Surprising results on a cold evening

I wanted to try out a new gopro mount to see if it was an improvement on my usual chest mount. The evening was cold and clear with a downstream wind, so not ideal conditions. I barely saw a fly hatch or a fish rise and yet a number of fish were willing to take my Neff caddis dry fly. Let me know in the comments if you noticed any difference in the pov.

ha ha ! I nearly missed the last casts! well done, great result. that biggest one was almost as good as a Lancashire trout 🤣🤣 I'm intrigued by this new camera mount! I've swapped between the head and chest mounts, the head gives a better view of hook ups, rod bending etc but can be more jerky and the camera seems more vulnerable to damage. the chest mount is generally better but I find myself obstructing the view of the take and hook up with my left arm!! it's difficult to remember to keep arms, sleeves etc out of the shot especially if its a big fish. warmer evenings on the way....👍👍👍

Hi Dave, yep I've also been through a range of mounts with the same issues as yourself. This is a Telesin neck mount, a sort of silicon moulded necklace thing. Early days but seems good for shorter sessions, not sure I'd want to wear one all day. They do two different sizes and I've purchased both (second hand) and will see which I prefer. I found the latch mechanism to be a bit fiddly but there are other ones available with different designs.

Lovely video again. I think the new mount seems good. Maybe the trout think it is autumn already and their last chance to feed up.

It seems to be the way of it this year, "forever autumn " was never more apt.

I just spent most of the last 24 hrs watching and listening to the Le mans 24 hrs!... Chill time ... pun intended 🥶.. I wish globLOL warming was happening! Was watching fish rise at Douglas Castle today, but the sign said... No fishing by order! Was walking the hound anyway. Nice trip on the river Chris 👌 👍

It does look like this week might actually be a bit summer like 👍 crap for fishing of course but we're never happy are we. (Might be good for an evening on the Taw though).

Better results with the new mount, Chris. Your hands are still visible, but they're at the bottom of the frame for much of the time, apart from when you're playing fish. I think if you took them out of shot completely, it would detract from the live/as it happens feel. Everything else - fish, etc - was fine. You did well in the conditions. I spent 3 fruitless hours on the Wilts Avon yesterday evening. It was chilly, with occasional showers. Hardly classic mid June weather. A kingfisher paid me a visit, too.

Thanks for the feed back Laurie, the new mount is certainly easier to take on and off and not so restrictive when casting. I'm not sure it's quite as stable as the chest mount but nothings perfect ( except perhaps your own film crew😃). You can't beat a visit from the Kingfisher.

Thank you Marcus, we've just had our first spell of "too warm for trout fishing" weather but thankfully temperatures have returned to normal today.

A good haul of broonies there Chris, a decent lump amongst them. For what it's worth, i reckon your new mount worked a treat, great angles with nothing being obscured. One thing with most fishing videos, i find it hard to know how far people are casting. How far were you mostly casting?
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 3 ай бұрын
Hi Davie, not far at all, I'd reckon about two to three rod lengths so 15 to 20 ish feet? I think it's more about the approach and presentation than distance casting. More line is difficult to control, strike and mend.

Cracking video, Chris. I’ve now learned to watch your videos right to the very end as you have this great habit of saying, Goodbye , then it’s a few more casts! 😂 Interested in your comments about the camera-I have mine on my hat but never convinced it’s the best place. Thought where you had yours was just about spot on. 👍

Hi Robert , yes I do tend to suffer from a bit of last cast syndrome 😀 The new mount is a Telesin neck mount if your interested. I have tried it on my head but I have to check my backfast and you end up with a lot of flicking back and forwards. If I bought one again I think I would look fir one with a different catch as it's a bit fiddly.

Nice video, what kind of furred leader and how much tippet do you use Please
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 3 ай бұрын
It's a 5' thread furled leader that I make myself, but there are plenty available online ( quick shout out for the Luke Bannister ones, very good quality). In terms of tippet it varies between 4 to 7 feet depending on venue and conditions. If I'm fishing somewhere really overgrown or if it's a windy day I go shorter. If the fish are being picky and I need to drop to 7x and tiny flies I'll go longer. As I always say the secret is that you must must must treat them with floatant every time BEFORE you start fishing. They actually get better with age👍 (like all us fishermen).

Well done Chris, it’s been really cold up here as well but it doesn’t seem to be bothering the fish. Do you use tippet rings on the end of your furled leader?
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 3 ай бұрын
Hi Mike, I have used tippet rings in the past but once I worked out a system to create a shorb loop in the thin end of the leader I've stuck with that. The rings work well though and make it easier to tie on a new tippet. I just kept loosing the damn things during leader production as they're so fiddly ! They do create a tiny splash despite what the manufacturers say but I don't think it's enough to worry about. Nothing like a 3mm tungsten bead 👍
