Glad to see someone was able to save this. Axel was going to be a main character but Sony felt this ending was problematic and a bit mean spirited, so we cut the ending and quickly make him a secret character. Minion was also cut as the end boss due to his demonic background so we pieced together Piecemeal at the last second.

@@Harvestjunkie Darkside should have, but no all 3 didn't have endings. Minion was supposed to be the final boss, but got scraped at the last second so we made Piecemeal and Mime at the last second, meaning not enough time to make cinematics for them.

You can still play as Axel in the game, he just has no Story Mode since the ending was cut. He does appear in the game's intro oddly enough, where Billy Calypso kicks his wheelchair stroller down a street slope as he loses control trying not to fall over.

For sure. It's geared toward the younger crowd and there was a recent push to show bullying was not OK (two years after Columbine). Of course, in a game like Twisted Metal, Calypso in any form is gonna pull jerk moves. The rest of the "wishes" were ok, but punching down on a disabled kid was probably too much to the dev leadership or Sony standards.

I understand this could be offensive for people that aren't able to walk, but I think you could take the opposite perspective and say that they were trying to include disabled children in the game. Calypso will try and mostly succeed to mess with the wishes of all players, regardless if they are disabled or not. I think it was a great ending (Poor Axel lol).

Ivan Winchester Not everything is racist when it's concerning with black people. Calypso equally manipulated everyone in the tournament. What's the difference if Axel were to be white? Colour has nothing to do with what was shown. Here, it shows axel has the inability to walk and was promised he could walk, but calypso's twist was being controlling and to take the advantage of his disability by putting him inside a suit enabling to walk which is then controlled by remote. The reason why it never made it to the final cut is that I assume it disrespects those who have these exact disabilities and may offend those that don't have that freedom

This video was extracted from the now defunct Argonaut Films website. In that website, a "Samples" section contained all endings of Small Brawl, including this video (which really puzzled fans). Worth noting is that this video you are seeing is the one and only available online backup of those sample videos, which were rendered in a migh higher quality (and double the FPS) than the one streamed in the PSX game.

There was HEAVY controversy over an episode of the animated show BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD where Beavis exclaims FIRE over and over, and they accidentally burn down a building. Supposedly, a kid burned down his home and accidentally took down his sister in the blaze. Anything aimed at kids promoting fire in a destructive way was DOA. I'm aware of napalm, but devs or Sony split hairs and saw that as being more innocuous than more aggressive angle of an arm-based flamethrower. (Sounds hypocritical, I know.) Anti-bullying campaigns popped up in the aftermath of Columbine in 1999, so showing a disabled kid getting dunked on was iffy. Devs and Sony didn't want to catch smoke for this game, but that's what TM Black was fore.

During the game's initial development axel was a default character which is why you can see him in the opening sequence. Axel's ending was seen as being potentially offensive to paraplegics so Axel became an unlockable vehicle so you couldn't see his ending. Axel's ending is still in all version of the game but dummied out. You can still find it on the game's disk via GameShark and other similar devices.

Nothing offensive or insensitive happened to him, he and Vinnie (who's white) just got deafened by Billy Calypso. By that token, Hammerhead's ending from TM2 is also racist because one of Hammerhead's drivers is black (idk if it's Mike or Stu) and leaps off a building with his friend.
