The German Messerschmitt Bf 109Z twin (Zwilling) Bf 109 prototype (The Teutonic Twin-Boom Terror) was destroyed in an attack by the British in 1943 before it was completed, and the project subsequently abandoned. Strange that it retained all four landing gear and did not remove the two middle ones to save weight (or replace with fuel tanks) like the F-82 Twin Mustang did. But what the 109Z sorely lacked at the middle join was a nacelle packed with 8 .50 machine guns like the P-82B or a radar as with the F-82F night fighter. The North American F-82 Twin Mustang arrived too late to enter service during the War but later saw service in the Korean war.

Just sayin' but the 109Z is an older design than the F-82 and was designed as an attempt to standardize parts and manufacturing lines since the Z didn't require anything to be changed (from the production line) and could be updated as the single fuselage models got updated.

Just for future reference the BF109 Zwilling prototype was made 2-3 years before the F-82 Twin Mustang (which didn't fly until mid-late 1945 - post German defeat) but the jokes were still pretty great, definitely play with Benny more often he's hilarious as shit.

It was actually designed to bypass restrictions on new aircraft , but never really flew beyond testing. The Germans were trying to build a heavy fighter to counter the bomber swarms.

The 109 Z Project was not influenced by the F-82. The F-82's first flight was mid 1945. The Z project was cancelled mid 1944 cause for fighter priority. The goal of the Z was to build a low coast destroyer/fighterbomber which shared a lot of its parts with common aircrafts.

What benny says is actually wrong they tried to build a powerfull plane to tie on a huge cargo glider which they had to transport tanks at the beginning of the war, but the project was abandoned because of its low efficiency and they build a huge self powered cargo plane instead.

The actual Bf-109 Zwilling had 5 30mm cannons. The 5th one was in the middle between the two fuselages; I guess Gaijin thought that 4 was a good way to prevent people from crying about it on Reddit or the War Thunder forums

Wonder if WT will develop the BF109X. It was an export version of the 109 with a radial BMW-801 and cut down rear fuselage. From a distance it could be mistaken for a FW190. Because of the radial it also had a wider fuselage. Really the only thing that visually gave its lineage away was the tail, landing gear, and early 109 model squared wings.
