Wonderful! Meredith has been a favorite of mine for ages, he's so versatile and smooth in every role I've ever seen him in. Thank You, Rick Nineg!

His granddaughter is a Facebook friend of mine, and has shared all kinds of fun stories about him. She was born after his Batman days, and couldn't figure out why people would quack at him in public! Coincidentally (or not?), Burgess passed away 27 years ago yesterday.

There is no amount of money on Earth that I would perform that stunt. I'm just too afraid of fire and getting burnt. I don't really remember this episode. I will have to look it up. Thanks Rick

I just can’t stop seeing The Penguin references through out this video. The way Burgess smoked in that one photo still, the freezing of his fingers in ice, the fact he was playing an evil character, etc. 🐧 Regardless, Burgess Meredith was an actor with an amazingly bold work ethic. Imagine putting yourself at risk like that for a role! Dude! Once again, LOVE these behind the scenes stories! Each one increases my respect for the overall production! Thank you for sharing these. 👍🏻

When I was in the military, and on KP duty this particular day, in the messhall-they were having an issue with the conveyor belt that was supposed to be taking chicken patties through a deep fat fryer, so they had us at one end, dropping in the patties and at the other end were cooks, with their hands immersed in ice water, that as soon as a patty rose to the surface (cooked), the cooks would reach into the hot grease (360 degrees) and yank out the now cooked patties. The way it works, is, burns happen from heat accumulation, so if the skin is already cooled and the immersion in hot oil is quick (one second), there is no accumulation of heat, plus, the hand being wet, a barrier of sorts forms as long as the contact is kept extremely brief.

Wow, I never new that they did it so simply. I figured that they used the stuff that fire breathers would use to transfer a flame from one stick to another.

When I was a teenager I used to freak out my friends by diping my finger in rubbing alcohol and lighting it on fire. Before I did it I would coat my finger in a thin layer of elmers glue and let it dry, that kept me from actually getting burned. To make it even more impressive I would peel off the "burned" skin and show them that my finger was fine.

That lighter fluid trick works well, as long as there is no hair in the skin it is used on. Richard Feynman explains how he discovered that hair will act like a wick that the lighter fluid might follow thru the water layer into the skin.

Love your stuff so glad I stumbled on it. I grew up in the sixties and as a kid one of my families best show nights was The Twilight Zone. It’s terrific to hear you discuss this stuff. As a kid I was amazed at the show. Thanks for your hard work.

Fire, along with "special effects" often went horribly wrong in films. The wonderful Margaret Hamilton ("The Wicked Witch of Oz") was horribly burned in an early ("Munchkinland") scene in "Oz." She was severely burned and could have died on that day. The single mom never sued - Miss Hamilton was so afraid of being black-balled by the film industry and needed her work.

When I was in college a half century ago, I had a simpler way of doing it. Inflammable LIQUIDS aren't inflammable. Gasoline, lighter fluid, and alcohol burn only in gaseous form. When alcohol burns, it leaves the surface cooler. I once poured a capful of alcohol into the palm of my hand, lit it, and it burned off completely without burning my hand. Don't try that with lighter fluid; alcohol burns cooler. I once poured a bottle of alcohol down the dorm stairs (inside the building) and watched a cascade of fire roll down the stairs without burning the steps. Again, don't try this with any other inflammable liquid.

Yes, Rick, I've seen this episode. In primetime, actually, plus I have the complete box set of the original Twilight Zone. I agree. Most of the hour long episodes aren't that good. I didn't care for the episodes recorded on video tape either. When something's right, DON'T tamper with it.
