Chris Matthews Fly Fishing

Күн бұрын

Only four and a half weeks of the season left, so even though the conditions weren't great, I had the afternoon off, and it would have been rude not to?
I decided that the nymph would give the best chance of actually catching something, and as I've mentioned before, giving the nymph a little twitch can often bring a response from the Trout.

Nice video Chris. Fortunate that you came across a heron with alopecia! Tough year all round for we fisher folk. Lets hope we can have a decent run in to the end of the season. Most enjoyable

Cheers Peter, yes pretty tough this season. It will be interesting to see the catch return numbers for the club. We have one member who fishes a lot and normally wins the "most fish" trophy. It's generally a good gauge for the season if his numbers are down.

Very nice Chris, the suspense on the last fish taking was fantastic. The progressive zoom worked a treat!! Really captured the essence of dry fly fishing well done 👏

Great video Chris don't know how I missed it earlier! You did well and the 12 inchers was a cracker. Only a few weeks left now and hopefully you will get some rain to flush out that choking slime. That stuff is death to invertebrate development.

Hi Fred, Yes, not long to go now😕we had a tiny bit of rain but not the real flood we needed. It's a wonder anything survives at all in our local rivers given the state of the river bed. I fished on the East Dart yesterday high up on the Moor, and it was really noticeable just how clean the gravel was. Didn't help the fishing much, unfortunately, but it did highlight the difference once you get away from intensive farmland and sewage works. Have you used the action 4 in anger yet? I'm thinking I might upgrade to one next year for the bigger sensor?

A bit of diversity! The art of the upstream nymph! I find the dry fly "anti drag" rules tend not to matter with the lightweight nymph. Good results anyway! Rivers close to me haven't had a proper flood since June, just small rises that haven't shifted the scum. Further north the Cumbrian rivers have had flood after flood! Twitched sedge , fished dry, got me the odd fish last week. 👍👍

It might be a case of "be careful what you wish for" Davd if we get the weather they're forecasting. 100mm of rain over the next 48 hours !! A bit of movement in the fly can often make all the difference just to give that impression of life and stimulate a feeding response. Other times, of course they want the perfect drag free drift? It's what makes it all so interesting and unpredictable.

Thanks so much Chris. Will have to try twitching a nymph. Obviously effective. I particularly enjoyed watching the last section where you just let us watch you casting in that pool with a dry fly. Cast after cast - really meant we could get a sense of the thing and then to hook that little guy finally, very nice.

When I nymph I try to make it go just subsurface, even gink them a bit at times. Then I like nymphs with a bit of soft hackle, it makes the perfect thorax in the stream...And as close to dry fly fishing as it gets😊Thanks for another film, lets pray for an agreeable September.

Sounds a lot like fishing North country spider patterns Tom? It's not something I've tried much but yet another aspect of our sport to explore. There's no doubt that the subsurface presentation can score where a high riding dry fly has been ignored. Often ill fish a beaded nymph on the point and a spider on the dropper and sometimes if I'm using twin dry fly one of the patterns can end up fishing awash and prove more palatable to the trout. So much to learn and yet so little time.

Hiya Chris, well done sometimes twitching a nymph can be the answer 👍 I’ve had quite the season for my first year getting heavily into fishing, 54inch king barracuda in Mexico 🇲🇽 and just landed my first salmon, at 11lb’s a couple of days ago. I’ve been having a great season on my small stream as well, only small ones but good fun on the dry 👍 I’ve had some to a couple of pounds as well but hoping for that monster next year that just happens to spit the hook every time at the net 😂. I’m looking to get into euronymphing this winter as well as my local main river has some decent graying up to 3-4lb if your lucky, hope to see a couple more vids this season 😁👍

Sounds like a great season👍 and to catch some wbt to 2lb is good going. Were these from the stream or the lake? Euronymphing has rather defeated me. I'm not sure it suits our overgrown rivers, I keep putting the damn flies in the trees! But when it works, it is very effective 👍

@@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 They were from the stream, I tend to get bigger ones come up my little tributary that I fish later on in the season, I think they come up to find a mate, or perhaps they are finding a place to shelter in the winter, anyways, they bigger fish that come up tend to eat anything that looks like a bug, but some days they will be totally switched off. Which makes for some interesting fishing! Yes I was planning on getting an Orvis Clearwater 10ft 3wt for the bigger rivers, not my small stream as that would not be fun in overgrown spaces. Apparently it’s not to bad at casting a dry fly as well

Not too bad here, I see more Mink than Otters, the occasional cormorant and goosanders can be a worry. The biggest threat to our rivers is pollution from farming and the local water company. Not an easy fix.
