This was my dad car!! He was master technician at Saab before he sadly suddenly passed away!! He worked for Saab for 40 plus years and there was nothing about Saab he didn’t know!! Breaks my heart to see this car again but I see the passionate history here!! Saab played a massive part in my childhood growing up and so did cars!! Thank you for making this car internet famous!!

The 99 is soooo handsome!!! I love the 90 - which was 99 in front with the 900's notchback in back. Absolutely looooove the shape of the 99. The "sit up straight" seating position and the fishbowl windshield, hockey stick backside. Very Civilized. Very Gentlemanly and Distinguished. I miss SAAB so much!!!! Come back SAAB! We need you back!!

Back in the very early 1980s I had a Saab 900 Turbo 3 dr and that was such a wonderful car. I owned it when I met my wife and she still absolutely loves it if we see a 99 or 900. So sad that Saab are no longer with us as they truly offered a different experience. Great video.

My first Saab was a 1976 99 Combi Coupe! From then on I was hooked. I had, in total over time, 5 various models of the 99 and two 900 models. My favourite was the 99GLE - a 1982 model, I think. That was a gorgeous car!

Super historical review! I recall when these came out. My dad and I went to the dealer to see one and they had none in stock. A guy who had just bought one brought it down for us to see it. He offered a test drive, but my dad, a lawyer, wasn't willing to risk it. I have bought 2 Saabs in my life. I wish I still had my 1983 900 Turbo, but still very much enjoy my 2007 9-3 2.0t convertible, especially when the weather cooperates. 😉 Love Saabs!

Thanks so much! A white 99GL 5 speed 2dr just like this one (83 though) was my very first Saab. Had more than a dozen since then, which were mostly 99/900/90. So yeah, completely share your point of view. Driven them to the north (Sweden), southwest (Gibraltar), East (Russia in winter), South east (all the way to the Caucasus via Turkey). And sure, the West too 😅 hit the UK roads as well with various 99s.😊

It’s 1987, I’m 13, and my friend’s dad picks me up in a red 900 3 door 5 sp. I am blown away - In my mind Saabs are as exotic as Ferraris (They were rare in the USA and I had heard of Saab’s rally success). Years later in college we’re best friends and he had a black 900 Turbo 3 door 5 sp and me a 1983 Volvo 242 GLT Turbo 2 door 5 sp. The Volvo felt faster as it had a lot of turbo lag but when it kicked in it really threw you back. The Saab power delivery was much smoother. Overall the Saab felt much more refined but almost too reserved. The Volvo felt more spirited but I think that may be more about RWD and oversteer! I do recall the front end and steering on the 900 as feeling unnatural. I think it had to do with that long front end swinging way out in front of the wheels.

Very well presented as always Ed. I would put this as the thinking persons car, not the brash, flash shiny suit "my cat's blacker than your cat" person. This was (is) for that person who is not really in any need to show off. Someone who is happy to be in the spotlight but doesn't crave it. I wasn't a fan of the style in the early 70's but warmed to it a lot before the middle of that decade once I had a better appreciation of the engineering underneath that body. Many thanks for sharing.

I knew about the Triumph engine connection but as is usual, a quick Wiki search and half an hour later, I’ve gone from the B engine to the H engine to the BAIC end of the story for the slant 4. But it did make me wonder if anyone had ever taken the better Saab version and fitted it into a Triumph. Imagine a Dolomite with a much more modern Saab H engine, turbo charged. Now that would be something else.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 3 күн бұрын
The Dolomite had the 16 valve Sprint engine - the world's first mass produced 16 valve engine that delivered the HP. An engine SAAB should have considered.

I was a real fan of the Saab 99 when it was a current car and I was a teenage apprentice mechanic. the central key location, lost sill floor design, the cabin, that dashboard and the look of the car were all superb. the newer ones seemed to be owned by architects, accountants and higher graded teachers (possibly the grammar school crowd?)

My memory of these, in fact one and the same spec as this one is the reason I have loved Saab since my Dad brought his 99 home. Such a well engineered thing and so much more refined than the cavalier that replaced it. It’s also the reason I now have a NG9-3 convertible that’s meant to be a weekend car but it’s hard not to use daily.

Thank you for a superb video, one of your best. My initial motoring career was in Fiats. I am not artistic, but I could have been a Sculptor in polyester resin. Something had to change. In 1979 I bought a Saab 99 EMS, which I took to 200K miles. I moved on to 900s and have never been without one (or more) since and my highest milage one is over 300K. I am sure that many owners may get many more than that from them. I use a modified 900SE (normally aspirated) for my daily driver. In organising an annual historic car rally I drive 1,000 miles in a day in it, frankly nothing else will do! I have another car as well.....er...a TR7. Perhaps one day it will get a Saab engine.

I'm so glad you mentioned that the engine is in fact a derivatie of the triumh engine, as most reviewers overlook details as this when researching SAAB. The 99 is a glorious car and your take on it is one of the best on YT I thik. You should try a 2 door 900 og, as it is a bit like the engine a "better interpretation" of the same thing. It keeps the good things, but fixes smaller things like the pedals, steering column angle so it actually faces the driver, positioned everything facing the driver, etc It's the most driver oriented and individualistic saab of them all!! Greetings from Göteborg - Sweden

Good work on emphasizing the difference between the early british engines and Saab's total redesign of it in -72, something I've noticed other motoring channels, not least british ones, have failed to do. That said, I've owned quite a few 99:s over the years, one of which was a 1970 one, thus fitted with the Triumph 1,7, and apparently it hadn't yet had a chance to overheat and it went just fine as it was. In a way even smoother than the subsequent B engine actually.

This video brought back a lot of memories for me. From the mid 1970s to 80s, three 99s and two 900 turbos came and went across my parents' driveway. I learned to drive in one of them and got to drive one of the turbos once I had passed that magical age of 21 in the eyes of insurers back then. Your research about the engine issues was spot-on, the first 99 my mother owned had a 1854cc Triumph-developed engine and it had its issues, usually related to British-built components. I seem to remember my father saying something like 'bloody Girling', or 'bloody Lucas', everytime a problem was diagnosed. After they enlarged to two litres, all the problems disappeared and the second Saab on our driveway was a very reliable car. The introduction of the 900, with the redesign forward of the A-pillar, got rid of the 'wonky' steering wheel angle and also created space to fit PAS on right-hand drive cars. Along with a much improved interior ergonomics and quality, it convinced my father to P/X his Jaguar XJ12C for one of the first 900 turbos to be delivered to the UK. At the time, there was nothing on the road other than a 911 turbo that could match the Saab's midrange acceleration. The original 99/900 was so good that the first GM-influenced 900s were a step backwards in terms of just about everything and the beginning of the end for the brand.

I think I get what you are saying. If you just want to drive blasting the autobahn, the E21 is better. But if you want to use not only to show or to drive fast when you are late to work, if you also want to tour and watch the landscape, if you want to drive your family comfortably and safely and if you want to haul some cargo, this is surely better. Better visibility, more practically and more comfortable

My father owned a 96 and my brother had just finished totally restoring his own 96 when he unexpectedly died suddenly two years ago. I myself owned a very early 99 which duly had the engine problems you outline. This was followed by five 900s and a 9000. I can vouch for the safety and strength of the 900 having rolled and written one off avoiding an oncoming car which was carelessly overtaking a lorry on a country road. I emerged unscathed but just about every body panel was damaged and the insurance company wrote it off. I used these cars in farm veterinary practice and they were ideal for the job. When I was a student at Liverpool University in the early sixties me and a friend who later on in life owned a Lotus Elite, a V12 E type, a Daytona and a Dino( we went to successive Le Mans 24 hour races in the last two) used to road test cars loaned to us by local dealers and write our reports in the appropriately named vet student magazine “ Rumen”. One of these cars was a Rover 2000 which we took to the Lake District and thrashed it about somewhat whilst nimbly dodging sheep. The Rover was beyond my means when I came to buy my own car and was near the end of its production run but the 99 was a good substitute.

I have long loved SAAB and what the earliest versions stood for. However, could I be so bold to suggest perhaps a story about the tragedy that was the SAAB period when owned by GM. Compare and contrast that with the success of the Stellantis group's approach to shared resourcing. There's something in there that Harvard should review.

The biggest shame with the 99 is that essentially, the car you’re driving is the base model, the GL. Some of the spec levels with the 99 were amazing and immense. The more classier GLs, the fuel injected variants, the EMS (sporty) and GLE (luxury) not to mention the turbo. But none of these cars seemed to have survived. Leaving us only with base models that really don’t tell us how brilliant these cars were and how adaptable to different buyers they were. The interior of the GLE was just beautiful. Heavily patterned burgundy velour in a luxury motorway cruiser. The EMS was completely different. Sporty vinyl and polyester high back sports seats with an air dam on the front end with a football inspired alloy wheel. These cars had completely different personalities that the basic GL model just doesn’t express. And the turbos were just mental. 😂

Accelerating in a 99 turbo off the line was like dealing with someone’s bi polar disorder. Normal car acceleration through first, into second half way through second, suddenly you have ALL THE TORQUE IN THE WORLD, you’re front wheels are spinning, even in the dry, you’re engine is redlining and you’re sitting there thinking ‘what the hell just happened’? Over taking in one becomes a matter of pure timing. You change down from fourth to third 3 seconds before you need to, and floor it. The engine revs rise as you creep up on the car you’re overtaking, you pull out and as you do all of the worlds torque arrives in one big lump and you just zoom off towards the sunset like some kind of Ferrari. Takes some getting used to I can tell you, but once you do, wow! What a car.

So few of the moderately spec-ed 99s survived the 70s and 80s and that’s such a shame. They truly were a car for so many different people in ‘one product line up’. I drive a Mercedes these days, but what I wouldn’t give sometimes, to taken home by a 5door 99 or early 900 GLE. It would be heaven. They were warm, quiet, comfortable and so reassuring and I do get quite upset by the notion that they’ve all just disappeared leaving no trace of how good we had it for a while. It’s very, very sad.

They used to make claims about their heated seats that needed a gynaecologist to substantiate, so they got one !

@markbennett9787 Typical Saab yea...I also believe the interior designers, started with the seat before the dash etc, in order to nail ergonomics. Other manufacturers may well do the same, but Saab made you think about it. My 85 900 turbo 16 was a lovely cabin to be in🙂

I have only been in one of these once and my lasting impression was that there was little space inside considering the overall size of the vehicle.

I owned a 1989 model 900i five speed manual two door saloon for a couple of years in the early teenies. Unfortunately, it hadn't been well maintained in the past, and sadly I had to scrap it. When it was working properly, it was an excellent daily driver. It impressed me in just the same way you described with the 99. Of course, it had the 1998cc "H" engine. All of the problems it had were not engine or transmission related, but more electrical and fuel system related. I also had an automatic 1993 model 9000 five door hatchback at the time, which also had random electrical system problems. I loved them, but my late wife called them "money pits". The 9000 was very comfortable, spacious, and refined, but also fairly thirsty on fuel. I was very sad when SAAB ceased to exist.

The 99 was my second car way back (a 1982 model), and I loved it. Very reliable and in some ways fun to drive. The engine was a bit wooden, but the car had a lot of personality and charisma.

My first Saab was a 900 two saloon in the same colour scheme as this. Mine was a 2lt 16v none turbo. I've own many cars and vans over the years and this was definitely in my top 5, along with a 9000 Aero 2.3 turbo.

There was something about Saabs, they weren't trying to be something they weren't. Almost, the thinking person's car......I don't think the equivalent exists today. In the late 70s, my infant school headmistress had a Saab - and had it well into the 80s, as you'd see her driving around the local area.

When you say the turning circle is "immense", do you mean it's immensely tight or immensely large?

Always thought it was a great car. A girlfriend in the late 70s mother had one. The girlfriend described it as very heavy to steer, i never got the chance to drive it, nor her dads CXGT.

Coincidentally I had a 1985 900i 2-door in the mid 1990's in exactly the same colour and livery (including the boot spoiler) and the same wheels as this one, I came to regard it as better looking than the archetypal 3-door (with the 'prism' wheels). It was an 8-valve and the engine really was exceptional in terms of spread of power, even up slight gradients or into the wind on M-ways it felt like it could maintain 100MPH effortlessly. It was also one of the most stable cars I've ever driven, it's forte was long, fast sweeping bends where nothing (camber or surface changes, 'tramlines', raised road markings et al) would upset it, the cliched 'on rails' sensation (I was given a Vauxhall Astra for work at the time and it was a vague, stodgy mess in comparison), SAAB's choice of a beam axle, locking the rear track, had a lot to do with it. ETA >> it was also amazingly stable on M-ways in blustery cross-winds, that suspension again but also aerodynamics.

The pre GM SAABs were absolutely brilliant cars. Wonder style, engineering, and driver experience. Built like tanks, last year's due to its build quality and sticks to the road like super glue. The utter rubbish the UK was making at the time (ford, Vauxhall, BL), put us to shame when the sweds were making SAABs and Volvo of these standards. We were known for bad build quality and rust buckets and that's if the employees were ever at work at the time too!!
