has a pretty diffused nozzle. Not powerful enough to harm good paint. The gas powered one is reserved for more damaging work!

I love it I have a 91 I've restored with a 650hp stroked small block and another thing I noticed is that's a hardtop car so it's a 5.7 and not the 5.0

If it was a 5.7 the badges would say 5.7. It's a 5.0

@Carl_Jr yeah i was hoping for you because that year you couldn't get a 5.7 with ttops so I was very hopeful it was a 5.7 but it's OK that 5.0 will be just fine for your boy

Scented dryer sheets stuck inside the seat itself will help with the smell and deter future infestation. Mice love heater boxes and duct work.

Are you sure it's your sons car? Just saying. 😂 Have the best of times doing this with him. You both deserve to have good moments together and you will cherish those moments forever. Car is fabulous by the way. By the way, these were built in Ste-therese, Quebec about 10 minutes from my house. Plant closed a longtime ago and it was quite a tragedy for us. But hey, back to the car.

These were not built in Canada, that’s the 4 th gens 93-02’ these were built in Norwood Ohio till 87’ when the plant closed and were built in van nuys CA at same time and became the main building plant once Norwood closed in 87’ last American built Camaro till 92’ and then van nuys closed…cool video on KZbin called the last 3rd gen , guy ordered a 92 z28 and got to walk the line with it being built and had everyone sign their name all over car as it was going down the line.
