Thought this might be interesting to share: in the past year, I've been fortunate enough to meet Kyle MacLachlan at a wine event in Hollywood AND David Lynch at a book signing for his new book. Curious about this very topic of what Laura whispered, I asked Kyle the question: was there an actual line of dialogue that was whispered, or was it gibberish? Kyle told me it was just gibberish. So, assuming he was being honest, we know Sheryl Lee didn't say anything discernible to Kyle. When I met Lynch, I knew better than to ask him WHAT was said, because of course that's not his MO (modus operandi). So I asked him "do you have in your mind exactly what Laura whispered into Cooper's ear in that scene in season 3?" and with ZERO hesitation Lynch said "absolutely" while looking into my eyes. So... while not knowing what Sheryl Lee's response is, I'm guessing this is something Lynch alone has the answer to, and not even the actors know.

If you remember, in season 1 she whispered name of her killer, thus answering the central question of seasons 1 & 2. What is the question of season 3? "What year is it?". So, IMO she whispered to him about the time loop thing.

I think the question was confused on Cooper's part. It's not about when but where with where being the alternate universe known as our reality. Instead of time travel it was parallel universe travel but he didn't realize it initially.

I suspect the whispering scene was a way for Lynch to give the audience a clue regarding how vital listening is to the world of Twin Peaks. He has mentioned many times that there are multiple clues in the soundtrack. That leads me to think that it is not what Laura whispers that is important, but the fact that Cooper failed to listen carefully and ended up going wildly astray as a result. The same can be said for when the Fireman gave his messages at the very start. The clue Lynch was giving us was if do not listen, we will miss so many important details which will help us understand this series. Later we see the Fireman show Andy various images and sounds which give him direct and clear instructions without a single word. Andy immediately 'becomes' the old Cooper in his actions.

I think she says, you killed me, you ALWAYS killed me. Meaning, time loops around and events always unfold in a way in which Cooper brings Laura to her doom as a sacrifice to destroy Judy. Watch the whole series including the film 3 times in a row and you will start to get the same idea.

Lynch has already stated in 2017 if there was another season it’d have to be 7 years later. So I think that’s implying if he can do it at 79 and finish the production he will do a second return season to the return and that will be most likely the last thing he does.

I can't help but wonder if the answer is as simple as "My father killed me." Cooper was, long ago, dreaming of this event that someday would happen to him, and we're now seeing the actual event instead of the dream. Cooper's reaction might have been surprise after having genuinely forgotten after a quarter-century in the lodge. But I do agree that it was Lynch's intent to turn Laura back into a mystery once more. And if the final episode's final scene didn't make the idea that "you can't go home again" literal enough for everyone to grasp, nothing would.

I think she mirrored the first dream-whisper by telling Coop that this time, it was he who killed her (by tossing her into Odessa? Or dragging her to the non-Palmer house?). She's not bothered, it was one thing or another; but Coop is, as usual, way behind the count.

My other thought on the matter was that she might have told him, "We live inside a dream." The look on his face as she's whispering is quite similar to the close-up of his face that's dissolved over the Sheriff's Dept. scene in episode 17, which finally ends with that line.

I share some people's view that Laura tells him that he has never left the Red Room and that all we have seen in this series took place there, in form of a dream (Cooper's ?), game, fantasy or else. And he will never leave it either, no matter what he tries. Cooper's facial expression during the end credits (apparently the same scene as in Episode 2 (Series 3) after Laura kissed him) speaks volumes - that's the way you look when you are being told an unexpected and unpleasant truth that you find hard to believe.

Interesting, I think that as well. To add to the discusssion, I think Cooper it's stuck in a loop, where he's remembering everything before getting into the Red Room. Try watching FWWM and the International Pilot in this order after S3.

He doesn't leave the red room until right after the opener of ep18, as evidenced by Mr C burning up and Cooper walking through the curtains. He dreamed that he was 'stuck' in Dougie for a time before then, and shocked himself out of it, consequently 'returning to Twin Peaks' and defeating Bob in the most obviously unsatisfying, ridiculous way. He then endeavors to save a dead girl via time-travel, cancelling the original purpose of the show (who killed Laura Palmer). So when he _really leaves_ the Red Room (and Cooper's Red Room dream ends) there is no plot left to correct. Since all of the seasons of TP are _also_ a meta-narrative dream, whatever Cooper dreams has an effect, just as it has since s1 ep03. So by the end of S3 ep17 _It is as if TP never happened_ , yet in s3 ep18 there Cooper and Carrie/Laura are in our reality, wondering what year it is and why nobody knows anything about what he's doing there.

agreed... speculation they are merely slices of life indicating the general decay of one of the timelines and how the youth seem lost... others speculated they operate as different psycho analytical elements of a fractured Audrey mind... each scene representing some deeper representation... ?

I don’t think there really was a point to any of them, other than perhaps the conversation between Tina’s daughter and the other woman about Billy, as that is linked to Audrey’s arc. The rest of those Roadhouse scenes didn’t seem to have any real relevance to anything. Just little depictions of life among random strangers. Typical shit you see and hear at bars in any town. The itchy girl with the rash made me want to puke.

@@chrisjfox8715 you know, the jerry horne scenes were kind of interesting if you think about it like this: we know for a fact that the horne brothers were involved in some shady stuff (one eyed jack's for starters) and their family has a long history in twin peaks. ashley judd's character, who seems to be smitten with his brother ben, goes home to a husband suffering with cancer. that kind of parallels with the more or less 'corrupt' depiction of the folks who hang out at the roadhouse. horne has SOME connection to the corruption in twin peaks' underbelly, at least historically, and the woman smitten with him goes home to a husband whose body is corrupted by a disease and she feels that he is trying to make her feel guilty about it. so you've got jerry spending his time roaming around the vast woods, the mysterious woods, seemingly affected by his life choices while at the same time his brother's love interest is being made to feel guilty for ignoring corruption. also, and this is my favorite brain teaser part about it, judd's character's last name is paige, the same last name that alternate timeline laura palmer has... carrie paige. what's that all about, you think? i know i'm late with all this, but i just rewatched the return, so i'm kind of on a rant.

@@drunkenma5ter841 Jerry definitely found a portal and traveled to Idaho. It would be interesting to catalog all the portals and the numbers associated with them. It is interesting that they are 3D, as in having (x, y, z) coordinates; many are high up in the air. How long have these portals been there? Does the portal at the Palmer house predate the house? It is pretty handy to be an owl (or able to fly or levitate) when you pop out of a portal a hundred feet above the ground.

I miss this show, I'd welcome a Second Coming of Twin Peaks: The Return, it was just such glorious TV. It did have a negative impact on my other shows that I watched. Like Game of Thrones, for instance, when I went back to that, it all felt rather amateurish compared to The Return. Even now, one year later, I still contemplate things we saw in The Return.

I hate to be that person, but the Fire and Ice books are so much more involved and there are so many mysteries to be solved in the Game of Thrones universe. Like what truly happened to Catelyn Stark. Won't say anything more. HBO did a good job but skipped out on some important story lines.

peppermill81 I get you, mate, I am "A Song of Ice and Fire," Book reader too. Well, the first three books anyhow, I've yet to buy the last two. I am currently on the third book, 95% of the way through. HBO did a good job up until they ran out of books. The last season of it, while very action-packed was ultimately a poorly written mess and it felt extremely rushed. Like D&D were just wanting the story to end. It is a shame that they went from taking their time, develop the characters, as was in the books, to suddenly throwing logic out the window and dropping a lot of what had been previously been set up. Dan and Dave get a lot more credit than they deserve, I think. The show when it first aired was like nothing TV audiences had ever seen before (you could maybe argue Lost), in terms of scope, huge cast and ambition, which deserves to be lauded but one thing that stands out to the point it is extremely jarring is the tonal shift and the writing overall. I don't blame them, GRRM is a proper writer and is leagues above anything Dan and Dave will likely ever write. I admire them for taking longer with the last season of the show but I feel like we are heading for more of the same with Season 8, disappointing writing and inconsistent characters and character motivation held barely together with Fan Service. I'll happily be proved wrong.

Also, I agree with an earlier poster about you doing an analysis of the Roadhouse scenes - that would be fabulous (but no pressure). And finally, someone should organize a TP conference where people present and debate various theories and we all sit around with endless pie and coffee. Your commenters sound like a great bunch.

Geoffrey. Your videos have always been amazing, all the way through the run of the Return. I was very happy that I discovered you on KZbin early on. Your recaps were the best among all of them but I have to tell you, honestly, the last three that you have put up have just blown them all away. The way you put stuff together now, a year later, it's just amazing and you touch on a lot of things I was thinking about at the time the Return was airing. Another great video! Here are my 2 cents: I really believe that, at the end, when Laura whispers to Cooper, she is telling him that they are eternally stuck in this cycle. In many ways it is like Elizabeth in the video game Bioshock. No matter what alternate dimension Elizabeth goes too, there is always a lighthouse, there is always a man, and there is always a city. Likewise in Twin Peaks, there is always a troubled Laura, there is always an agent Cooper, and there is always the city of Twin Peaks. No matter what alternate reality Cooper and Laura enter, no matter what rights they wrong, the cycle will always continue. There will always be a troubled Laura. There will always be a Cooper who is monomaniacally trying to "find" Laura and "help" her. There will always be a Laura in the "waiting room" of the Black Lodge whispering into Cooper's ear, telling him that they are stuck in this never-ending cycle. And then, the cycle begins again . . . never ending. At the very end of Season 3 Episode 18, we see Laura whispering into Cooper's ear. The only difference this time is the camera angle. We see his full face this time while she whispers. We watch the look of pure horror come over his face when he realizes that this will never end. That's my interpretation, anyway.

Allen Gumm, here is my take. At the end of FWWM, we see Cooper still in the Lodge Waiting Room as if he has been expecting Laura the whole time. Laura is of the White Lodge. The Angel is there as a symbol of the White Lodge. The Angel's appearance means Laura no longer has to experience "garmonbozia" (i.e. Pain and suffering) and her part in this cycle is complete. I think Laura is happy that the garmonbozia this cycle is over. Laura is also happy to see the Angel, as the Angel shows that the White Lodge is still connected to Laura and it is "watching" over her. If I remember correctly, we only see the "Waiting Room" between the lodges (i.e. the red room with the chevron flooring). We never see the inside of the White Lodge. I am not sure if "The Arm" is in the Black Lodge or not. But, maybe because it is the waiting room entities from both Lodges can interact there. Either way, Cooper's presence in that scene shows that he has been part of the cycles for a long time. He reached her dreams before she was killed. He waited for her arrival once she died. All of these things happened before the Dale Cooper we know and love had even set foot in Twin Peaks or had been assigned the case.

I’ll be truly amazed if that happens. I’m really not sure where it could possibly go from the finale of The Return. No matter which theory you accept... whether it’s “Laura won”, “Cooper won”, “Judy won”, or “Nobody won”... there just really isn’t any room for continuation. Besides, look at how many of the key actors have passed away, and how a few others are so far up in age now that they probably won’t be with us much longer... then take into account that another season would take about 5 years to make. Those are not very good odds in favor of a fourth season. However, it is David Lynch. He has been known to pull rabbits from hats and turn water into wine from time to time. We’ll see. I’m not going to hold my breath though.

@@Brewzerr "no room for continuation"? i don't know how you figure that when lynch could just pick up where he left off (if he chose to). what about the actors that are still alive starting with kyle and sheryl? the reason i don't think it can go on is because TM and old age are eating away at lynch's mind. as it is, season 3's story was left unfinished because he wasted an unbelievable amount of time he wasted on extraneous subplots.

@@plasticweapon I remember people saying the same thing (about Lynch) back in the 80's when Blue Velvet was newly released. Today that movie is hailed as a masterpiece and a classic and gets nothing but praise. The word "genius" is often bandied about, but believe me... at the time it was an extremely different story and the general reaction was very negative. It's very easy to say Lynch has "lost it" or whatever, but I have a feeling that 20 or so years from now people will be looking back on The Return in much the same way they look back on Blue Velvet today. I'm not saying it's his best work, but I do think The Return is worthy of prime Lynchian standards. As far as any notion of a 4th season goes, sure... he could pick back up where he left off, which was what? Lights out, end of everything, Laura screams and it all goes black? How do you even pick up from that?

Cooper was only allowed out when his doppelgänger comes back in. laura told him to go out, then the arm’s doppelgänger double crossed him. I don’t believe at that point Cooper left the lodge. He woke up in an alternate reality of Twin Peaks, a Twin Peaks which doesn’t resemble anything of the original. Remember the switch glitch at the diner? The glitches on the reflection of the characters. Even the ending, time has stopped. Cooper got out into an alternate world, he then messed the timeline by saving Laura. But he woke up in the present, the real Twin Peaks! Thus laura cannot exist, she went into non-existence. The current Twin Peaks world has the real world owners of the house and everything else. I believe laura whispered to Cooper that she doesn’t exist. But he didn’t remember, which is why he went to save her.

The slow onset of Cooper's confusion is awful to watch, but it's tragic in the grand sense of Greek tragedy, almost like his confidence (especially when it comes to messing with time itself) is too much and demands some kind of cosmic retribution.

Awesome video, thank you very much. You know, I really like what you've been doing with your videos, it's a very Lynchy thing to do - make the viewers think that you've uncovered something factual about the story, lead them up to it for somewhat ten minutes, and leave them with (instead of some story revelation) an unexpected, interesting and surprising insight into Lynch's artistic language and methods. I mean, like, every time I watch your videos, I'm sitting there, waiting for you to say that you noticed a little detail that I didn't see that lead you to understand that Laura whispered exactly this and that, and thus you know now which timeline is where and whatnot, but instead I just get itchy and yearning for more videos. This makes me wonder if Judy was somehow in the house during the final scene, but also had forgot about the other reality where Laura exists or had given up on looking for her because it seemed hopeless. Or maybe Laura was put into a reality that exists in the past, so that she had not been made/sent to earth or Leland and Sarah had not reproduced therefore she would be unknown under the guise of "carrie paige" in this past, or alternate reality that exists in the past. That could be why Coop asked what year it was at the last second. We have seen Judy can move into a body. I don't think it would be a stretch to say they could switch bodies just like bob. Not to mention the woman who used to own the house is a known spiritual entity. Add to that the subtle hint of something literally unknown being inside the house is demonstrated when the person greeting Coop and "carrie" is speaking to someone who we never seen or "hidden". Not trying to say that who she is speaking too is Judy itself, but it is an unknown factor in which I believe is like a metaphor. I think coop was supposed to remember everything when he switches dimensions and/or goes to the past, or he was not supposed to meddle at all. When he reads the note left by diane in the final episode he, in my opinion, has no idea who richard and linda are and is bewildered. But Coop is so determined to continue his misson his mind is able to graps bits and pieces. He seems to not notice that the hotel is different, but seems to look at his car for a second. Even the way he says he is in the fbi during the next few scenes seems lackluster and not at all confident. We all know that would not be for a lack of effort in the case of Kyle MacLachlan so to me that could also be a hint. Coop eventually leads Laura to what he thinks will be the answer only to bring her directly to Judy, whom upon immediately seeing "carrie paige" most likely just sees a person. But Coop being who he is drives the point home with no regard for anything but completing the mission. Judy then says Lauras name remembering as she is questioning it herself. When Laura screams I believe Coop realized what he has done and also remembered that laura had whispered to him insctructuons not to lead her to the house, but far too late. On a sidenote maybe the hint given by the fireman two birds with one stone also has some meaning here, and cooper was supposed elimate the two birds, Judy and Bob, by taking himself out of the equation so he doesnt lead Laura back to them. That would really make Coops journey tragic because it gives this obsessive searching for the truth side of him a very negative spin, which is one of his most endearing qualities. The have been times before where the fireman has tried to stop coop or tell him to stop. Their relationship is far from perfect. Hell he left Coop on the floor to die, still made him pay for his milk and didnt even call 911. Gardin Nomes and my theories here could also explain the look on Coops face when Laura whispers to him. I believed he would be crushed with grief and confused as to why Laura would want to remain in an alternate reality/past and not want to be returned or "saved". To be honest I thought it was weird when Coop said he was taking her "home". What home? The one where she is beaten and raped and a potentially even more evil spirit resides in her mom? Into the future where her dad killed himself and she had ruined the lives of everyone around and could only exist as an anomaly only to be potentially found by Judy again as Jusy resides in Sarah Palmer? He seems like this Knight in shining armor when he says the words, but it seems so out of place to me. Laura has no home. I think people forget that Carrie Paige seems to be far from a saint. The was a man rotting on her couch and she had not a care in the world that an fbi agent saw him. That speaks volumes to me about her character. For someone to act that way they not only would be considered evil, but also extremely disassociated with reality to not know that you do not show the fbi a dead body or not care. I'm confused as to what good may have come by Cooper returning her to anywhere for that matter.

It seems Judy is not a character so much as "an extreme negative Force", per the info from Cole. The Experiment is not Judy, either. It has more to do with Garland Briggs' disembodied head floating through space whispering "Judy", and the monkey saying the same at the end of FWWM, than anything to do with "who". Hence Mr. C's frustration with Jeffries' replies when he demands "WHO is Judy!!"

I'm still of the opinion that the lodge entities sent Cooper out of the lodge to retrieve Laura for Jao De; Laura was rescued by "the angels" at the end of FWWM & hidden in another reality. I don't think Cooper was aware he was being used in this way, but whatever "Laura" whispered to him was disturbing. I don't know why people seem to have forgotten that Mike & the Arm are malevolent entities. Just because they help Cooper in the Return doesn't mean they are "good". I think the Giant was trying to help him & save him from the machinations of the lodge entities; he showed Cooper that the sound played from the record player was an indicator of their presence, perhaps hoping this would help Cooper detect/avoid them. If I'm right, it's a dark ending; Cooper found Laura & took her directly to Jao De. Based on the way Jao De (Sarah) flipped out & destroyed Laura's picture we can only imagine what happens next. PS: When we see Laura & Cooper seemingly happy together in the lodge in FWWM I think we are looking at doppelgangers.

gardin Nome That does make sense, whenever you see characters in the Lodge smiling or acting 'happy,' it was Leland' s doppelganger, Cooper' s doppelganger, the Arm, BOB, etc. Real Cooper always looked concerned and intent on what he was witnessing in there. (though I think he very briefly smiled when Laura kissed him in the original series) The angels scene was always a bit confusing to me, as religion never really comes into play in the show. It has to be some kind of illusion created by the Lodge or something...

I personally loved what Lynch did with Dale Cooper in the return. I liked it because it harkens back to the old saying-" you'll only miss something, till' it's gone", that's why I like it, cuz' Dale Cooper is pretty unstoppable in the original run of Twin Peaks-" but Lynch probably thought or said- is he really"? So when Dale comes back in episode 15, there's a massive payoff because you see Dale/Dougie fumble for 14 episode's, and also you take Dale as a character for granted.

My theory is that the whisper is more than just "familiar territory". I think it's meant to actually be that same moment from season 1 just recreated for modern time. It's established that time does not function in the Black Lodge like it does in the human world so when Cooper goes into his dream in season 1, 25 years pass in the Black Lodge. My guess is that when Cooper became trapped at the end of season 2 and 25 years passed in the human world, he would ultimately end up exactly where his dream had transported him in season 1 (via Black Lodge time) only we're observing said event through human world time. Meaning Cooper woke up in season 1 right before Laura got sucked away by Judy and the curtain flew open in season 3.

Jesus Christ, what an amazing breakdown. Twin Peaks was one of the most watched shows on television during its first season, but viewership unfortunately fell after Laura Palmer‘s killer was revealed. I can totally picture a conversation between Lynch and the executives at Showtime about hiding what Laura says at the end of Return, and that possibly being a factor in whether or not the Lynch would make the show. If you did find out, it would take the mystery, and the beauty of Twin Peaks, away. As much as I would like to know what Laura Palmer said, knowing that takes away the mystery. And that’s the point. I can’t imagine we’ll get another season, but I am really hoping we do. Can never get enough of David Lynch stuff. Thanks for your vid bro!

Really good video , well researched. As much as I like Lynch's works , I can't help but feel that he just puts together these amazing stories that have no actual discernible endings. He builds to a certain point and then - wham! Reality shifts, identities change etc.etc. it makes it difficult for me to invest too heavily in any of his work

That's part of the power though. He's so good at making them experiential up to that point, that when those shifts occur, you're as unmoored as the characters--you feel for them, and you come away with an appreciation for the fact that sometimes, often, even, life really does feel like those abstract and alarming shifts. It's not narrative realism, but it's a mode that helps capture some very real feelings about being alive in the world that would be difficult to articulate any other way.

In the first scene of the first episode of The Return, the Giant says something like: "It is in our house now. It all cannot be said aloud now". If that is the thing that cannot be said aloud, then I guess it could be whispered, so I think that Laura whispered to him that very same thing: "It is in our house now", alluding to Jao Dei, or something like that. I mean, we know that there is something wrong about that house in the ending scene, so... I don't know, I cannot link all of that to make some sense. Love your videos by the way :D

TP (The Return) can be seen as a show about existence and living outside of 'fearful secrets' - a discomfiting condition wherein one is not 'in-the-loop'. Disorientation/helplessness abounds amidst decay and unrelenting nihilism. It is quite a dysphoric allegory of modern times if not modern America. Laura's whisper to me is one of many 'fearful secrets' in the TP universe.

"It's in our house now" - then giving the exact clues regarding how to get to this pocket/reality dimension (depending on theory) to Coop. I think Coop knows what he is doing and the meeting with Giant might happen just prior to entrance to the Carrie Page's dimension - there's a conflict with the FBI badge on Coop's jacket though - during Fireman scene he hasn't got one, at final scene he has so.... Let's assume it happened earlier, no idea when though. There was a theory that Laura was a "bomb" to annihilate Judy/Judy's creation like matter and antimatter does. And last scene is when these two meet which annihilates whole world (dimension) along with everything inside. This matches to some extent but ignores the fact of Dream idea that has been mentioned too often by Lynch here to just ignore. Maybe the event of meeting Laura with Judy(we assume this is what is possesing Sarah [THEN SHE COULD BE LAURAS DOPPELGANGER TOO]) was the key to Laura to realize what her abusive father was doing to her, that whole TP was her dream, because "but who's the dreamer" ->"Laura is the one" . And the whole world of Twin Peaks was just one of these dreams you have more than one time, but always forgot them? But when you dream them again you feel familiar, but any detail vanishes just after you woke up? Thats why Carrie Page didnt recognize Coop because he actually existed only in the dream. Then she got a dead guy on her sofa, just after the destruction of BOB. Notice how TP perfectly reflected the Carrie's reality, she fought, she got him, finally. Notice the white horse on the shelf? Maybe it was the dead guy thing, he liked figurines of white horse, that always was connected to him hence the connection of white horse symbol to Bob/Judy. Then of course Judy is the name of place where Carrie is working, maybe hated abusive boss, maybe mean colleagues, she hates the job but she has to work to make ends meet. Maybe thats why Laura didnt die in the end - because "Laura" died when someone raped her (at this point lets skip if that was father/uncle/boyfriend figure) but just after destroying BOB she felt strong and that she got control, she faced her oppresor and killed him, she is alive again, she is master of her fate (even tho she will go to jail/she need to run now). Thats why when she finally realized what is happening she totally lost her sh*t and... something happened, world collapsed? Two worlds combined? We don't know. Because what the heck would you do if your dream come to you alive, in the flesh in the broad daylight? Just my few ideas, maybe someone can elaborate it better. Damn I'm late to work now.

When the Giant spoke to him, he says, "I understand" and left with Laura and Diane. AFTER they passed mile 430, THEN he got confused, this I think was because of the time loop. The Dopple-Dale arm-wrestling scene might be a slight nod to Psycho - in that there's a famous scene where Norman Bates is trying to dispose of a car (containing a body of course) in a peat bog, and there's this little moment where it looks like it won't sink. At that moment the audience is tense because it looks like the bad guy _won't_ get away with his murder; in other words, the audience is now sympathetically seeing things from the murderer's point of view instead of the victim's, which was Hitchcock's subversive and extremely insightful intention. The Dopple-Dale scene seems like Lynch and Frost's modern take on that idea, although it should be noted that in that scene it never looked like the 'bad guy' was about to fail in some way, so maybe not.

Just another thought: what about "The Return"? As in, why insist that it's called "Twin Peaks: The Return" rather than just "Season 3", because, as you mentioned, the show is called "Season 1" by Showtime? Who or what returned? Coop? Sarah? The Mother? The central mystery? Because in some ways, none of these people or things actually did return, depending on how you interpret what happens. Is this show really just a commentary on interpretation itself?

Great video, mate! What she whispered is the same as it ever was: "My father killed me". The mystery of 'Who Killed Laura' WAS the show. Solve this mystery, and the shows driving force is dead. Yet fans persist in insisting that something 'new' was said by a character _long dead_ . Therefore, the show goes on. Remember: B&W Cooper in ep01 listening to the Giant/Fireman replies "I understand" to his clues - clues that can _only_ be ascertained by a viewer that has _already seen_ The Return! This is Lynch's way, in crude B&W, of asserting Cooper's persona as an avatar of the audience member; the individual _investigator of mystery_ . WE the viewer(s) demanded ever-more mystery, and as the original story is over, we _have_ to be informed by Lynch in the form of puzzles/clues to be solved through decoding film language and abstracting further. Exposition is generally a narrative no-no for it violates the 'don't tell me, SHOW me' principle of film and all visual language. After all, a picture is worth (at least) 1,000 words.

Love your vids. I’m excited to watch cobra Kai, just to see your take on it. I think that Laura is telling him not to change the timeline, as no good comes from it. I think the whole dream inside a dream adds the ambiguity that would allow for any future series. Also leaving these two at the end and a different timeline allows flexibility of available cast members. I love to think of Cooper researching what has happened to everyone in the town of Twin Peaks since he messed with time in the forest.

When the original Twin Peaks aired I was only 14 years old. Everyone I knew was watching some show called 90210. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember TP competing with 90210 on Thursday nights, during the same time slot. I would love someone to fact check that for me, I'm going completely off of memory. Needless to say, I've been obsessed with this show since the airing and (maybe?) lost out on watching that teen, Beverly hills show. ZERO regrets at 42 years old. Still obsessed with Twin Peaks and David Lynch. Being an obsessive fan of the cult original, when season 3 came out I could hardly contain myself.

Have you considered the following simple explanation for what Mr C was looking for: - The symbol on the card is simply the head of the "evolution of the arm". - When Mr C locked his car into the garage, Jack's face reminded him of the head. - The monster in the box was the doppelganger of the the "arm". The cast name "experiment" may refer to some kind of experimentation with different kind of bodies.

Man, i just subbed. Ive been watching you for quite awhile though. Just kept forgetting to sub. You have some great ideas on what this all meant. I am now on my 6th run through the series. I never watched it before last year. When i heard they were making a new one i started watching and i gotta say man. Wow! After i watched the whole series the first time i got lots of my friends to watch it. I kind of forced it, but everyone I show it to loves it. One day my friend told me every time the credits in the first series roll and that picture of Laura popped up he said it felt like Lynch and Frost were saying "YOU DID IT! YOU KILLED LAURA!" And to be honest I wouldn't doubt that at all. In fact, I just told my brother I'm killing Laura Palmer for the 6th time with a new friend. What do you think of that theory? I think I've put together one very small piece of the puzzle...in terms of Audrey and Charlie's convos which you mentioned & how all the dialogue is related in a way. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but in their very first convo, I think the most important part is about "Chuck" being the one who told Audrey that Tina was the last person to see Billy. Charlie then goes on to tell her that Billy reported to the police that Chuck stole his truck but then dropped the charges when he got it back. From an earlier episode we see that Richard was driving a truck that hit the little boy and then later Andy is speaking to a man who is the owner of the truck. I believe that man is Billy. Bear with me, this will be long. We know now that Audrey is in a psychiatric hospital but I believe she's still very much emotionally attached to the people she loves. Obviously she was in love with Billy and loves Richard, her son. I think part of her psyche is aware of what's happening around her so on an emotional level she knows something terrible has happened to Billy (I'm guessing he's dead and that Richard was the one who killed him). It would make sense even that Richard would know Billy if his mother had been carrying on a LT affair with him so it's not that unusual to think that Richard might have borrowed his car. We saw what Richard did to Miriam, the only person who witnessed him hitting the little boy, he attacked her and left her for dead. So it's not at all a stretch to think that he would do the same to the owner of the truck itself. I think Billy called the police & reported the truck stolen just as Charlie said & then Richard came & threatened him. Obviously if he was seriously involved with Audrey he would've known how troubled Richard was and what he was potentially capable of and so would be scared if he threatened him. So "Chuck" in Audrey's mind(Renee's husband I believe?) Is a substitute for Richard who she probably can't bear to admit to herself is the one who actually hurt/killed Billy. And I think Charlie is symbolic of her conscience(along with being real life husband) trying to tell her the truth about what happened to Billy but she's fighting herself. Part of her wants to stay "asleep" to the truth(Charlie's repeated comments about being sleepy) and part of her is angry at herself for not being brave enough to face it. She even makes a comment about "Chuck" being "certifiable" which deep down she probably knows is what Richard is. Since time is being played with as well, I even think it's POSSIBLE that this was the event that made her lose her mind in the first place. I mean who knows how long Richard has been on the run? The other part about Tina being the last one to see Billy...I think Tina's a real person and got involved with Billy after Audrey (or possibly even overlapping). The girl who talks about her mom, Tina, having an affair with Billy, is her daughter. Oh another thing which makes me feel more sure the farmer is Billy is DKL doesn't want us to know his name. Notice how all of these people having all these conversations about other people we don't know all have names which we're told? I think it's b/c they don't matter. On the other hand when we first meet Richard we're not told his name. I'm not sure, it might be in the credits? But if so I think it's just Richard in the beginning, I don't think we're given his last name right away because obviously Horne is an extremely significant last name. I know in the subtitles his first scene just calls him "man". Anyway I think the reason why we're told some characters names & not others is because he doesn't want to give away too much about who certain characters are and since there's so much storyline around Billy, he's one of them. So yeah I think when Charlie calls Tina in that first scene w/ Audrey, he finds out what happened to Billy but Audrey's mind is creating a barrier so she won't have to know yet . Oh another thing that just struck me as interesting is in Audrey's dance scene at the Roadhouse, it gets interrupted by a man attacking another man for hitting on his wife, almost exactly reminiscent of the scene where the real Chuck attacks James for hitting on Renee. Anyway the rest of Audrey and Charlie's scenes are all very similar to the first as you know & I think deliberately maddening. Audrey is absolutely torturing herself with her guilt and desire to find Billy and save him from her son but deep down she knows it's too late & she's furious at herself. She might've just gone around in circles about it forever in her head but she finally has a moment of acceptance before the reality of what's happened to Richard now comes crashing down on her. Oh sorry last thing, before that the time glitch in the diner when someone asks if anyone has seen Billy(which I think is actually in the episode where Andy goes to meet him at 4:30 by "Jones'" and he doesn't show up). I still have a feeling that all this happened to Billy awhile ago and we're seeing what happens to Richard now as a result & that has something to do with the time glitch but I could be wrong about that. Regardless, Richard being electrocuted literally is a shock to Audrey's system, waking her up out of her ongoing dream/nightmare (but who is the dreamer?) about the past. I know this isn't even the topic of the video but all of that came to me on another viewing last night and I finally watched this video today after having it saved for awhile...so I hope it's cool I shared! And a big Thanks to anyone who actually read all that lol!

Anyone notice that the red curtains in The Return have noticeable horizontal lines in them... Not sure if it's a pattern or just fold-lines from how the curtains were stored. Seems to me that an art director on set would have noticed these lines and ironed them out... So that makes me think they are intentional. What could that mean? An alternate Red Room?

very late to this thread... obviously... but i just rewatched the return so here i am. you know, maybe i'm crazy but i never got too caught up in what she whispers to DC in this season. just the fact that she whispered something to him, the mystery of it, was enough for me. honestly i hope i never find out what she whispered to him, unless it turns out to be something even more mysterious. the scene of the young horne brothers, from the original series, being enthralled by the flashlight dance of their babysitter in silhouette has always been a moment that really stood out. in a way that one flashback scene kind of encapsulated the whole theme and tone of the series as succinctly as possible. it doesn't hurt that they're recalling this memory while locked up in a jail cell lol.

Right on. I totally agree that it is the idea of our expectations about life that is one theme of The Return. Possibly Lynch was addressing the Buddhist notions of impermanence/emptiness? Nothing ever stays the same for even an instant. Quantum Physics has shown this to be true. The state of our reality is ever changing. So many people seemed hurt and indignant that Lynch and Frost failed to deliver to them a replay of the things they enjoyed about the first two seasons. It was most definitely Lynch's intention to teach us a lesson about how we suffer when we expect life to fulfill our desires!
