Bad thing to say you ask ???: Some Vocal coaches, singers of all kinds that react to Floor say that the vibrating of the jaw is a no no when doing vibrato. But hey I don't care 😎 I love seeing that Jaw party hard.
@BigBrainSinger
@BigBrainSinger 3 жыл бұрын
@@corneliusantonius3108 it's not necessarily a no-no... it just makes the vibrato artificial which is only an issue when you care about the sound projecting. When you're using a condenser mic 8 inches away, the sound doesn't need to travel. Some dogmatic vocal coaches are too up tight about TRADITIONAL technique, but when it works it works ... I'm an opera singer and classical voice teacher but even I know it's okay for things like that to happen when the result isn't negative. She's not singing in a huge opera house without a mic in this (though she definitely could)

If you want to see videos of her face in close up as she sings, check the performances from Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers". She was on it in 2019. Basic premise is get a group of singers from different genres together. Each week one is centre of attention and the others perform songs for them. Maybe one of their own, or a favourite, or just something they think they'll love. No winners, no competition, just singers singing for each other for the joy of it. Hardly anyone in the Netherlands had heard of Floor before the show. Now she's famous there :)

No more Disney princesses needed, the Queen has arrived. About the instrumental part: It seems that Oscar Fläring of Swedish rock band The Fouxes supplies the instrumentation on Floor’s cover. PLUS …… she opened the door for people who never heard of Nightwish! Btw: the mic she's using is an AKG C12VR, about 6 grand.

This is my first ever puplic comment, I am a somewhat classically trained choir-singer! I have a basis in classical way of singing, but I have also sanged in a contemporary cover band as a lead singer for many years. I have singing carrier of twenty years and I have to admit that these great points you are making here, make me think of my own singing! Thank you for these pointers. Eventhough I am a Finnish dude, and knew NW from it's beginnings, I'we only started to listen to it more, after this covid shit started to happen and my appreciation is beginning to rise towards it. But only after professionals like youself began to react to it! Thank you and I subscribed!"

Love your reactions and information you pass on. You mentioned Floor's facial expressions: if you watch in many of the live performances, she's doing the same thing, even though almost no one in the audience can see them. She is a storyteller above all, her masterful technique serves toward that end. As others have said, watch her solo performance of "Shallow" from Beste Zangers, you will see a different Floor.

As a high sensitivity personality Floor has the ability to really "feel" the music she is performing and bring her emotions into the performance. Being a graduate of the Dutch Rock Academy followed by a conservatory education specifically aimed at classical singing, she is amongst the best trained singers around, and able to bring all those techniques to the fore. Besides being one of the best singers around she is also a vocal coach.

One thing I admire in this particular performance is she has her mouth a little more closed than normal, but as a mechanism to brighten the tone and take out some of her more earthy resonance, in an effort to match the character of a Disney track.

I am very impressed with your technical review of Floor Jansen. I had not heard her sing before because I have been following Dimash Kudaibergen closely for the last 4 years. She was great. And I need to listen to more from her. What most intrigued me about your analysis was the similarity between Floor and Dimash Kudaibergen. I have been addicted to watching Dimash's multiple uses of his "Instrument", his tongue, facial expressions, how he draws the hollow, in his throat, in tight, just below his Adam's Apple and just above the center "v" shaped part of his collar bone, the way he uses his throat muscles, even his eyebrows and forehead sing. You mentioned Floor's crease in her tongue. Dimash does this a lot as he sings and I've been so curious about that. How he can roll the sides of his tongue up which leaves a very deep crease in the middle of his tongue. He has a very wide wide mouth and unhinged jaw that I find most impressive. There is a part in the song "Sinful Passion" (he sang this at a Concert in Sochi, Russia), where he wiggles his tongue rapidly. It's a little hard to catch him doing this because it's there and then it's gone. I would love to hear your thoughts and analysis of Dimash's voice. He sings in 12 languages and has a vocal range of 6 octaves including an extraordinary note of D8, which his fans call a Dolphin Whistle. He has been professionally trained since the age of 5 in his native country of Kazakhstan. He was born on May 24, 1994. He is 6' 3" tall. Watching him use and continually improve his amazing Gift over the years has been amazing. Earlier in his career, he was offered a position in the Astana Opera House in Kazakhstan. He declined the offer because he wanted to explore his vocals in a great many genres. Crossover Pop, Neoclassical, infusing Folk and Traditional music into his music. He is a composer and multi instrumentalist (7 instruments). All his Concerts have been sold out. But for me, watching how incredibly he uses every part of his body to show his emotions. He is a Master Storyteller. He is University trained and has his Masters in Musical Composition and other degrees. He is currently going for his Doctorate in Music. I would greatly appreciate your evaluation of Dimash's incredible voice. Dimash and World Famous Russian/Ukrainian, composer/pianist, Igor Krutoy (who came out of retirement specifically to work with Dimash) were invited to perform a song for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2nd European Olympic Games in Minsk, Belarus in June of 2019. The Maestro composed the song "Ogni Pietra Olympico", sung in Italian, for this event. Since then, they have performed it at many other events and concerts and venues. I prefer the version he sang at his solo, and sold out, Arnau Concert in Kazakhstan in 2019. Also the song "Sinful Passion" sung in Russian, "SOS" sung in French at the Slavic Bazaar (he won the Grand Prix there). And "Adagio" from the competition "The Singer 2017". This was round #6, which he won, out of 14 rounds of songs in that competition. I think I've talked too much. Sorry. But I look forward to your review of this amazing young man. A great many voice coaches and extremely talented teachers and celebrities have been saying that Dimash is the most talented, athletic vocally skilled singer in the world. Many people have said that he has at least 30 people singing in his body. He is an Independent. Not tied into any producer's contract. He is just recently starting to appear in the USA. Dimash has been among the Top 5 on Kevan Kenny's MTV #FRIDAYSLIVESTREAM on USA television. He has been holding steady at #2 position for many weeks. He has plans to come to the USA very soon to continue his work and training.

Dude, you are really, really good. I saw a first video from you, it was a kind of Nightwish/Floor Jansen compilation, and you where talking through the best parts the whole time, which gave me the feeling 'shut up man, you are constantly talking through the best vocal parts - how can you do that'. Now i have seen more of your work, i know that that specific video was not a standard for your work. You really know what you are talking about, you are extremely vocal/technical knowledgable and you have very much respect for the artist. My apologies for my first annoyed reaction. I watch a lot of vocal (reaction) coaches, among them some very good ones, but i must honestly say, that i have not encountered this high quality you put in your analytical work. And, the best thing, you are having a lot of fun, for which, on my turn, i have fun watching you. You are quite a character, and i like that. Keep up the good work, and all the best with your channel. P.S. keep doing more Floor, she is one of the best and most versatile female vocalists alive on the planet today. (if not The best)

And, even with that level of mastering all techniques - Floor said in a talk with Tarja (former and 1st singer of NW) that she was "concerned" how her voice will react when she, hopefully soon, can start touring again - she has not been singing live for 1,5 - 2 hours a day, like she normally does on tour for a long time now. Although, she sings and trains every day to maintain the quality. Btw, the recording is made in her hope studio, by Hannes, her husband - so no professional equipment (apart from the mic) - no sound ingenieur, etc. Pretty good result I would say

From a layman's perspective, Floor's jaw is like a "bobble head". Everything is happening above the jaw (jeez, where have I heard that? haha) and the jaw just expands and contracts to facilitate what kind of sound she wants. I'm being "Captain simplistic" I know, but it really is interesting how this whole "singing thing" is done. Huh? Who knew? haha.
@bkeyser
@bkeyser 3 жыл бұрын
Dude, I really enjoy these reactions. Been watching all the NW/Floor YTs and props to your knowledge and ability to recognize so much of the technicality and emotion she brings. You asked at the end about her jaw. I've seen vocal coach reactors who have commented - worrisomely (if that's a word) - that the flexibility in her jaw appears to be a mechanism for vibrato. That they would caution their students about doing that, purposefully. (I can't sing a note, btw, so I'm only parroting what I learn from you all on these reactions.) But you haven't done that. I assume because you recognize that a woman with this much talent certainly doesn't need to mechanize her vibrato. She seems - to me - to have complete control over that aspect, as well as every other aspect, of her voice. Her jaw though, doesn't "look" to be "hinged" like would commonly - maybe - be thought. Hers seems to move up and down like an elevator at the "hinge" point. If that makes sense. Her jaw "going along for the ride" as you put it, seems loose and moves vertically rather than in rotation. She noted in her 1st master class video about keeping the position of her jaw a finger width behind her upper teeth, and it seems like that vertical movement is what allows that. Now I don't suspect she's built different than the rest of us; rather, she seems to be so loose and flexible with the mechanics of her jaw movement that she can keep that relative position through any sound she's emoting. I've seen other singers belt and their neck tightens, which looks to me like they're rotating as if on a hinge, bringing their chin down to their neck and creating that tightness. She never seems to do that. I could be completely off base with this, but your jaw comments made me think about it, and that's the best I can describe it. I hope you keep going with the NW/Floor reactions. I'm in awe of her and them as a group, and learn a lot from your commentary. There's so many great songs to do, but I won't take up anymore of your time after this ungodly long rant with suggestions. Maybe another time. Suffice to say for now, I'm onboard. And thanks.

I actually mentioned this on tonight's stream (expect it in the next week or so on YT). The jaw movement with vibrato is not BAD for the voice. It is one way that allows for a certain effect. It is only bad if you are trying to sing with a classical technique, which requires you to project without a microphone. Your voice doesn't resonate as efficiently when the jaw is being used. Sound will only travel without amplification if it is being made naturally with equal phonation. Floor has a mic. Therefore the sound doesn't need to travel very far. Therefore it doesn't matter if her jaw shakes with vibrato. It's a good sound and works for her. I'd like to see those teachers sing with the type of versatility she brings to everything...

@@BigBrainSinger Ah. Interesting. Makes sense though. Presumably the fluttering jaw could put an affect on the sound production. I'm assuming you mean for a stage production, when you say classical? As in musical theater? I've heard people say Floor's jaw movement is a result of being so free/loose. I guess that's another way of saying "along for the ride."

Something bad to say? Good luck :) I love hearing people talk about Floor, especially other singers, vocal coaches etc. because, and I think I've said this before, I learn something new about subjects I know precious little about (though obviously more now that I've heard a lot of reactions :) ), and I also love how it reinforces what I already felt. What's even more amazing is how humble she is, she's got all this talent and skill and never once does it seem like she thinks much of it or tries to show off, instead she's humble and from what I've heard and seen she's a wonderful person too. And she's a valkyrie :)

So. Everyone is giving you more Floor recs (which I totally agree with), but if you are wanting other styles as well: Some of the best disney covers I've heard lately have been Acapella. Voiceplay is sensational if you haven't heard them. I especially recommend their "Little Mermaid Medley" and "Oogie Boogie Man." Their Bass also has a fabulous cover of Bare Necessities that is worth a listen. Since it's heading into Christmas, I'll also recommend Home Free performing "O Holy Night" or "Do You Hear What I Hear" and The Hound + Fox performing "We Three Kings." Also, Pentatonix has several albums to choose from. "Mary Did You Know" and "Little Drummer Boy" by them will always rank in my top spots of theirs. I believe Within Temptation one year did a "Gothic Christmas" as well, though I lost it when I lost all my music because my computer died suddenly. My sister was a voice major once upon a forever ago, and I forgot how much I loved listening to her nerd out about music. It is super nice to see someone actually responding to the how and why this works -- and using it to explain to those who want to get better! Also, it's obvious you just plain love good music, and that helps too. Looking forward to more! Thank you for putting these on KZbin for those of us who can't usually catch live streams!

There we go again... You'll get us spoiled with all those reactions, haha. I thought you might enjoy this - a fan mixed Floor's version with the original portion from "Frozen" where Elsa sings it. Interesting thing is she (the fan) said she didn't even have to mess with the pitch or any timing, Floor's version follows the original to the letter. All she did was add a second layer of Floor's singing to the mix to make it a little louder (as some people believe her voice was a tad too low on the cover's mix): kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4mqnpyoba-Mirc

About the jaw, at some points her jaw drops down from the hinge. Her entire jaw drops as if she can disconnect the hinge point and drop it straight down as opposed to moving her jaw through an arc like we all do. You want to know something even more awesome? Some KZbinrs have overlaid her vocal track on the Frozen animation and it is an exact fit. Check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4mqnpyoba-Mirc

Well, Bill, formal voice training actually calls for a good understanding of opening the jaw from the hinge. Young singers who are inexperienced open it in an Arc. At least, that's my experience with this kind of jaw movement.

Also, she did a CD with the guitarist from Pagan's Mind (Jorn Viggo Lofstad) that shows yet another side: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHLMgZiJqNZ3Y5Y I saw the Baltimore show of the Decades tour from the front row...never more than about 10' from her. Really enjoy your channel and explanation of what/how she is doing things. Not a singer (not even in car with radio blasting ) but even I picked up her tongue position on that one part and I tried to just do that and couldn’t just sitting there let alone when singing. Good thing is you have a ton of stuff to look into for her including After Forever/ReVamp/Nightwish/Beste Zangers and even some solo opera arias. 🤘

USEFUL LINKS HERE: Here's my favourite list of "WTF-is-this-Nightwish?"-songs available on KZbin. What I mean by that is they represent the most varied experience of Nightwish you can get.
