As an Architect I have been using Lumion and Twinmotion for a few years now. The one BIG problem with Twinmotion is the Level of Detail (LOD) optimisation for large scenes / distances remains at render time! If the development team can sort this major flaw out, we have a plausible alternative to Lumion. Oh, and please please increase the vegetation options - 2020 has lost trees, not gained more!

What I like about Twinmotion. I have two systems that I use everyday. My desktop is a HPZ2 Mini that is perfect for CAD, but does not have a graphics card, therefor Lumion will not work on it. My other system is a game quality laptop with a very good graphics card and thus Lumion works on it. Twinmotion however works on both. On the HP the on screen renders are blocky, but when exported they are perfect. Also, I got Twinmotion for free, even 2020. Additionally, I am not a renderer by profession, Twinmotion is very very easy to use.

I think it depends on your profession. If you need photorealism, then Lumion and Twinmotion are not the right choice. All professional agencies work with Corona, Octane or Vray. Twinmotion is a very good choice for architects as it does not require a high degree of photorealism. Lumion is way too expensive to buy and upgrade. The upgrades are embarrassing. The best choice for me as a realtime renderer is D5. D5 is easy to use and does photo realism pretty well too. The speed of development is amazing. D5 Render will pretty much overtake everyone. Everything goes faster with the Chinese.

If the price stays that low, or even close to it, that's pretty damn incredible. I used the 2019 version a lot, but recently I've been teaching myself Blender, just because the TM 2019 quality wasn't there. 2020 doesn't get all the way to the 100% of Blender, but my God is the Blender learning curve high, and it is such a pain in the hole to deal with the FBX meshes that Revit exports.

Thanks Kid - great overview. I'm pushing TwinMotion for our students to take up (principally because it's free) as the quality is just amazing considering its simplicity of use. I was/am a fan of ART renderer in 3ds max because of its quality level/passes/time render setting simplicity but of course they have to get to grips with 3ds max too. Without expensive graphics cards Lumion wasn't feasible for us and certainly not for students on their meagre budgets. Great to be getting the quality and VR outputs that Unreal Engine offers without having to get your head round Unreal Engine ... which is not the friendliest of software ... it can drive you demented!

There's definitely some things I like about Twinmotion 2020, like the aging tree settings, and the ability to control character animations. But just based off what I've experienced so far, it's just not enough for me to completely make the jump from Lumion 10 to TM2020.

Once TM will make use of the Unreal Engine 5, this will be the real game changer. So far Lumion still gives better rendering output, that's why i'm still using it, but they wont be able to catch up with Unreal Engine 5. Might have to wait a couple of years for hat tho'...

I've been trying twinmotion for about 10 days, and I find these missings: 1. Cannot animate a specific car from the library. 2. There is no render elements like Render ID, Alpha, Reflection Channel. 3. There is no animated fallen leaves model (which is important to me for some shots) 4. No static moving for cars, people, every render will show different object locations which are not good especially for those who want to overlay videos in After effects. 6. Not able to use centimeters instead of meters for moving objects. 7. Not able to control the scale of water Caustic. 8. Autosave cannot be canceled. 9. Too much crashes, almost once every 2 hours (For the version 2020.1) 10. There is no possibility to select all images and render them all for 2k or 4k, you need to modify them one by one. 11. Not being able to use pc while rendering, the computer almost freezes. 12. Reflection box cause problem with the nigh scene. 13. No Option for softens shadows. 14. Cannot be able to record simple animation like rotating object 360 degrees. 15. Not able to change the position of the imported object axis. I think lumion still has better features.

I still think an end render in Lumion 10 has way better quality output than TW2020. TW2020 misses sharpness and is still bloomy. You can still notice that some imported buildings dont match the environment. The only thing that sticks out is the vegetation, whilst a city scene doesnt have that much quality. The TW2020 style settings actually kinda suck compared to the massive choices you can pick from in Lumion (cfr. real skies, realistic style, interiors, u cant even choose a sketchy look in TW). I cant even pick any real sky in TW and the material settings are so bad. The only thing I like about TW2020 is the actual "gameplay" of the UI and all the things you talked about in your video.

I tried Twinmotion 2020 in VR on my 2080Ti powered gaming computer & although the VR worked fine in Low & Medium graphics settings there was major issues in the High & Ultra settings when the real time ray tracing kicks in. The left eye rendered the entire scene, attempting ray traced reflections etc. but with some weird glitches. The right eye on the other hand rendered predominantly black with just some bright highlights where they were supposed to be. It's like Twinmotion or just the RTX standard in general can't render a real time ray traced scene twice simultaneously for both the left and right eye. Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me? Thanks in advance. For those interested & for comparison the Materials Room demo scene I tested in VR ran buttery smooth in both High & Ultra settings at full screen in 4k.

For super blurry backgrounds you want a DSLR camera with a lens like this on it : Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard Lens - the 1.4 is the aperture size - small number = big aperture = narrow depth of field = blurry. It'l be somethign like that as his camera is very close up to him when he's filming. Zoom lenses are good for the blurry but the camera has to be a long way away so it's usually not possible. He's awfully good at these videos isn't he? BTW the camera does not need to be a real expensive one - its the lenses that do the work, if you pay for good glass (lenses) a cheap camera body will do. When you upgrade, you keep the lenses and swap the body.

I'm still waiting for the first real-time render software that will realize they should add quality ray tracing as a final option. Using the real time engine is fine when your working and creating drafts for design meeting but at the final stage I wouldn't mind leaving the computer a couple of hours to render that top quality image or two to showoff on a website or broucher! TM 2020 final image is still ways behind Lumion not to mention Unreal ray tracing.. Having TM based on Unreal I was hoping to get at least quality light and shadow baking but really disappointed its not there.. I know there are plans to allow export to Unreal but that means your dealing with another 3rd software which I would actually consider but the feature isn't there yet anyway.

Twinmotion's UI is terrible to say the least, especially for a daily work flow. The result however is worth the headache imho! Still, I hope we're getting smaller buttons with less sub-menus and some sort of detail list view for imports and assets. I'm fine with the smaller view port, essentially because real time rendering is faster that way! Switching between quality settings however is annoying, hidden options in sub-sections is confusing and takes too long to navigate, how layers and phases are structured is also way too Win8 Metro like - _if you get my catch._ The results for real time rendering are the best in the industry, amazing to say the *very* least! However I tend to put all interiors directly into the 3D model, because of how terrible TM's UI and view port movements are.

Is it the end of the lumion? Yeah sure. Twinmotion can't save imported files right now and i'm not talking about crashes and many more. Just think about it, this is a rendering program and when you saved your work, you lost your imports. And yeah this is not a joke. What a disappointment.
