We need much more Bathory. The most important band in black metal history. One of the first vinyls I bought was his second realese "The Return" An amazing album that got me really into Black Metal back in late 80`s

The lyrics to this song is where you will understand the essence in him, bar his shortcomings that don't appeal to all, vocals etc...Bathory inspired me to pick up a guitar when I was 16, I am now 47 and still return to his work for inspiration, many have tried...none have succeeded in giving us more than what he gave

@@Exhumed-s1wThat is a bit off to be honest, atleast regarding the Death/Black Metal Scene in Sweden. When Quorthon (RIP) began, Venom wasn't introduced in Sweden. So these two are two different bands, influencing in their own way, starting on opposite side of the Nordic Sea.

@@Exhumed-s1w Venom “pioneered” Black Metal by creating the name and satamic Imagery. But it was Bathory who pioneered the sound of Black Metal. Venom just sounded like Badly recorded motorhead. Bathory’s self titled and “The Return” are what defined what Black Metal should sound like.

Would this album have been slightly more polished with a more experienced vocalist? Probably. But the fact that Quorthon decided to experiment with vocals and do them himself, is sorta the charm of the album as well. The way he did stuff with bathory set the foundation for black metal, Viking metal and folk metal

Hey As old Bathory fan I can tell that the first 3 albums are pure black metal gold. Each 12/12 !! They made this album you now are listening to as viking metal . --------- I write to tell about a tradition we had back at this time. We gathered in the woods with a single beer or 2 or perhaps som tobacco not bought in the nearest shop ... Somehow I always was the person who bought the new LP from B. Without nobody listen I taped it to a compact cassette and we all started the party with fire and food and we were all dressed in for excample as vikings. If people can understand that we all came from hailing " Under a sign of the black Mark " and at this unholy night started to listen to the backcatalouge ending with this album ..... ?? Holy shit !! 180 % away ! Because his 4. album is NOT bad we all was shocked because a shift in genres from black metal (HAIL Satan !) to viking metal. . ! Bathory was the first former of viking metal ! Tomas Forsberg later on told that he was tired of fanatics into Sathanas. In a week he could have got to many dead goats with the post .... Therefore he wanted to change from blak metal to viking. I cant remember if this was the shift but he planned to do " Blood on Ice" but thought it was a to much shift for his fans ..... Blood on Ice came in 96 and. "Blood on Ice" was all ready when he released this album ......... but the time was NOT ready for this and therefore it was released many years later !

It's not the first time Quorthon has done clean vocals. The first time was on the previous release, the "Hammerheart" album, and he did it much better back then. I think i'm falling in love with this channel.

It's very obvious that Quorthon absolutely gave sh*t about being pitchy on this album. Guitars as well as vocals. Being very, very obviously flat gives the song a very different turn. Seemingly, he wanted to sound as authentic as can be. Think vikings. Think religious and archaic. Think of things like before Bach's Temperiertes Klavier, i.e. physical tunings of early medievil times. Him being flat brings the feelings of despair, of being small against the power of nature and gods. Very stressed, at the end of what he can do. Twilight of the Gods essentially is the apocalypse of the viking religion, the last days of everything, endless bad weather. For me, leaving in the very flat vocals is a conscious decision to make it sound really different. If you compare this sound to the rest of the metal world at that time, that got more and more polished, this gives it a very original sound. Also, the sound often is very densely compressed. If you listen to the original vinyl, this was very obvious, a brutal wall of sound that has absolutely no hurry to bring changes. Also very good decision to let the apocalypse feel infinite. Quorthon for sure wanted to let no doubt about being totally sincere with his spiritual work towards viking religion. YMMV, but this is what I got from it, from the point when I heard this album when it came out. Nice reaction as always, Kaiya, have a great weekend! \m/

Bathory from their self titled debut to Nordland II the last, cover almost all Black Metal genres. This is the first album that was full on Epic Black Metal. I bought this when it came out and it surprised me a bit as i was expecting Hammerheart Part 2. This is an amazing album and one of my favourites by Bathory. As for the vocals, i have always liked his cleans even though they can be a bit flat. Not bad for what was essentially for the most part a one man band.

I can see where you are coming from as far as his lead vocals are concerned, but if you wrap your head around how Quorthon, one guy alone, wrote and recorded absolutely everything by himself, and wrote those amazing lyrics, which are essentially social critique, but with religious and mythological twists, you cannot but recognize his amazing talent. R.I.P.

aaaaw the whole twilight of gods album is such a ⚒🔥🔥💎 🔥🔥⚔🔥🔥 it took for while to get into it but it has revealed many deeper thoughts and feelings. at the beginning, the slightly groping and out-of-tune style of vocals rubbed my throat a little, but after few horns of "vikings mead" it started to fit better in the soundscape. I have always like this viking metal style better than their black metal ones ( though I acknowledge its enormous influence)..

Great review, as always :) Yes, this album was a bit sad. Still, pretty good, maybe a little underrated, due to the impact of its two predecessors. Although, I wasn't a big fan of the other albums that followed. But there are gems, for sure. Under the Sign of the Black Mark, from the pre-thrash/heavy metal change, remains my favorite.

@6:45 Don't feel too shocked. I'm a huge Bathory fan but I could NEVER stand Quorthon's clean vocals. His Black Metal vocals on the other hand are on point. Which is why I'm a stickler for the self-titled debut album. Kaiya, if you want the best of both worlds (= this epic viking atmosphere, PLUS proper BM vocals then you need to check out the band called "Morrigan" (Ger.) or their predecessor called "Mayhemic Truth")

With Kaiya at least you know you get her authentic personality and authentic reaction and besides not all metal genres for everyone.
