His best ever performance of this song is the 2001 Rock Am Ring one. Ville is so fucked up in it, high or drunk, maybe both, and he sings it perfectly but his movements and overall presence is like him in an out of body experience floating on clouds... as a former opiate addict, I can appreciate how good he was feeling there and it could have been 10k ppl watching or 0 and he'd perform the same
@entelechy20202 жыл бұрын
1000%. That performance is a religious experience. He really channeled something in whatever stupor he was in. I swear he was otherworldly, really reminded me of what Lestat from Anne Rice's books would perform with his band.

6 years clean, I know exactly the clip you are talking about. I don’t think he was on opiates (my poison), but he did have a severe drinking problem (he quit smoking and drinking a few years ago). He may have been prescribed some benzos or other shit. But yeah, he definitely had his shows where you could see he wa fucked up. I remember seeing HIM in Sayreville NJ, Starland Ballroom, got there 4 hours early, was there in the front, I have a heartsgram on my left wrist, and Ville actually touched my hand that night (I sound like a school girl lol), But my pt being, at the time he hasn’t quit drinking yet or smoking, I remember him constantly sneaking out to smoke quickly (you can’t smoke indoors even at a bar in NJ), Linde and the rest would have awesome transitional music while Ville was smoking though. I remember actually pissing my pants bc I didn’t want to lose my spot xD This was years ago, smart phones were somewhat new, and driving there I didn’t know you could make maps do audio, so I kept missing turns, threw out the weed in my car at one point, finally found the place, and it was the best show I’ve ever been to

You should do It's All Tears from them to get some crazy range changes from Ville. And oh my the throwback to my teenage years. Ville Valo is apparently in the top 10 singers with the largest vocal ranges in the world. I still consider him one of my favourite vocalists of all time (that baritone, though).
@louiscotrone3 жыл бұрын
Gotta hear this man's high notes. You really underestimating his range. Check live some from "digital versatile doom: live at Orpheum theater" like "sleepwalking past hope" or "funeral of hearts" some of their faster rock songs like "buried alive by love" or "soul on fire" from that live album
@factbeaglesarebest Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Also remember most shows he was drunk, possibly doing other shit, yet flawlessly sang. He has a freakin 4 octave range! I’m psyched I get to finally see Ville perform again next month in PA. Their last tour near me, Philly, I had tickets, but couldn’t get a ride there and missed it :( But I’ve seen HIM about 6-7 times. My favorite experience was at Starland ballroom in Sayreville NJ. Almost turned around (I was driving where I didn’t know the area, smartphones were new, and I didn’t know how to make it voice directions, so I missed exits, wound up ditching my weed (was on probation at the time), but finally made it. Was early enough to get there and be right up against the stage, Ville touched the heartagram on my wrist, I pissed myself (on purpose bc I wasn’t giving up my spot lol)… Overall the best concert ever.

"He's doing this in such a healthy way" ....okay, from a technical standpoint yes, however he was a chainsmoker known to smoke three to five cartons a day, which is how he claims he developed his baritone. In some early performances from the 90's (Enjoy The Silence and For You are good examples), he'd smoke while singing to to the degree of inhaling before a chorus and exhaling smoke as he sung.
@Deeznutseighthundredthirty2 жыл бұрын
Ville did smoke a shit ton, there's no doubting that, but I can assure you even a crazy rockstar isn't smoking even a carton a day. There's 12 packs in a single carton. There's no way anyone is smoking 36-60 packs a day, it's impossible. Like 3 packs, sure, but 12 or more? No way.

hahaha I am right there with you!!! HIM is my favorite band and I cringe when people call them emo! Gothic rock for life! \m/ HIM are influenced by the best bands in history! Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, The Sisters Of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Depeche mode, Iron Maiden, Dio, and all of the greats from everything to Neil Young, and Johnny Cash! All of the Doom metal influence as well from bands such as Cathedral, Paradise Lost, and Anathema!!! This is why they are my favorite band of all time because each of the band members have the best taste in all of music, so in return you get the BEST sounding band ever! haha I totally put alot of effort into this comment. I hope people recognize!!!!!!! \m/ I think they just kinda got mistakenly placed into the emo genre because when Bam was repping HIM they got noticed more in the US and it was around the time the big emo scene was taking off with bands like my chemical romance and all of those! ( no hate on those bands at all) People have just always had a hard time placing HIM in a specific category. They are just straight up their own genre which is Love Metal and have been rocking the fuck out since 1995 haha! I would be so happy if they got back together. Finland has some of the best metal bands EVER! If anyone reads this comment and you haven't heard of The 69 Eyes or Children Of Bodom, check those bands out for SURE! I'm just giving compliments and shout outs to the Finnish bands that deserve to be heard! I promise you won't be disappointed! Cheers and much love!

Pop? Emo? Marilyn Manson? I feel this analysis is very shortsighted and incorrect. HIM is much bigger than all of those things and has nothing in common with them. Started in 1991 nothing to do with emo🙄 If you have no insight of a particular music history/genre better to comment solely on the singing. I love Marilyn Manson but comparing him to Ville who has 4 octaves is an insult. I'd compare Marilyn to Janet Jackson. He has a very limited range but is infinitely creative with it. MM stays in the pocket. If he was able to have half as much range as Ville he'd be a lot more popular than he already is.

I was completely in love with HIM, I still have all there albums including the USA released HER. Unfortunately they lost me as a fan when i saw them live in concert. I spent over $1000 to see them perform and they were late to stage, didnt interact with the audience, and frankly were pretty rude and disrespectful to the fans that were there. It really opened my eyes to some serious selfish behavior from a group i really adored. It's amazing how seeing your idol in person and how they act can really change your entire view on them. It really had nothing to do with the money, since I willing spent tons of money on concerts, but the experience of seeing HIM live, front row next to the stage was one of the worst concerts I had ever attended.

When was this? That is very unusual for HIM. They loved their audiences and were always very respectful of them. Ville had alcohol issues for several yrs, plus horrible stage fright (that's often why he would turn his back, and look like he was singing to Gas!) so that may have had something to do with it. I know it was a lot of money and disappointing, but remember even rock stars are human and have bad days.
@shiro1823 жыл бұрын
I encountered the same behaviors on their farewell tour when I attended it in Warsaw, Poland and the United Sates. Back to the crowd, didn't even look within the audience, zero interaction/presence from the stage like he didn't wish to be there. Wonderful singing though. Disappointing but I'm still a fan.
