Want to help support this channel? We've got new shirts, hats, hoodies, stickers and jackets right now. Every dollar you spend at www.fsmgarage.com goes right back into our project vehicles.
In Episode 187 of Mike Finnegan's Garage, we continue on with the build of our spankin-new 21ft long Eliminator Daytona jet boat. I've never driven one of these before but know several guys and gals who are hauling the meatloaf behind the wheel of the second shortest Daytona in the Eliminator lineup. This time we are adding accessories to the 427ci Texas Speed LSX, including some mirror image turbochargers from Nelson Racing Engines. I've included links below to the specialty tools and parts used in this video.

For everyone who wishes we swapped the turbos and pointed the discharge tubes upward instead of down at the bottom.... we did try this and it simply wasn't possible due to the fact that I want the turbos tucked in closely to the intake manifold and valve covers. In the layout you guys are envisioning, the discharge tubes point right into the side of the throttle body, leaving zero room to plumb them. When we show you the next video installment of the build you see what we mean and how we came up with a really clean and compact way to plumb the cold side of the turbo system. As always, thanks for the comments and input. I am always learning from you guys. :)

The second stage of your trimming the 90 would have been good for that look, but I think tucking them in will have more benefits and it looks slick. 👌

Flip them around 180 and have the intakes at the back or fed from a ram air intake above the engine. That would mean you could rotate the outlet housings to the top and possibly gain the space you need whilst keeping everything tight as possible. Also means you're less likely to get ya mullet eaten by a hungry turbo too.

I’ve been screaming at the tv for three minutes, “USE THE OTHER TURBO!” If the compressor outlet comes off the top directed towards the engine, you can lower the turbo even more and have a small/strong tubing piece connecting it to the throttle body.

Switch the turbos from side to side so the charge air is coming out of the top side not the bottom it will allow the turbo to sit lower without having funky angles on the charge tubes.

I'm not an expert by any means but I think the shorter and straighter the intake air pipe is the better off you'll be. So you would want to switch the turbos side to side so they have a straight shot into the throttle body as opposed to running two 90s on each side to get it to the same spot. Just run through all the options before you finalize it. Even take pictures and compare them side by side to see what fits your ideal look. I'm a touch OCD too so that's why I mentioned this

I would put those charge tubes coming from up and straight to throttle body with clocking the turbos exhaust towards center so you can make single exhaust pipe coming from center. So the turbos would sit in little angle charge inlets pointing bit to sides of the boat.

Okay Mr. Finnegan, and Mr. Newbern, this suggestion will help you out immensely on your fabrication jobs. I'm not a fabricator of turbo piping, but I was a sheet metal worker for many years before becoming a mechanical superintendent. Go to your local home depot in the tool area generally by the welding section they have, and you'll see laser levels of various kinds. Find the ones that give you horizontal and vertical lines which can be independent of each other, are together at same time. As long as you have a fixed position that is level, and some even have leveling adjustments on them to allow for uneven surfaces. Then put some tape on the hull so that you have a constant position to place the laser for future references, and then you have a method to measure your angles, verify that your level, and if you have two layers you don't have to have a hard fixed position to try and measure to one side at a time. All you have to do is measure that the laser's are equally spaced apart set your turbos in place according to your laser on each side, and say you want the distance between each to your Y fitting. Just measure between the two turbos and subtract the width of the fitting itself and your done with that. You can also use the two side by side set at the different elevations to determine your angles needed and the distance between the center lines. Hope this helps

You can make transfer screws by cutting the head off a bolt, chucking it up in a drill and sharpening it on a grinder. It’s not hardened steel like the ones Finn used but they still work. Grade 8 is usually hard enough to transfer a mark on mild steel. Works great on firewalls, fiberglass & wood.

In my early childhood I was around Howlin Wolf a lot. One time Howlin Wolf said, "When me and Muddy are gone, ain't gonna be many real blues-men left". One of the fellows asked, "What about B.B. King?" Howlin Wolf thought for a moment and answered, "It's possible". The guy said, "He sure can play that guitar". Howlin Wolf (visibly perturbed) said, "Look I said it was possible, do you want a receipt?" The guy answered, "No Sir". Your monument answer reminded me of that conversation.

I'm betting I could make that work in a truck, just like it is. Then just route the exhaust so that two pipes are side by side on an angle up high and above the roofline to keep it out of the cab....Thanks Mike, great idea!

The 'oil outlet' (aka 'turbo drain') is actually transporting oil and a considerable amount of gas that leaks through the turbo. Always use a much larger pipe on the drain side to handle the gas otherwise pressure can build up and oil can migrate into the exhaust and intake.

I would mount both of the compressor cover outlets directly to the Y adaptor on the throttle body with v bands and then plumb the exhaust inlet to the exhaust manifold. They would be both sitting on an angle behind the engine and would look kinda cool. You could do a nice big 2 into 1 for the exhaust as well.

You are going to want to seal the holes you drilled in the plywood bulkhead. One option is to just give the wholes a coat of epoxy to keep water intrusion out, a better way is to over size drill the holes and sleeve them with tubing that is glued in so you can run the bolts for CO2 bracket in and out without wearing through epoxy, back into wood. Water is terribly destructive to composites. The wood provides the core for the laminate composite the thicker the wood or core the stiffer the piece without having to add skin thickness. Think a phone book vs a single sheet of paper. The water will get into the open pores of the bolt holes even with the bolts installed and rot out the wood, you will be surprised how far it will allow the water to migrate . I used to do destructive testing for the largest composite core manufacturer in US . Worked with almost all boat manufacturers. Water intrusion into laminate is a very common issue. Just a suggestion love the show.

Since this is a family boat, you could put an insulated rail on the engine itself as a structure for it, therefore making it removable. 26:36 could be a U as you look at the engine, going around the engine to the turbos. That way they can grab the rail and be secure from all aspects.

In pc builds the heat after shutting the power off still can cause damage and increased wear to the components so there are devices that allow for the fans to run at reduced speed for up to 10 minutes after shut down. Pretty awesome to think that the same principle is used in multiple industries.

He is building the exact boat at motor combination that I have literally been dreaming about for at least 6-8 years. I even have all the parts and written down and saved. The Eliminator Daytona 21' is the perfect hull design, the perfect materials are used and the perfect length is used to keep the weight to a minimum and still be plenty strong enough to handle the kind of horsepower that this motor is going to produce. I cannot wait to watch this badass boat and motor being put together. What a freaking dream this is to see this amazing project come to life. The only difference is I would have chosen a 632 cubic inch motor to be the basic motor concept. Hell yes I am so excited right now that my hands are shaking. I predict 140 plus mph , maybe even 150 if the pump can hang in there with such massive amounts of power be hooked up to it. Either way it will accelerate at such ferocious Force that it might expose the driver/ passenger to g-forces that could be a limiting factor of pushing the boat to it's all out limits.

Everyone is saying to flip the turbos so the charge outlet is on top, but I think you could build a beautiful charge pipe by leaving the outlets down low. In my mind I have something that resembles the ram horn manifolds of an early Vette left in polished or raw stainless, sweeping over, up, tieing together, and then in to the throttle body.
