It's nothing new, really - but it's a good stove to have for camping, or for any kind of grid down scenario. If you have stuff available that can burn, you have a stove you can use to purify water or prepare meals. I have a lot of stoves, and this is one of my favorites - the Biolite Campstove 2.

Haha so to clear up some confusion on that little beef statement. I'm not going vegan, I'm not anti farmers (local farms are awesome), I'm not even anti beef. I do however think solar panels are good, and they are a solid prep item. I'm also not an expert and am certainly not trying to convince anyone to do anything a certain way. I don't think cows are bad, or even that beef is inherently bad for you (though you could argue the linkage to cancer I suppose) - I wasn't talking about that. I don't think cow farts will cause the ozone layer to be destroyed and for my face to be melted off by the sun tomorrow. I'm not a PETA person - but humane and sustainable farming would certainly be my preference. I'm very pro hunting, but I'll be honest, the mistreatment of animals in farming does bug me a bit. Having raised animals (chickens, dogs, various other house pets, I'm not a farmer or anything), maybe I've grown a soft spot for the humane treatment of animals. Birds and fish are legitimately dumb though, so while I do buy free range eggs, I feel less bad for them. It takes a TON of farmed vegetables/grains to feed cows. Most cows aren't walking around eating grass - I'm not sure if people are confused about that or something, maybe they are. I'm not a vegan, probably won't ever be - but based purely on efficient use of resources, a vegan diet certainly is more efficient, you literally can't argue that - like, you can't. Overall, the world has too many people. We don't have the money, space, or resources to 'grow' cows the proper way. If you buy beef from local farmers who are using sustainable practices - awesome. If you have an opinion, even if you have some research to back up your opinion, that's awesome. I've researched both sides, there are arguments to both sides, there's a lot of false info out there, there are a lot of scare tactics, etc. Like, I get it... I'm not dumb. I'm not trying to school anyone - if anything I encourage you simply to research (everything) and that's all. You do you.

Small farms are going out of business by an alarming rate. Big corp has made it it very hard to sell our animal to the public. Thank you big Corp, And as for cows they eat grass. Grain is Not normal cow food in fact they won't eat it in till you force them. When an baby cow is weaned at 6 months it is sold majority bought by big feed lots owned by big corp they raise them with steroids to grow fast so they can finish them in feed lots with corn mesh and hay, chicken poop etc to gain weight fast tbh butcher from 12 months up. So back to small farmer now most out of business raise cattle sheep goats pigs on hay and pasture normal food some will finish an beef on corn or oats for 100 days to get the nice day called marble. But corp wants you to think we are over population its not true, control the food control the world, ever hear of the georgia guide stones? We have plenty of grass lands for cattle for everyone. And big corp has destroyed farm land with so many chemicals that majority vegetable grown are nutritional deficient not to go into GMOs. Point is don't !st big corp tell you what to think go visit small farms let them tell you about the raids from FBI because they sell raw milk or grass feed finished beef, many true honest farmers out of business. Plenty of beef and not over population all lies
@LastLineOfDefense

I think we're on the same page... Big farms = bad, small farms (if they're doing things right) = good. I'm not sure where you pull your statistics about 'overpopulation is a lie' - but there is obviously a very wide and arguable range of what could be considered overpopulated. If a populace does not have the economic means to sustainably support themselves - then I'd probably deem that to be overpopulation. But that definition is purely my opinion.

They corn siledge, hay, and grains. That is what they eat because if you give a cow just corn. They become unhealthy, don't put on weight, and die. It is a misconception on what is used for food production. We raised steers when I was younger and what you hear about antibiotics, grains being used for feed, etc. Is a hot mess of garbage. If it they didn't have a nutrient rich diet they wouldn't get as big as they do. That is why grass fed beef is a rip off because you pay for less and the quality isn't that good, IE super gamey. The problem is that the USDA manipulates pricing to keep prices low, along with the FDA. Local farmers would be every where. Shit we would all have gardens but government keeps us in a way so we need the supply lines of trucks.

As for taking a break from beef.... hey eat what you want and if that is a turkey burger or hotdog then all the power to you. Personally... I like to mix it up. Boil it with broth or bullion or even pull that ramen seasoning pack. Always wondered if biolite was worth the buy. Thanks

I found having to constantly feed the biolite 2 with twigs etc a massive ball ache. And then I realised a trangia spirit burner is the exact diameter and sits in the biolite 2 perfectly. Just sit back and watch that beautiful flaming vortex it's hypnotic and no more smoking out the mountainside and constant snapping up little bits of wood and shoving it all in. You'll get about 20 min burn with one full trangia and I've made a simple device to refill it in situ with a metal straw to feed in meths. Of you try it you'll never use wood again, infact I'm sure the two items were actually made for eachother. A marriage made in Devon

Ketchup AND mustard; one of each. If no ketchup, I'll use relish. I actually prefer mayonnaise as a primer before adding anything else, and chili dogs are a favorite -- eat 'em with a fork. Sometimes onions and horseradish. Question for you Mike; I have a first-generation Campstove and am tempted to get the Campstove2+. The main issue is the rate of charge, since it can be used to charge a portable power bank. Obviously the 2+ puts out more and has a much bigger battery, but in a grid-down scenario, with all the other competing demands (food, heat, defense, etc) is the 2+ worth it --- for someone with limited resources --- if I already have the 1? I just ordered the Kettlepot for $11.21 (discount code) and wouldn't mind having a second kettle pot anyway, (one for coffee and one for Mountain House breakfast skillet) so that's not an issue, but what are your thoughts honestly? My original camp stove I only used on one weekend to film a couple demonstration videos (like you did, ironically). BTW, I did get their new Alpenglow 500 though; most dazzling piece of rugged off-grid light technology ever made.

Thanks for the review, Mike! For hot dogs w/ ketchup, try slicing the hot dogs diagonally (like carrots for some asian dishes) about 1/4" thick slices and fry them with the ketchup. Fry the hot dog slices first, then add the ketchup about a minute before finishing. Pretty good combo w/ steamed rice. I typically go w/ mustard for hot dogs in a hot dog bun.

"Cowspiracy" is full of inaccurate information. If you'd like to make a huge difference for the planet with your food choices, follow the lead of the folks at The Savory Institute. Cows are not the problem - our management of them is the problem. If we manage livestock in a way that stimulates the behavior of ancient grazing herds, there is great potential the heal the soil, heal the water cycle, regenerate the land, and produce delicious & healthy food - all at the same time. Just a little info on an issue I ran into recently. I help out with a backcountry and overnight camp class where stoves are one of the topics covered. During one of the winter camps a student brought along a small metal stove that used sticks and branches for a heat source. We had some issues with the stove due to weather, coldness (snow) and altitude, but it worked out in the end. Many of those issues would be solved by the BioLite, and I've always been curious about them. An issue came up later, however, about this style being an "open flame" cooking device - similar to using a fire pit for cooking. This led to some questions about Forest Service regulations. I contacted the Forest Service and learned that during fire restriction season they require any cooking device be "immediately extinguishable" - i.e. just turn the knob and it's off. They said the stoves using branches and such would be against the regulations, and unfortunately some of these locations have the restrictions year round (I inquired about middle of winter in the snow and got the same response). In other locations where the restrictions are only seasonal you would be required to have a camp fire permit issued from the Forest Service (and I'm only talking about CA/High Sierras, but I would assume the Forest Service in different areas/states have similar requirements). The permit is really easy to get, and the fines are pretty steep for not having one.
@jm7720

Im sure you can by fire blankets. The button on the device can turn off fan then just toss the fire blanket over and no more oxygen = no more fire. But very good point you brought up.

Go Whole-Food Plantbased and you'll never look back. I used to hunt a lot, so it was a difficult transition. But, I feel better than ever. Definitely read "How Not To Die" by Dr. Michael Greger!

I generally eat very healthy and a lot of what I grow and raise myself but until I get my cattle more sustainable, store bought beef hotdogs are my go to comfort food and I like them with ketchup and Tabasco

Mike, I realize this isn’t an option for everyone, but growing up on a small cattle farm, I’m fairly confident that the fields, meadows, woods on the farm pumping out O2 offset any negative environmental impacts of a few dozen cattle farting into the atmosphere. The cattle get to spend time in pasture and live generally pretty good lives. No steroids or antibiotics, cramped quarters, etc. The most recent steer we had butchered worked out to about $3/ lbs (ground beef and steaks) and is better quality than just about anything you’d buy at the store. If you have the freezer space, consider purchasing a whole cow (or bison?) from a local rancher with 4 or 5 of your friends. Better quality meat / lower environmental impact / supporting small farmers and butchers / lower overall cost. Win / win / win / win. Hunting is the other obvious ethical way to get red meat, but I understand that’s also not for everyone.

Last Line Of Defense didn’t see it, my bad! Still worth seeing if there are any bison ranchers out your way. I think you’d be surprised how economical it is to buy meat on the hoof. Bison is super expensive where I am on the East Coast.

I have nothing against solar power or panels as I have a small setup at my off grid cabin but how environmentally friendly is a battery to produce and dispose of? Arguments can be made for or against just about anything. I prefer to just live my life and not over think the environment. Bottom line is a lot of these small arguments come about to scare people so other people can make money off them. That's just my opinion anyway. Great videos man.

Ketchup and Mustard. Chicago style every now and again is ok too. Kinda messy though, whoever thought that one up got it right on the flavor department, but 0/10 for being able to ...you know...take a bite, lol.
