Life is strange really took the worst subplot of twin peaks and said "fuck it we'll make that the backbone of our game"

I've gotten an interest in David Lynch recently after the Inland Empire skill in Disco Elysium, which lets the player makes connections between dreams and possibilities in the world, and my parents once living at the filming location of a project where Lynch was present. I've been reading his hybrid biography Room to Dream, and the theme of violence against comes from his experiences seeing the effects first hand, both as a child and as an adult. This is a really nice video essay following the nature of thematic references versus specific references.

Thank u so much!! I’m reading Room to Dream rn too and it’s very interesting to hear esp of the instance that inspired blue velvet, lynch has always been sympathetic to violence against women specifically

@@milesmemory It also reads very strongly that he had some kind of neurodivergence. Such signs include getting exhausted masking as different personalities, dressing in very specific ways like always buttoning his shirts up all the way so his neck isn't exposed, getting sensory overload and being very sensitive to sounds, and refusing to drive to the set of Wild at Heart until he saw a total of license plates that contained the initials of his name, DKL.

Great essay! Very smart writing and editing. If you ever make a second part, I'd love to see your takes on Mizzurna Falls, Deadly Premonitions and Alan Wake.

Thank you so much! I still have to play the first 2 u suggested but if there’s a demand a part two will be around sometime!

@@milesmemory Consider this additional demand. Mizzurna Falls has a fan made translation patch so it's now accessible to western audiences. Nonetheless, Deadly Premonition is the most unapologetically Twin Peaks game ever, but I'm not certain that it's to its detriment. It's clearly a love letter to TP, but it's also thoroughly entertaining in its own right. Alan Wake is also truly amazing. Would love to see your take. Thanks for the great video.

@@milesmemoryYou prob already did your research but it is a Japanese PSX game that just recently received an English translations patch. Theres this one location in game that does such a great job at making me feel like I'm in a miniscule version of Twin Peaks was the cross roads with one single stop light swaying in the wind. The diner on the corner and some shops around. It felt so cool to see them pay attention to what feels like such a minor lynch thing that being the ominous stop light at the end of the pilot

You know what game reminds me of David lynch the most? Kingdom hearts. No I will not elaborate, and no I am not being ironic at all Awesome video btw 😁

You should check out Mizzurna Falls. TP has been influencing video games for decades. The biggest one is probably Silent Hill.

Now this is one I haven’t heard of I’ll totally check it out! And yeah I think Silent Hill is probably the #1 game ppl think of around being inspired by Twin Peaks which is why I wanted to choose things I haven’t heard people talk about as much (especially something like Rusty lake I’ve never even see a video essay on it before)

An excellent video essay! I've been wanting to do something about Lynch or TP for a while. It's great to see Peaks content that dives into its impact like this (*Cooper thumbs up gif* 👍)

If you have not, you NEED to play Deadly Premonition. Its basically Twin Peaks, the game. Its SO SO fun and the characters and writing is fantastic!

Do you know deadly premonition? If not look it up right now ^^ All the other examples have inspired elements of twin peaks, but deadly premonition is basically if a Japanese dev decides to make his own twin peaks without a license and with some cultural blurry lines
@milesmemory2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t played it but almost added it to the footage of general cultural references, not my cup of tea but a fascinating look into what could be seen somewhat as an adaptation of twin peaks

@@milesmemory The whole time altering plot and small town teen setting are probably the biggest ones. The ending has pretty much the same message about chaos theory and the butterfly effects of altering time lines, as well as the same conclusion. I could maybe name more but it has been a while since I saw it.
