In the gorgeous segment from 5:48 (wauv, that is so Allesandro Cortini), it sounds like there is an LFO affecting some parameter of a voice being randomized with every keypress - can you tell me the secret of what causes those fluctuations note from note, or if it is an artifact from the machine?

it says the MEGAfm sends MIDI from all knobs and faders, but does it not receive it as well? Would be a bummer if not. I'm really trying to find some synths with midi CC functionality, most of my synths are vintage and only receive pitch bend/mod wheel at most.

Are the synths you show your own purchases? I've been looking at this synth lately too. I understand FM but yet I don't know what results to expect by doing different things in the same way I do with subtractive. Like I can't predict what the results of my actions will be sonically. I find that exciting and I like it a lot. Do you get a lot of happy accidents just tweaking the algorithm knob or others? I always find lo-fi digital synths really emotional in the high end.
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 4 жыл бұрын
That would be nice but most of the synths are loaners that I have to return to the company. FM synthesis can be done trial and error but in this case you'll end up quickly with noisy patches (but often in an unwanted digital sharp sense, not the cool YEAH-MERZBOW-Noise-sense). This is even more likely with MEGAfm which has the roughest sound I've heard from an FM synth until now. But once you get the basics of FM it's full of cool possibilities. If you don't mind spending a bit time in studies AND if you like lo-fi digital synths, this one might be the right choice for you.

@@bjh3661 Yes... but digital is always 0 and 1s. It can only mimic analog, or be coded to act like. Its not the same, literally and physically. Side by side, you can hear it, when in person and unhindered.

Its almost 1 year from my comment and my dudes, like @TheDudeGames said, software still aint really the same as pure hardware. Not saying you can't get close to it, but it still has its charms. Not to mention software too has its own benefits. And yes i am perfectly aware that youtube compression exists, and I am perfectly aware that my headphones are the (second) cheapest I could find and buy, so (again) I am perfectly aware that what the video sounds is not the same as what the video creator heard. To add, there are plenty of ways to make sounds, and whichever method you would use is up to you. Everyone got their preferences and to be honest (and maybe change my original statement a bit), anything can sound good in the right hands. Whether that is pure analog, digital hardware, computer software, whatever.

Your demos always sound fantastic. How do you rate this vs. the Korg Opsix (edit: I see you haven't played with that yet, are you planning to?)
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, and thanks for your comment. In fact, Opsix has arrived these days and I'm currently preparing a sound pack / demo for it (while I'm still waiting for my MEGAfm replacement unit - sigh). My first impression is that it's a great FM synth with a lot of cool features, especially for sound design. I hesitate a bit from doing a side by side comparison between those two though but I'll try. Yes, both offer FM synthesis but MEGAfm might be best described as evil and gritty brother of the more HiFi sounding OPSIX. Also, I find the MEGAfm to sound a bit more melancholic than the opsix what I absolutely like. So my very short conclusion would be to get both if you really like FM synthesis. If you're new to FM and like to check it out, so Elektron Digitone and Opsix would be my recommendations as both offer more familiar elements such as a subtractive filter which make it easer at the beginning to get good sounding results. A side note for those who check out the opsix in person: The factory presets on the first positions are quite heavy on Rhodes, Organs, bells and last-christmas-no-no-sounds. That's for sure fine for those who want classical FM patches but may fool some Techno / ambient / IDM heads out there. The opsix is way better than the first 70 patches may show. So maybe you'd like to start right away around patch 90 to get a good first idea.
@Renzsu
@Renzsu 3 жыл бұрын
@@limbicbits I'm not in the market unfortunately at the moment, but I did get Chipsynth MD (vst) a while ago for Megadrive FM stuff. That will have to do for now, but it does seem like the Opsix is a synth that manages to sense of the FM trickery, and it does sound really good (unfortunately I am a sucker for those EP sounds :) ). Looking forward to your video on it.

What I've realised about this synth is that the basic engine is similar to most other FM synths but it's those dirty 9 bit converters that give the synth tonnes of character. Any basic sound on this synth is more warm and interesting than almost any other FM synth. The problem is that you can't easily remove all that lo-fi dirt. You can warm up a typical FM synth by running it through a distortion pedal, but you can't undistort this synth. Basically I think this synth will be awesome for certain cruddy lo fi purposes but not so great for situations where you want a crisp, clear tone. Cleaner sounding FM synths however can do both, with the right post processing.
@limbicbits
@limbicbits Жыл бұрын
Very clean sounds are definitely not his strength. Although you can get rid of a part of the dirt when setting the volume dial not above 11 o'clock. I disagree though with putting it through a distortion pedal would have a similar result. The MEGAfm' s sound and behaviour is quite particular and almost impossible to replace. And I've also tried it with different other FM synths.
@juno6
@juno6 Жыл бұрын
Running a clean fm synth through distortion sounds anything but like these old fm chips. The digital artifacts are completely different to any external process. To begin with, it's a per note effect, and digital artifacts like quantisation noise, aliasing, etc have a very organic quality that has nothing to do with a fuzz pedal or something. Sadly I don't own this synth, but I have a collection of programmable pss, psr and dsr keyboards so I can assure you that.

The demo is really great. However, I tried loading patches with firmware 1.4 to 1.6 and it didn't work. You guys need to check the patch data itself again.
@limbicbits

There’s been a bug within an earlier version of the firmware which currently (1.6) makes it impossible to load our patches to the synth. I’m already in touch with twisted electrons and they’ll send me a unit to (hopefully) save or at least recreate the patches. Can’t promise it at this point but there will be some patches soon. Please stay tuned!

FM synths have a tendency to sound thin and harsh, one would rarely play it without something to thicken the sound.
@DarkSideofSynth
@DarkSideofSynth 4 жыл бұрын
@@franciscoarana3735 It much depends on the individual sound. Besides, as much as I adore reverb, if the title says "Sound Demo" and most of that sound is actually an effect, people complain, and rightly so. Just name it "jamming with synth X and effect Y". That's all.

It definitely is LoFi but that's part of the concept as this synth is built around the FM chip that's been used in the old Sega Megadrive Consoles. Would be cool though, to be able to change the chip, let's say with another 4-OP-FM Synth. The faders make this one a great performing instrument but if you're allergic to aliasing this is NOT the right synth for you.

nice demo bro but IMMO, to show how an instrument sounds, I'd say ''a bit less playing and a bit more tweaking' to actually expose the character of the synth, I mean filter behaviour, operators switching, etc... Anyway nice. So thanx ;)
@limbicbits
@limbicbits 4 жыл бұрын
Filter behaviour will be difficult as there aren't any. Other than that you can watch different patches in the video showing a broad palette of possibilities. Real time tweaking with this one doesn't make too much sense. The parameter scaling is quite rough so if you'd do that life you'll end up rapidly with chaos (but not the fun one). For sound design it's cool, for live tweaking other than what I've shown in several situations in the video not so much, imo.

I like the fact that you really play some nice stuff here. Sometimes the guys only press buttons and turn knobs and there are no emotions at all. Also you took time to make some great sound design. I remember seeing that video of Marc Doty reviewing the Polyend & Dreadbox Medusa, the worst way to do it, pressing random keys and stuff and making it sound like shit. Thank for that video, i think you are making me get one anytime soon
