Corn Pone Flicks

It's episode 10, which is the number of completion. A year after the conclusion of the most long-belated third television season in history, CPF examines the short-and-yet-somehow-also-long-lived phenomenon of Twin Peaks.

Thanks, though I've been considering starting over with a new one just for these film essays to see if it might stand a better chance. This one has been here for ten years, and has been mostly ignored until last week. It's weird. At the very least, I do want to re-upload the existing reviews, as I've patched all of them up in one way or another...the compression on the dark scenes on this one nearly ruins it.

Just a quick note: I think that the reason for the sudden uptick in viewership is that, for some reason, Google decided to feature one of your videos in the "recommended" ones for certain viewers (like me). I could not tell you why, but I'm thankful. I think you deserve more subscriptions and I sincerely hope they explode from here. I can see what kind of work you put into your videos and I think that deserves some recognition. If I had one criticism (and it is very much meant to be constructive!) it's that your audio could use some improvement. A little too much room presence. But that's a quibble. What really matters is the content itself, and that's very solid. I hope you meet with every encouragement.

Oh, I know. I recently got a lavalier mic which I've used for the last two videos, which sounds so much better. I recently got a new camera, which has meant slowly replacing all the accessories, such as lenses, the microphone, etc. The room I record in has the worst ring to it, and no amount of EQ could get rid of it.

Really? I thought generally most were pretty positive on it, at least amongst those I've seen. I feel like at this point, if you're watching something directed by Lynch you should really be expecting to put in a bit of effort. The only people I would expect to be caught off-guard would be those who tuned in without knowing anything about what they were about to see, i.e. all those people who bailed after the first two episodes.

I really get the feeling that a lot of the songs were written with the show events specifically in mind. I'm working on a video explaining the whole Audrey situation, and how it's largely summed up in the Eddie Vedder song that plays when she comes to the Roadhouse.
@toddbottv
@toddbottv 5 жыл бұрын
Corn Pone Flicks so glad to see someone else pick up on the songs - so many of them contain lyrics that mirror almost exactly events from the show. For example, Sharon van Etten one always hit me as being sung from Coopers point of view, being trapped in Dougies life... very intentionally chosen, and seeing you place some of them directly over their corresponding moments was really awesome 👏

@MarvinFalz
@MarvinFalz 4 жыл бұрын
@@toddbottv I had picked up on it, but I have never listened to all the lyrics, which I will do the next time I revisit the Return. I have a feeling that not only were the songs written with the events of the show in mind, but the whole show was written with season 3 probably being the last season in mind. The Chromatics sing about "the last time" in episode 2 as the first performers in the Roadhouse and then there's the "number of completion." Even the Carre Page segment is somehow a closing statement, though the ending feels unclosed. The great thing about stories are that you can always find new ones, and especially Twin Peaks is a universe so rich it should be possible to continue where season 3 left off. I wonder lately if an "unofficial season 4" could be made possible by fans of the show, as in a fan film like "Queen of Hearts" and "Laura Palmer."

Nice. There has always been something slightly magical about Lynch World. This video captures that world nicely. Even when it's maddening and frustrating, I like visiting it. I hope there is more Twin Peaks to come, and if there is, I know it will be enigmatic, and raise at least as many questions as it answers. I was not disappointed with the way season 3 ended, but rather awestruck. With the last episode, Lynch pulled off an amazing tour-de-force: good and bad Coopers were integrated - a realistic, nuanced person, at last. Same with Laura. She could not have suffered what she did and remain angelic and pure. They were both wounded but trying to redeem themselves, like us all. To paraphrase Rustin Cole, time is a flat circle. Lynch dared tell the truth, dressed in the artifice of nostalgia and innocence. THAT is art in its highest form.
@Corn_Pone_Flicks

I think what separates art from mere craftsmanship is whether or not you're still thinking about it after the experience is over. I've spent more time thinking about Twin Peaks than nearly any other show (even True Detective, awesome that it is).

Mr Pone, I went back down the TP rabbit hole last year and I think Twin Peaks The Return just may be my single favorite piece of art by anyone. I just wanted to relay that among the dozens (if not hundreds) of YT TP videos I spent time watching, your analysis is by far the most astute, thoughtful and insightful (not to mention hilarious. Actually, I guess I did mention it, but I digress). I keep coming back to your videos, and now I’m starting to feel a season 3 rewatch coming up as the weather gets colder. I know that you make your videos on your time, and I respect that immensely. I just wanted to state that I look forward to whatever your next project may be, and I keep hope that sometime during the roughly 10 to 40 years I probably have left to go on this dying planet, you will find reason to revisit the parallel universe of Twin Peaks with your unique brand of film theory. On the log lady's performance: when St Elsewhere went off the air, instead of the usual Mimsie the cat meow, they showed Mimsie laying on his side with tubes attached to a monitor which flatlines. Mimsie dies for real shortly afterwards. In the regard to everything being a dream - that was St. Elsewhere's ending. Just a loop-to-loop coincidence.
@Corn_Pone_Flicks
@Corn_Pone_Flicks 6 жыл бұрын
I always thought that the St. Elsewhere ending was just unabashedly silly as a way to end the show, just a "gotcha!" moment that was just there to mess with people and didn't add anything to the story. With something like Mulholland Drive, the dream is crucial to understanding the character and her motives, inner life, etc. In other words, not there to be a gimmick. But for Lynch, I get the feeling that he regards life itself as a dream of sorts.

In short, KZbin's algorithm is biased towards newer channels. This one is ten years old...I uploaded a bunch of short films I'd made with friends back in the 90s, then it sat dormant for years, because we weren't making anything new. By the time I started making things solo, the channel was basically being disregarded by the sorting algorithm. Also, it's not monetized, so KZbin makes no money from me, which also de-prioritizes the channel.

rather than comparing the doppelganger to the padishah emperor i'd think of it this way: cooper is paul atreides in Dune, and the doppelganger is paul atreides the tyrant from Dune Messiah. this is particularly apt because if Lynch had made Dune Messiah (as was originally planned) we would have seen Kyle McLachlan portray both versions of paul.

@@Corn_Pone_Flicks In the offchance you never got around to looking it up, Lain's a phenomenal cyberpunk anime series from the late '90s, all thirteen half-hour eps of which are available here for free via the legit distributor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmrOinR7rrude7s It's set in the present day (though with tech that's in some ways slightly futuristic) and has an often quiet, abstract, dreamy, and psychologically rich tone, somewhat in the vein of Satoshi Kon's own Lynchian Paranoia Agent series and Paprika film, if you know those, though it predates (and likely influenced) both. From what I've seen of your taste based on browsing videos here and text film reviews on the CPF site, I'd highly rec you check it out sometime, whether or not it leads to any analyses. Also as a personal aside, I went down a bit of a CPF rabbit hole after coming across your most recent TP video this morning and straight up just had a solid cry at the end of this one - many thanks for such strong, thoughtful work. Very much looking forward to future installments.

Oh wow. Great great great (did I say great?) video. It was entertaining and the soundtrack was terrific and apt. Most importantly you hit all the main ideas and the spirit of Lynch. You did not over explain or over analyze... which would be utterly un-Lynchian, but somehow people do. You left it a thing of poignancy and beauty, which is what I think Lynch wants his work to be. I have to rewatch it and watch more Lynch now. Can I quit my job?
