This symbol is not just a representation of the Great Horned or Pygmy owl (Giant and Dwarf). When viewed upside-down it represents the secret society "Woodman of the World." Its abbreviation: WOW. Yes, this is the meaning of the phrase "Wow Bob Wow" and it is why there is a Woodman in the scene above the Convenience Store.

Are you sure? I've always assumed that the woodman in the convenience store is the piece of Sam Lanterman that didn't remain in Margaret's log.

Yes, just my own theory. What you've said may still be true though. I have pictures of old elaborate Woodman of the World headstones at a graveyard in Riverside, California and carved in the stone, across the top of the headstone, is a log the same size and design as the Log Lady's.

I always thought the Woodsman guy in the convenience store was more of a general spectre that represented the mystical spookiness of the woods/great outdoors rather than a specific person, but David Lynch for one would probably want us to embrace both interpretations simultaneously (the other being that it's the Log Lady's husband).
