Twin Peaks Overview #7: It Can Be Said Aloud Now

**EDIT: long read** And here I sit, cocktail in hand, thinking it was to be another usual Monday night with my usual 70s and 80's tunes. You've presented questions that I and others have asked maybe countless times, presented points that flew over my head until someone else pointed it out, and everything in between. The biggest question I think any of us could ask is... WHAT!? at this point, I feel the HOW has been left well enough alone. I don't think a season 4 will happen. Maybe that's more-so a hope in my end. I guess part of me doesn't want a season 4 due to the mystery still being quite alive and well (well, sort of) which was a huge factor in many fans' reactions to The Return. "what if it's not Twin Peaks-y enough? What if the mystery gets solved and it loses its luster?" And I feel that in the potential of a season 4. The flip side of that is, if there is indeed a season 4, one of the biggest theories I've pulled is... We have not seen the end of Richard. He is not dead. That trap was set for DoppelCoop to transport him back to the Black Lodge, not to kill him. Richard has been in the Black Lodge for who knows how long (technically for about 3 years since he got zapped in October of 2016) and he has no doubt grown darker and more in tact evil. He was born from evil, there were electrical pylons crackling when he pulled over to shoddily clean the blood off his truck. He is part Lodge part real world and since he got pulled into the lodge, he is absolutely pure evil now. I guarantee it. So let's say season 4 happens. Richard emerges, sets out to finish what Bob and Doppel Coop started, Judy FULLY emerges in some form, ALL Coopers meet up- we get the show down we thought we would? Maybe. Maybe not. But if it happens, that's been my go to prediction. ALLLLLLLLL of that to say, three things I want to mention as my favourites of your ever fantastic Twin Peaks videos. 1. Way to set my soul dancing emotionally with all the musical segways , Wild Wild West got me misty eyed. 2. The passed away actors and actresses are still heavy for me, and having to replace either Truman or even (this one still burns ) Norma... it's unspeakable. 3. LIGHTER NOTE! Way to start me off laughing with Cameron there. Good Ferris Bueller's Day Off throw in there! As always. Out of the fucking park~

Interesting thoughts about Richard. I suppose it could have been a plan to capture Bad Coop after he eluded being sucked back in. On the subject of Norma, I doubt they'd try and replace her. She and Ed seemed to have come to the end of their storylines, and could just as easily not appear (Everett McGill had long since retired from acting at the time season 3 was getting rolling...I hear they had some trouble even finding him at first).

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Peggy Lipton's passing hit us like a ton of bricks, to sum it up nicely. I know in my heart that David would never dream of recasting her. I didn't know that there was some struggle to find Everett McGill, that's interesting to me. Either way, there's a lot of questions to be answered that, knowing Lynch, will never be answered. at least, not fully ;)

I dont think, if David Lynch made another season, he will kill the mystery. If he answers some questions, he will definitely leave more questions, like he did in S3. Because the idea is the mystery. And it all really depends on if he gets the ideas for new stuff and if he gets ideas for the answers while daydreaming the world or if he already had those answers to work on for the next time. We never know and l would also be satisfied either way. And also I don't think its for us or Mark Frost or Subrina to decide whether there should or should not be more, so even David Lynch wouldn't know til it happens. : ) Also, the story will go how the ideas come to him and not how it should continue from there from any sense of writing a story or tv show. No one will ever know how and where it goes til ideas come subconsciously to David

@@thatoneoddball2564 Agree with you that you cannot and Lynch mostly won't replace any actors with another because thats how we know them. We saw what happened to the Arm and Phillip. I have a feeling if there is the next chapter, in any form, if those characters are mentioned, they would have passed on from Twin Peaks too, because they mention Log Lady passing in the show. Jeffries was part of the time travel and stuff, so it made sense for him to return in that form and the Arm is a Lodge entity, so it's understandable to make a tree out of him, because you can't replace those faces with other people, it'll never feel the same. Like CornPone mentions The Jumping Man actor being the same, even if we don't see his actual face. I'd guess Donna was changed in FWWM because perhaps David Lynch had his ideas for the character so he had to ask someone else. But Truman was changed to another character, instead of same. Would be great if Michael Ontkean and J. Anderson returned with their role, because they are so memorable Also, David Lynch said, in the world of Twin Peaks, Gordon Cole would be devastated about Albert

@@thatoneoddball2564 Norma Jennings WAS Twin Peaks. Everyone in the show Twin Peaks got their happy ending. Season 4 will take place in the REAL world. Lynch used the real life residents of Laura Palmer's house to tell us he is now in the REAL world. And he just brought Judy with him. The only other people to cross over with Dale was Diane and..... Audrey Horne. Episode 15 was solved like a self encapsulated crime show that Lynch created Twin Peaks to combat. Dale comes back as we knew him and he solves the crime all within that 1 episode. But then he is watching himself and realizing "we live inside a dream". They lived inside Lynch's dream(or Audrey's.) But then Dale crosses over, into the real world as "Richard" and Diane as "Linda". Dale finds Laura Palmer, who is now "Carrie Paige". They go to Laura's old house, but it's not the same house. It is the set of the house they used for the TV show 25 years ago. What year is this is not the correct question. What reality is this, is the real question Dale needs to be asking. The numbers 3 and 15 do represent the episodes. Dale could have went straight to episode 15 and get that closure we the audience demanded.... but that is not the correct path to take. It is what doomed the show to begin with, demanding the answer to who killed Laura Palmer. Naido corrected this and sent him to episode 3 instead. Dale Cooper is the audience. We were the ones that instinctively wanted to jump to episode 15, and it was Lynch telling us as Naido.... "no, that is not the way". The real story is in the mundane. Twin Peaks is all about the evil of bad television. Things got much more violent in Season 3 because television itself has become much more violent. The evil travels through fire/electricity and air/wind. Yes, some of these observations are in that "god-awfully long video", but these theories already were out there, they just get expanded upon. Everyone's theory is valid, even Lynch would agree with that. If people think Laura destroyed Judy with a scream, great, let them have their closure. If people think Judy followed them to the real world, even better, it leaves the mystery open. Judy was trapped in a time loop prison the Fireman made "It is on our house now." She was contained. But then she "locked on" to Laura Palmer once Dale brought her within proximity to her. Laura screamed because she saw briefly saw a glimpse of Judy in her true form coming through the power lines, and the electrical outlet like Dale did. Possessed Sarah came through and she is walking out that door to claim her prize. Richard doesn't enjoy the coffee as much anymore because he is Mr C and Dale, combined. Mr C hates coffee and rejects it when offered, Dale loves coffee and always accepts it, when brought into balance, light and dark.... he has no feelings toward coffee. He orders it because he is compelled to, but doesn't really care for it one way or the other. Mr C's goal was to find Judy. He wanted to take the place of BOB, which I think Lynch named after Bob Iger who was constantly pressuring him and was the person bringing senseless violence into the world through TV. But Judy loved BOB and told Mr C he was going back into the Lodge soon. But then BOB is killed and Judy goes berserk, smashing Laura's picture, blaming her. So now if Mr C brings Judy the one thing she wants most, Laura Palmer.... then Mr C can take BOB's place. He has already proven himself to be more cunning than the instant self gratifying BOB. He is meticulous and much more dangerous. BOB just had supernatural gifts that Mr C did not possess. BOB enjoyed all the violence and chaos that Mr C created, but it was Mr C driving he bus, not BOB. BOB was always in the backseat letting Mr C do his thing, unlike with Leland. Mr C was totally using BOB for his supernatural gifts. Now Mr C just needs to be extracted from Richard once again, which will also cause Dale to be extracted as well, and forced into the White or Black Lodge. Or into direct audience with the Fireman in his theater castle that rests above an ocean of collective dreams and consciousness.

The coolest part about Season 3, for me, was seeing Cooper slow down, literally, because it inadvertently gave him something his lifestyle and his time in the Black Lodge denied him, a family. He got to have a normal life for a while, to feel loved, to have a son that loved and adored him. Special Agent Dale Cooper would never be allowed the time for such things.

Twin Peaks the Return was so earth shattering experience that blew my emotions to new heights. I'm just so sad that I binged it just weeks after the finale premiered. I would love to have season 4 that I could watch with all the other fans, as I'm sure the experience would be even more powerful. In my first binge watching I didn't like the songs in the end of the episodes. Though I was idiot and watched it with my laptop and it's speakers. On my second watch I bought the best earpuds under 500$ range and great TV. I watched it in complete dark room and was so blown away by the music and sounds. If you have not watched/heard Twin Peaks The Return with superb quality headphones/earpuds, go buy for example 1more triple driver earpuds and rewatch the show. I guarantee it will be a completely new experience. Just like Lynch intended.

Having completed my second watch a few months ago, I can say with confidence that Twin Peaks is complete. David Lynch did exactly what he set out to do and ended the final two episodes the way he wanted to. We will never have definitive answers to these questions, and that's ok. Twin Peaks means a lot of things to a lot of people, and I don't think Lynch could be happier about that.

Another great installment. I hope there's a good reason to make more in the future, but this was a delightful ending to a wonderful series. I've watched all of the big TP analyses on KZbin, and your interpretation is very similar to mine. Which is always nice. A side note: I was at the Q&A where Lynch mentions that Laura's story is still calling him but that there are "disturbances," and the hairs on the back of my neck stood straight up. Wonderful, strange energy that guy has. Love him. EDIT because I forgot: I like your take on Cole seeing Laura when he opens the door, although I personally always thought it simply represented that Cole was one of the few people who would remember the original timeline where Laura dies. I just found these, I love how your analyses manages to leave the experience of Twin Peaks alive while clearing up some connections and information I have missed, because I was just so caught up in the experience of it. Love your work, keep it up. My husky was just as confounded as yours at the end. For my 2 cents, the white horse represents willful delusion, THE Lynch motif. Choosing to look away instead of confronting. Sarah knew something was wrong and did nothing, and look at what she became. Cooper seeing the white horse could be delusion over several things, but I like to think it's the delusion of escaping the lodge and being Laura's white knight. The curtain pulls away and the flooring goes on forever, there is no escape. Carrie has the white horse on her mantle and... I can take that one step further into crazytown, but I digress. I also seemed to be one of those few that did not want answers either, the question is far more interesting and if you knew this about Lynch going into The Return, you'd just enjoy the journey for what it was. So many wanted the same Coffee & Cherry Pie, like before, whereas, I wanted something else, something quite different from the menu and so, I was thrilled when I got it. I could see that the pie and coffee were still on that menu, even if many thought it wasn't. You really hit the nail on the head with the last part of the video. I could try to explain what happened at the end of season 3. Maybe it was Laura attacking Judy, maybe it’s a meta commentary on the nature of TV revivals, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that I’ll never forget how watching that scene made me feel for as long as I live.

People always seem to assert, without any spoken justification, that everything Lynch does is deliberate and done for a specific reason. Even if that's true, they do oddly tend to ignore the likelihood that said reason might be for emotional response or aesthetics, always instead assuming it's plot-related. I mean, the guy stated off as a painter, and painting isn't really a narrative medium. I think large portions of his film work aren't meant to be, either.

An explanation for the extra diary page being about Carrie Page would connect to Laura writing about her dreams. The story of Carrie Page ends with Laura hearing her mothers voice calling her from downstairs on the day after she died. She was saved by Cooper and could therefore hear Sarah waking her up from the dream of Carrie Page. She would then presumably write about being an older woman who was taken home by a man in a suit. It's in the official version (timeline where Laura didn't die) and could explain it's absence in the un-official version (timeline where she did die).

Could be, but the only element I've heard anyone bring up to indicate a connection is the use of the word "page," which is awfully rickety. Until something is written by the show's creators regarding that missing page, it remains just a bit of whimsy to think on. (Incidentally, the "unofficial" version is the version where she dies, not the other way around.)

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks You're right, I mixed up my versions, oops. I haven't seen anyone connecting it to the missing page either, but what I just posted felt like it fit. I never considered the theory until hearing about it in your video. Laura has mentioned Cooper as someone she's only seen in dreams. I'm very sure that the final scene is one of those dreams that are also part of a lodge-type reality (Coop is experiencing them even though they are "dreams"). The ending with a voice clip of Sarah calling to Laura from downstairs cements this in my mind. Because Laura could only be hearing it if she was asleep in her bed as opposed to having died the night before. It's feels like another instance of using previous footage and giving it new meaning (like the scream where Laura sees Coop in the woods with footage from FWWM). The fact that Laura records in her diary her weird dreams involving the lodge and Coop fits with this dream where Coop travels through lodges to meet her once again.

Out of the endless amounts of analysis on the Internet, I like yours the best and always had the feeling that many others watching your videos agree with me. But during all of this I sometimes got a slight feeling that other people watching your analysis could indeed think there would be an end to the search, that there actually would be all questions answered and that S3 lead us closer to a conclusion that was yet to come. But what I always saw as the concept of Twin Peaks was a) the strange, cheesy, mysterious and somehow cozy aesthetic established in S1 and S2, even though we don't know how much that aesthetic was created by accident and b) conveying the feeling of mystery. And you can only keep up the mystery as long as you don't explain it in full. Lynch said "Who killed Laura Palmer' was a question that we did not ever really want to answer. And at a certain point we were told we needed to wrap that up and it never really got going again after that." And I can see how not ever revealing the Killer could have been the original plan. New mystery needed to be introduced after the reveal. I feel like it's supposed to be a Sherlock Holmes detective story, but without the reveal. Instead the mystery is kept alive. And still it is not like walking on the same spot for years. It is making progress and we are getting answers throughout the series, movie and books. But none of the anwers will be that final one. As much as S3 at least on the surface moved on from the detective story, I still feel that same kind of detective mystery. There is progress and clues and answers and we are making up ground on the mystery but we are never arriving. Like in science, answering one question brings up 2 more while leaving others completely untouched. Slowly deciphering the universe without ever achieving full knowledge of everything ever. So I also agree with your thoughts about a S4 or another movie: I'd love it. Just for the sake of getting more. But I would never expect a conclusion or a definite end. The only thing I often think about and can't help to imagine is how this series would have went if Lynch and Frost could have done whatever they want in S1 and not reveal the killer ever. I love this idea, it makes my heart beat faster.

I feel like if we ever do get a season 4, Lynch would do a hard swerve in the tone. Like how Season 3 is in lot of ways bashing nostalgia and the idea that this story could somehow work out, I feel like a Season 4 would work to somehow rebuild that destroyed hope, like maybe Coop would somehow destroy Judy and drive off into the sunset with Laura Palmer, or Diane, or even Audrey. It just seems like Lynch always wants to give us what we never would expect

I literally ran home to watch this. Beautiful work, Matt. I’m with you, I don’t think some of this stuff means anything. I’ve always been intrigued by the jumping man but if he’s just weird for the sake of weirdness I can appreciate that. I don’t think we’re getting a 4th season, everyone who is anyone at showtime fucking hates twin peaks despite trying to milk every penny with their crap merchandise. I think the cast and extras changing places at the diner could be pretty straightforward: Cooper very explicitly changed the timeline, broke it in two. Now there are two versions of the story overlapping each other and (almost?) all the characters sense it, like at the market when Laura's mom realizes the jerky is not the same as it was before. In the diner scene we see the two realities play off each other in between takes, like two singers taking solo turns on the same song.

One aspect of great art is its power to perplex and stay with us. Appreciation of that is due. All the questions you pose, and that viewers have asked, are great fodder for future content/seasons. There is so much potential here: Audrey, Billy, Tina, her daughter and friend at the roadhouse; Carrie's back-story; the man on her couch; Chet Desmond; Becky, Stephen and Kirsten; the remaining missing diary page; the guy in the jail cell; Gerry Horne; and more. Laura's death is still the "goose that lays golden eggs". Does Carrie asking Cooper "Did you find him?" indicate that Carrie has seen Cooper/Richard before? if not, who is she confusing him with?

Sad to see this series go, especially all the work that went into setting up the video. Like the purple world and the talk show. Still great job and I agree a lot about people focusing too much on answers and not the bigger picture. In some ways Twin Peaks to me reminds me when I first played a game called Yume Nikki, it also based around dreams and doesn't give you answers. But I feel that becomes one of the strongest aspect of the game, making your own interpretation. Later down the line I watched Twin Peaks and felt very similar feelings there. All I wanted from The Return is a bit more of great actors and see a bit more of the dream. Though I gotta say I feel less bad somehow about The Return cliffhanger than season 2. S2 ending made me really anxious, The Return had me very curious but not as worried I suppose haha.

The ending of season 2 bugged me because it was obviously not supposed to be the ending. They were clearly (and by their own admission) trying to generate interest for a third season. I think the absence of any kind of true closure is, in a way, probably necessary for something like this, though.

I love that you just talk more so about theories but don't pretend to know all the answers, it's more of a discussion and I wish it was more popular retrospectives of the series. Never really bothered expressing this anywhere but what the hell. What throws me off so much about the FBI desk guy yelling at Wilson is how he beats his fist on his desk. Usually, when people are angry, they will emphasize words or rhythms with their gestures. That is to say: most people would have 'kept the beat' of their actual vocal patterns. The way he just slams his fist on his desk in this weird rhythmic way that is completely disconnected with what he's actually saying, makes the whole scene take a nosedive into the uncanny valley for me. Just a small observation that I don't think have any real implications for the story, but what the hell!

very good, i agree, much of lynch's work has been best interpreted by how makes you feel, and in turn, that becomes a reflection on your own psyche as you are connecting dots, his tone and mood conjure feelings and images but those come from your own perspective and and experiences, being literal is great because it gives you something that you can interpret as making sense, but sometimes the abstract and surreal allows you to explore your own mind and heart, i get the same feeling form the mars volta, their music is more about the feeling/mood than the literal meaning,

After watching all your overviews and two other good commentaries, plus a talk by Lynch himself, I had a Eureka moment and put it all together. I understand just about everything in the series now. In particular, when Diane sees herself leaving the motel it's actually very simple. She's just imagining herself "seeing" herself leaving without Cooper. That's why neither Diane reacts as if it's strange. It's just Lynch's way to dramatize how much of a traumatic thing it will be, Diane knows this, it's part of the overall plan.

Honestly, I don't try to understand Twin Peaks too much, I just enjoy the story as it is and the humor and mystery as well. The art too of course...me being a hobby photographer. I like to watch these videos that try to explain more about Twin Peaks just because I enjoy Twin Peaks so much and it’s an excuse to get more twin peaks...not because I want the mystery solved. I really enjoy the touching scenes in the episodes directed by David Lynch like the story Bobby’s father was telling him about the dream he had and other little seems like that. I really enjoy Lynch’s sense of humor too!

Twin Peaks the return was like a nostalgic bomb for me. I absolutely loved it, as confusing as it was. I will admit, I was initially disappointed by the left turn at the end. I was loving the coming climax of Mr. C and Cooper clashing at the sheriff station. But after rewatching and thinking about it, the ending was great. Judy, Laura and all. It was a masterpiece and it doesn’t matter to me if it made perfect sense. My life doesn’t make sense either. Great videos! Thanks so much!

I love all your Twin Peaks videos. Regarding this one: According to The Final Dossier, Becky is alive and working in a bakery owned by Norma. As for the missing diary page, it could be symbolic of Lynch's tendency to not give us all the pieces of the puzzle. The fact that there's still a page missing means that some things remain a mystery. And that's how he likes it.

Watched this for possibly the fourth time tonight - such a great piece of work. The one thing that really sticks with me is the observation near the end - that much of the joy of twin peaks was in scenes done purely for their inherent beauty. I am thinking of Harry Dean playing 'Red River Valley' the green tea latte guy furtively smiling in delight, Gordon Cole smoking with the ladies - all of these beautiful moments require no explanation or interpretation. 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole' indeed.

My friends and I often discuss theories about Twin Peaks, both our own and ones we've seen on the internet. On more than one occasion we have come to the conclusion that a particular something in the show doesn't have to have a meaning; David Lynch is first and foremost an artist and sometimes he just likes to put in something that he thinks will come across as cool or interesting or weird. If there's never going to be more Twin Peaks I think I'm OK with that, as there's plenty of studying to do with what already exists!

I think maybe the best part of season 3 is that 25 years had passed in real time. When I saw the 25 year gap between s2 and s3 and heard Laura tell Coop she would see him again in 25 years(and I'm Dead and Yet I Live) BLEW MY MIND. Historic set up and Historic Payoff.

It was, of course, not a deliberate setup. They very much wanted for the show to have a season 3 immediately following season 2. Lynch had given up on Peaks for years. The 25-year anniversary was a very convenient way to get back into the story, though it actually ended up being longer. The original series was set in 1989, and the third season didn't air until 2017.

It was amazing to watch these videos tonight, thank you! Twin Peaks is fascinating, no matter how much time passes. In fact, as time goes on, we just discover more things and see everything in different ways. I confess that I am a little disappointed with the end of most characters, not because I wanted a happy ending for everyone (that would never happen, I know), but because I thought the endings were not very creative/varied: drugs, alcoholism, madness or death for everybody. There are not many other options besides that, except for Nadine/Big Ed/Norma. However, I know that it was probably done this way to show that 1) Laura's death affected the entire community forever and 2) from that and the unfolding of this story, it was as if the gates of hell had opened on earth and evil "won". Part of the appreciation for Twin Peaks will always come from questions and mysteries, and our relentless pursuit of them, but it's certainly not just that. The series is also beautiful, captivating, creative, intelligent and very humorous. Even if all its mysteries were solved, I believe that we would continue to watch over and over again, contrary to what they say "without mysteries, without interest". It is a very wonderful world not to be visited again.

great ending... and a great feeling: mixture of joy and sadness just like Laura's laughter through tears in FWWM... one of the joyful moments were: "I"VE NEVER SEEN SURREALISM WITH BUDGET" (brilliant!) and the sadness due to the end of the show and your videos. Lynch is a dreamer was beautiful too (out of the box) and of course "got a light" logic - amazing! Season 4?... chances are slim... Lynch is 73 and as you said so many of the cast are dead (even though minor cast) that Lynch would need to really pull the story out of his ass to make it relevant to TP itself. even S3 was very distant from S1 & S2, it felt like stemming straight from FWWM. S3 left many of us with mixed feelings. i was so happy about it, but the season as whole felt undone and premature with really bad scenes like the whole drag with Dougie, dreadful scene with Mr. C arm wrestling the mob Boss and i felt simply betrayed with the climax of Bob beaten into pieces with the green glove... but we got rewarded with epic episode 8, Woodsmen teleport mechanics, Mitchum Brothers and of course the Teapot, so i'm not sure if i want S4, but yeah, fuck yeah! or (I agree) any Lynch's new project. Thank you, Matt, for all the videos, you broaden up the TP universe for me and i am sure for many others, you made it more beautiful and tastier for us. Special thanks for Jumping man, you probably don't remember, but we shared some theories of him in the comments. thank you, it's really hard to let go of TP world...

In “The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer” the young Laura receives a horse, named Troy, for her birthday. A white horse if I remember correctly. It’s been many years since I read the book. It was written by Jennifer Lynch, David Lynch‘s daughter. At that time I thought the it’s represented her lost childhood innocence. David Lynch himself recounted a scene in a French documentary about a slaughterhouse, where a majestic white horse was butchered and it’s blood collected in a box. It left him very disturbed. In the end, I’ve always thought Twin Peaks boils down to, the story of an abused girl, who tried her best to cope, her death, and the aftermath.
